1.) Tennessee played a hard-nosed, tough game. Nothing to be ashamed about. The defense intensity was good throughout.

2.) We missed enough layups to have won the game by 6 or 8. Most of them weren't even tough shots, just point blank layups. Maymon has to finish those in the future.

3.) Yemi played excellent. He got out of position a few times, but his effort was excellent.

4.) You can't expect to beat Duke without hitting a three pointer the entire night. It's a testament to our play that we kept it competitive while shooting it horribly.

5.) Tennessee can beat Memphis tomorrow. Duke is significantly better than Michigan and will prove it tomorrow. And, Tennessee played Duke much, much harder than Memphis played Michigan.

6.) All in all, I'd give the game a 7 out of 10. Most of that is based on great effort. That was great to see, and the offense will come.

7.) It was neat seeing Tennessee playing against Coach K. I have more respect for Duke's program than any other.

8.) Kudos to Duke for making life tough for Trae Golden. However, it is clear that Trae Golden is going to have a hell of a year barring injury.

9.) Let's beat the piss out of Memphis tomorrow and send Mr. Stokes a little message.

10.) Go Vols!

Great job Law. I should've know better. When I saw that Rivers wasnt guarding Golden, that is the reason coach K has over 900. He would've outmuscled Rivers the whole game.

I think this is the first game summary I've read from you that got me pumped up enough to riot and burn a couch :)

No. But seriously...I agree 100% with every point you made. It was pretty awesome to see us play against Duke. In fact, I was impressed hearing Bert fumble through the Duke players names on my ride home from work. Michigan did exactly what I thought they'd do today. Outcoach Pastner and show why he's overpaid for not making adjustments on defense and lose to a more balanced team.

Is it not the most refreshing thing in the world to see us hit our free throws and not just pass the ball around and settle for a tough shot?

I am really impressed with Martin, I was in a wait and see approach, not anymore, I'm convinced this guy can do MORE than Pearl did here and that is saying somthing.

Golden is All-SEC caliber and if Maymon can finish what he starts he will be a beast, he is in much better shape than last year.

Maymon is a tough matchup for anybody out there, especially if he gets some sort of shot going.

McRae and Golden can both be unbelievably special.

The referees, as I expected, had an impact on the game. Didn't win or lose it, and I loved seeing us nail our free throws... but there were some very, very obvious bail-out calls that Duke gets stepping off of the bus. There were phantom foul calls against both teams.

We play hard. Just plain tough. Sometimes it becomes chaotic, but... I am okay getting out-talented. We won't get outworked. We have a pretty darn good halfcourt set, and that was with Golden having to sit his fair share.

Rivers is a tough matchup, and already knows how to manipulate the hell out of a defender using the screen.

I think the most refreshing thing about this is that the reason we lost the game was not making shots and finishing layups, and that is easily fixable. If we had played well offensively, we win that game. Simple as that.

Yes. Even how we played, if we just sink a couple threes and get a couple bounces (ex: stealing ball from rivers, it bouncing to curry, oop to Kelly)... we win the game.

We kept cutting it to four, and they got bailed out by the zebras a few times, plus we could never get that one breakout play for a huge momentum swing.

Yeah they execute a little better they probably win that one. They left a lot of points out there. We'll know more about how good both these teams are in the coming days. That's the good thing about these tourneys. You get to find out a little about your team and you see what a few others have also.

I think Cam Tatum played a pretty good game too, I saw him hustle some and that is an improvement in itself.

Solid write up, LV. I didn't think Yemi played as well as you did, but I had some visitors half way through the 2nd. I'll be excited to see if his effort carries over to Memphis.

Considering the competition, Duke's bulk inside, and his inexperience, I felt he was really good. His play gives me confidence that he's going to be a solid player for us in the future.

Great effort by the Vols. If anyone still doubts Cuonzo, I hope tonight changed your mind. I love the way this guy coaches and how hard his team plays. Like others have said, Maymon has to be able to finish the chippies under the goal. GOlden is our best PG since Watson. Makes some great passes and can score from anywhere. Refs made sure the game was in Duke's control the first 3 minutes by calling 2 fouls on him.
