Game Summary

Agree on all counts. One correction though, UNCG shot 41.5% from the field, which is respectable. It's just not enough to beat an SEC team on their home court when they shoot nearly 65% from the field.

Golden looks like a whole different player.

Hall would not start for any other SEC team. He has regressed so much since his freshman year. Out of position on D, though when he gets good position, he usually makes a good defensive play. Lazy and lethargic on offense.

Tatum and Woolridge played well; much better than in either exhibition.

The four newcomers combined for 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 blocks, and 4 turnovers in 38 total minutes. Ouch. I hope we don't lose any starters to injury for an extended period of time.

Damn FSS showed them with 35%. I should have known to just look up the box score myself.

There's nothing wrong with how they are playing defense. It's better than last year at this point.

Let's don't get too excited. We haven't played anyone yet. Report back after we get back from Hawii.

Well coached. Good effort. I am excited to see several players improved from last year but UNC Greensboro is not Kentucky or Florida. I am just excited that they look like a well coached team at this point. Some of the starters looked tired during the game so we will need to build some depth.

Most exciting moments for me - Swiper boy boxing out for a rebound and Porn Stash playing good tight d.

I don't see how saying they played better defense tonight than they did against similar teams last year is getting too excited.

Yes, we did. It's a clear area that needs improvement.

Also hope that our bigs man up in the paint. I think UNCG scored most of their points within 10 feet. Am I wrong? We will be hard pressed to shoot that well in every single game, and if we continue to give up 42% from the field it could be a long season. A win's a win, though, and it's just the first game.

Maymon has to get more up into the post guy that's turning and shooting over him. He just kinda stood there with a hand up; people are going to be able to shoot over him because he's undersized. He has to get more into a post player's body as they're shooting to affect the shot.

We need a shot blocker. Badly.

Haven't watched the game yet. DVR'd it. Looking at the box score, Hall continues to be non-existent. We need more from him.

In the early going, Golden and Maymon appear to be the most improved. Maymon looked like a bull in a china shop last year. If he could get any help at all from Hall, his game might just improve more. Hall has regressed for some reason. Still way early in the season for him to get going.

I agree completely. Thought the exact same thing. I think most of that is just confidence.

Not sure if anyone has said this, didn't look through whole thread. But we have a coach who could shoot it a bit and having changed my shot along the way with some good coaching, you can literally go from average to very good overnight with the right technique being taught. I would imagine they have been told to keep the elbow in a bit for Trae and not wind up as much for McBee. Will be interested to see if they keep it up.

Hall had a stretch in the second half that was the best basketball of his career. Let's hope he can build on it. Made a couple of excellent post moves.

I've said it before, Hall is the key to this team winning a few more games than it should. He is the only one with the potential to be a shot-blocker AND a scorer. His lost post moves in the second half were an encouraging step, and I expect them to build on that in the next game and feed him low. Get him some 1 on 1's down in the paint and let him go to work. I know some people are saying he has regressed and whatnot, but to his credit, he didn't have a lot of opportunity tonight (especially in the first half) to show up on the stat sheet.

If Tennessee is going to be more than what we think they are now, Hall has to be a factor.

Kenny is still way to indecisive down on the block.

If our defense holds teams to 42% shooting from the field I think we'll be in pretty good shape.....

Hall ahs to learn to stay out of foul trouble. Two early fouls and he sat for almost the entire first half.

but it wasn't better than that game he played against Alabama in Tuscaloosa as a freshman. He looked like a future All-SEC guy that night, rebounding, blocking shots and jamming everything.

42% defensive FG% isn't really anything special defensively. This team really needs to keep opponents in the 30's (specifically, low to mid 30's to be successful). We aren't going to hit 15 3's every game to mask average shot defense.

Like you said the defense was good though. Uncg hit a lot of contested shots. I can handle a team shooting a good percentage if we make them work for it. Last years team gave up way too many easy shots.

UNCG also hit a lot of uncontested, easy shots that we gave up. They only turned the ball over 10 times IIRC, and as ZJC pointed out in another thread, our D only forced 7 of them. We were killed on the defensive boards as well.

Our own hot shooting hand masked a very average defensive performance against a bad team. It will take better rebounding, better TO margin, and better FG% defense to beat the meat of our schedule, as we probably won't hit 15 3's in a game again this year.
