Gaetzgate: Gaetz under investigation for being a pedo

You didn’t read your “link” either.

Very few states use a single age of consent as you and your map imply and the law doesn’t end at age difference.

More than half of states criminalize sexual contact with someone under the age of 18 in some context. For some of those states that context may only include incest, but for many (including Tennessee and Oklahoma) it involves adults in positions of authority such as teachers, coaches, employers, arguably tutors, etc. etc.

As a general rule of thumb, the age varies significantly state to state. And that did not include coaches, teachers, et al exceptions.

You're splitting hairs, counselor.

Yes, but it has to do with authority not age.. I did read and comprehend it... It’s not about age; it’s about being in a position of power.
Then it wasn’t a very good resource.

If this were true, why is there still an age of consent involved? It’s because the same balancing principles apply as in statutory rape, but the increased hazards (stigmatization, coercion, etc.) of a relationship with an authority figure are heightened. So, the bar for avoiding criminal consequences is raised.

Over a certain age, the consequences of abusing authority become civil because both individuals presumably have a higher degree of autonomy as a result of their being legal adults and being legally emancipated from their parent or guardian.

If age weren’t a determining factor, then workplace sexual harassment would be a crime. It would be a crime for college professors to sleep with their students.
It may be culturally outdated, arbitrary, government overreach, etc. but it’s still (usually) a crime for a teacher to engage in sex with a 17 year old student.

At my local HS a teacher left his wife to marry a newly turned 18 year old (former) student

maybe it was nothing but professional the whole time until she turned 18 and they fell in love

I’m not. She was responding to a post about teachers sleeping with students from 15-18 years old and said something to the effect of “it’s not like it’s a crime is it?” And then said there’s no difference between a teacher and a politician.

To the extent the comment was generic with respect to the relationship, it’s correct as amended to “most places,” and “17 and above.”

but my son can be groped by an older women and that’s okay? Because he’s a dude? Also, what if one of your daughters is only only attracted to older men? Does she not have the freedom to choose for herself? I don’t think some of y’all give women/ girls enough credit for their own devious behavior... we invented coat hanger abortions after all...
I’m just speaking for me personally.... had I been 15 and a hot teacher wanted me.... I’d have been cool with it..... I’m a parent now and there would be definite issues between myself and a teacher making moves on my kids. ... boy or girl.

Looks more like a selling point than extortion. Telling someone that helping an American imprisoned in Iran could foster sympathy for his own issues in D.C. is not the same thing as offering to withhold damaging information in exchange for money, i.e. extortion. Might not have been a good sales pitch.

What about the 17 year old college student sleeping with his or her professor? It’s that illegal? It happens!!! The reason it is illegal at the secondary level is because it is a public school student being served by that teacher. The student could be 19 and the teacher would be guilty. It has nothing to do with age once the person is of legal age of consent.
