1) Trae Golden was phenomenal. He's not going to score this much all the time obviously, but this performance should give everyone a lot of confidence moving forward in our ability to compete with Trae leading the way.

2.) Congratulations to Renaldo Woolridge. I have been a huge, huge critic of his. Tonight was the best all-around game I've ever seen him play. He blocked shots, rebounded well, hit some jumpers and made a beautiful pump fake that led to a dunk. Great game, Renaldo. :hi:

3.) The shot selection of this team is excellent for the most part. We still get the occasional stupid shot from McRae and Tatum, but all in all, we take good shots. That's a credit to Coach Martin and a credit to quality point guard play.

4.) The defensive effort again was solid. They are so much more fundamentally sound this year than last. They held Greensboro to 35% from the field for the game, and just generally made life hard for them the entire game.

5) Congratulations to Coach Martin on his first win as our head coach. This team is well-coached and disciplined, and there couldn't have possibly been a better way to kick off the season with our performance tonight.

Go Vols!

Agree on all points. I was pretty impressed with the outside shooting and shot selection. Much more disciplined that I remember in any game last season.

Good job lawvol.

Great game tonight by the Vols, but we need to improve on the low post defense, and there is a glaring weakness when it comes to blocking out on the box to prevent offensive rebounding. Luckily, those things are very coachable and are going to require Hall and Maymon to show some "want to" in there. I hope that Martin can motivate them to get the job done.

Renaldo played very well. I was pleasantly shocked.

Also, Maymon is triple the player he was last year.

Was it me, or did Trae's shooting stroke just look a lot better?

I noticed it in the Carson-Newman games, kid must of went to see the shot doctor. Seriously though his form is much improved, it was rancid last year

Agreed on all points. Excellent post.

Was extremely shocked at how well Swiper played, hat off to him. Cuonzo's a really good guy, met him during the postgame show and he strikes me as a very likable fellow.

Agree, Law, with your five points. I will add, however:

6. Maymon is a man and will be huge for us this year.

7. The inside game needs serious, serious work. Swiper and Maymon both played well and we still got beaten on the glass. That's going to lose us games if we're not careful.

Our offense is a Van Gogh compared to last year's finger painting with feces. Anyone who was worried about this team being entertaining to watch needs to pull their head out of the sand.

Our offense is much improved. Better shot selection, better shooters, better ball movement than last years team. I guess everyone is not standing around waiting on Scotty or Tobias to do something. Golden is going to be a special player. Not only can he stroke it from outside, he can take it to the hole in traffic with his strong upper body. He'll be one of the best PG's in the SEC this year. I hope Hall and Tatum pick it up. Maymon looked very good and Woolridge is much improved. Not much depth. Foul trouble will be our nemesis with no quality back-ups besides McBee.

Thought Washpun, and Richardson showed some quickness to the hole as well. They will be able to help us, but are a year away.

Go Vols!

First off, great game summary, Law! I'm just going to add my thoughts to what you already said.

1. Point play was VERY solid tonight! Golden was hot on both ends of the court! He led the team in scoring and was second in rebounding! Washpun is playing like a freshman and in my mind he just needs constructive playing time. My daughter who plays high school ball, commented that he was chasing too much on defense.

2. Woolridge had a great game! I saw much more hustle out of him, compared to the LMU game. He was switching off on defense well and hedging on the screens. He was a force on the boards, defensively in the second half. There were several favorable comments about his play tonight from people in my section. Had a nice stroke on that 3 as well! Just a terrific all around game! My daughter's comment on Woolridge was the same as mine. He needs to go straight up when he shoots. He is still fading away on his jump shots. You won't draw the fouls that way.

3. Nothing else to say about the shooting. It was just fantastic!

4. Good win for CCM tonight! He seemed to be more animated tonight. I thought he seemed a little more laid back at the LMU game. I didn't see that tonight at all. I liked what I saw!

5. We still lack a low game. We got beat on the boards tonight. Part of that was a very active defense. 0ur bigs were moving with the ball more and I think they were more out of position. However, except for a short period at the beginning of the second half, we challenged just about every shoot. Defense is much more active compared to last year! Maymon is still a load in the paint!

6. My daughter said McBee needs to lose the stache. She said it wasn't working for him. My wife said he looks like he is playing in the 70's. I got to agree with both of those observations! He had a good game though!

That defensive stand won't work against the better teams. They're not as aggressive imo as they've been in the previous years. At least some 3s were finding their way in. Exciting first game to watch. Go Vols!

There's nothing wrong with how they are playing defense. It's better than last year at this point.

Can't say enough about Golden tonight. He was fantastic.

Tatum is what he is. If you need him to be a roleplayer, he'll be a roleplayer. If you need him to be a go-to scorer, he'll be a roleplayer. He'll have the occasional game where he's making shots and he "goes off" for 15, but I think tonight is just about who he is as a player.

I'll be interested to see how Maymon fares against bigger post players than he's seen thus far. He not long and he doesn't have much lift, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him struggle a lot with longer players. He could be bulky enough to push the tall, thin guys around, though, but he'll have to work hard at it. We'll see what happens.
