Id go! Why wouldnt i? Free parking :eek:k: Tailgate at home.

Last this came up i was all for it, My concerns was pulling it off with all the buildings (GoodYear, Media Center, VictoryLane, Fuel Pumps) etc.

I would also have to assume there would be some temporary seating moved in? Not that 160,000 seats isnt enough, But to pull the seating some how down onto the track for a much better view.

This comes up every so often, Both schools end up having their own issues with it and it dies down again.
If it was a one off game against VT, I'll VOLUNTEER to help put up the goal posts.

That's what I was thinking. It would be easy enough to build some stands close to the field. We'll make all the Hokies sit in the nosebleed just because that's the way it should be.

Hokies :stinker2:

Let me list the positives:

1. We would win.
2. 20 million dollars.
3. easy drive
4. Having fun
5. Making history
6. National TV

The negatives:

1. some people will be mad

If this comes off there will be more mini-tvs at this event than any in history. It's one thing to watch a race car from 1/3 of a mile but trying to keep up with a football would be useless.

I think it trivializes our sport. I also am not sold that this will be such a huge media bonanza if it were done every year. At some point it would be seen for what it is; a cheap media ploy to put money in the athletic departments pockets and a rich race track owner gets richer.

The fan loses unless all they're interested in is a party. The serious fan wants to watch the line play. How can you do that from such long distances?

I see your point, but BMS is not like Charlotte or Daytona. You would be able to see pretty easily and like I said before, this appears to just be one game. It's not like BMS is going to become the new Neyland Stadium or anything.

Though im not sure what they would do about the huge scoring pylon?

If Smith wants to pull this off, I dont see where he makes nearly what he'll have to spend. From the get go he'd be out $40 million and Lord knows what it would cost to redo, undo and redo.
Stadium/Field construction would have to start by Sept 1st. One would have to believe he isnt just talking to hear himself rattle? Alot of consulting with NCCA,NFL officials and experts in this type of re/construction would have to be done.

An NFL preseason game was played at Bristol International Raceway in the 60's. I have the details somewhere in an old program, But that was then and BMS now is a completely different animal.

I did this before and I'll do it again. Using the dimensions given on the BMS website, and giving it the benefit of the doubt when unsure of exact techniques of measurement, here's a diagram of a regulation college football field inside the track.

The infield alone at BMS is reported at 10 acres, almost exactly TEN TIMES the acreage of a football field and enzones (43,200 sq ft -- an acre = 43,560 sq ft). Roughly looking at this diagram, that looks about right. Also, the bank of the straightaways is only 16 degrees. Having climbed the steep stairs of Neyland many a time, I can assure you that 16 degrees of elevation would not give you an even decent view above the spectator directly in front of you.

SO. . . . best case scenario, the front row of the existing grandstands along the straighaways (the closest seats to the field, at the 50) would put you right at 73 yards away from the sideline.

And I ask you: how much would any of you pay for an opportunity to sit 75-150+ yards away from the closest part of the field just for the novelty of a game in a racetrack, or be slightly closer with absolutely no view, and who would trade that for an October saturday at Neyland?

You might as well rent a chalet on one of the nearby mountains and set up a powerful telescope.

I wonder if the owner is just doing this for publicity. The logistics do seem formidable.

1. The Appalachia shootout.
2. Beats the $62,000 that Texas & Oklahoma get for the Red River.

I really don't see anything wrong with an OOC game on a neutral field. If they do it I hope they are smart enough to get at least a two year contract.

The AD dept have proven that they are lousy businessmen that allow their contracts to overload their income stream. Additionally, Mikey is showing that he has absolutely no regard for Tennessee Tradition.

Exactly. And I have my own "telescope" that sits connected to my cable box and directly in front of my couch.

Doc, you ever been to a race there?

I have, and I sat like row three of the turns, and I think that I could see a football game there pretty well.

Phil said tonight that he never really was interested in it. He said he didnt want to take away from the people in Knoxville that depend on home games. He also said that before, UT was gonna make about 3.7 Million, and that now, the increase "certainly has the AD looking at it".

Not to make any type of argument over Tennessee Tradition.
Im all VOLs and have been a little upset over some of the AD's recent decisions myself. As long as this has been brought up i have never really believed it would happen.

Now with Bruton flashing $20mil under Mike's nose it may turn into more than just a friendly discussion? Will it happen, i have no clue?

Id like to think that for the good of the University the money does sound nice.
As for Bruton, I honestly believe if this did go down. He wouldnt be selling race tickets for a football game. Ive been in and out of BMS since i was 4 years old. If Mike signs a deal its out of everyones hands. As the promoter Smith is he could pull off a first class event.
It makes no difference to me either way.

I've not been to a race there, no, but I've driven by enough tracks to appreciate the enormity of them. My scale diagram is using the dimensions posted on the BMS site, and is a "best-case" scenario. Provided that the field is in the center of the infield, your "row 3" seats in the turn would be somewhere in the vicinity of 100-150 or more yards from the very closest action. If the ball was on the far end of the field, that would put you about 250 yards away.

Can't help but doubt that your view from there would rival hanging over the tunnel at Neyland 10 yards from the endzone.

Can you scale out for us how large the ball would appear from the top row of the race track.

It would have to be akin to the proverbial needle in the haystack.

Well, for what it's worth, I have always been dead set against the Vols playing at BIR. I have been to races there and compared to a Saturday on campus, it would be about as atmospheric as watching the paint dry.

I would not go to the game although I could be there in about an hour and a half. I get so tired of my Chokie buddies running their yaps about Tech beating U.T. and all that, but all I need is the knowledge that they wouuldn't and couldn't. So I would love to see a four year home and away scheduled with the Neutered Turkeys.

A game at BIR? Not me. Sorry gang. I think it is a cheap imitation of a bigtime college football weekend. Where do we play next? Greensboro coliseum...Mudstock...Churchill Downs...Nashville Speedway...An island off the coast...the choices appear to be endless.

Just in case you didn't get my personal drift and opinion here, I am against it and I would not attend. :bad:
