Andrew Ivins, a 247Sports Southeast recruiting analyst, said getting an early commitment from the 6-foot-5, 220-pound Davis — who initially made a name for himself as a basketball prospect, earning offers from more than a half-dozen schools by last year — is “another impressive win for Josh Heupel and the Volunteers in SEC country.”

“He’s one of my favorite tight ends in the Class of 2023,” Ivins said of Davis, who’s ranked the No. 112 overall prospect and No. 7 tight end in the 2023 class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. “Reminds me a lot of Brevin Jordan, who played at Miami and is now with the (NFL’s Houston) Texans.

“Just a fluid mover with ball skills that can line up in the slot or put his hand in the dirt. You know, he’s a basketball-turned-football guy, so he’s going to have to get a little more nasty if he’s ever going to move college-sized defenders. But he’s got the frame to eventually do that.”

Davis received his first football offer in May from LSU. He picked up an offer from Tennessee just two days later, on the same day he added offers from Texas, Florida and Texas A&M.

Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Arkansas, Oregon, Penn State, Missouri, South Carolina and Virginia Tech are among the other schools that have extended offers to Davis, who has been one of the Vols’ early top tight-end targets in the 2023 class for more than six months. He visited Tennessee for the first time in June and returned Oct. 16 for its home game against Ole Miss.

Davis continued to improve his stock during his junior season, which he ended Saturday night by helping Collins Hill win its first state championship. He caught 61 passes for 755 yards and eight touchdowns this year.

Ivins said he believes Davis, who plans to be an early enrollee in the 2023 class, is capable of making an early impact for the Vols as an athletic, versatile tight end.

“I watched Collins Hill in Georgia’s state playoffs a few weeks ago against Lowndes, and Davis was the best player on the field at times, which says a lot,” Ivins said. “I think he has what it takes to make an impact in the passing game right away, and I’m interested to see what he looks like after this spring, as I have a hunch that he’s probably someone that should be higher in the rankings.”
