Golden getting in foul trouble early hurt. We did well while he was out, but could have done even better if he's in there more in the first half.

Golden is a huge part of our offense.

Absolutely right. Instead of hanging around and keeping the game close, we could have built a lead in the 1st half with Golden on the floor.

And it would have been a pain in whoever tried to guard him's ass all night.

LawVol, what do you think about Woolridge? From what I saw he kind of hurt us tonight. But I wasn't able to watch all of it. So it might have been isolated.

I thought Woolridge has been decent in the other 2 games. Tonight, he was bad. He couldn't guard his position. He dropped a pass with absolutely no pressure. He walked with absolutely no ball pressure, and he missed at least one point blank layup. It was the old Woolridge tonight; however, he had shown flashes of playing at a much higher level against the two previous teams.

Ok thanks for the input. I saw where he walked. And like you said, he just seemed too small to be guarding his position. That led to some fouls too. Hopefully he steps it up against Memphis now.

Golden just looks so much more confident this year. We've lacked consistent point guard play for a while, and it looks like we may have consistency this year.

Great effort. Loved it. Keep it up and we'll beat a few good ones, me thinks. Now if Hall could just stop playing like Hall and if Wooleridge could just stop playing like Swiperboy....

9.) Let's beat the piss out of Memphis tomorrow and send Mr. Stokes a little message.

10.) Go Vols!

This. Nothing is sweeter than beating Tiger High when they're already picking out the spot for their Final Four banner in FedEx.

I have a feeling that Memphis is going to be playing with more effort ad better poise tomorrow. GO VOLS!!

Good effort against a quality opponent. I thought we threw up some bad shots, especially late in the first half, and Duke made us pay for it.

I still think the talent is below what we need to compete for top tier in the SEC but that will come. Well coached team

Golden is a completely different player this year, no doubt. He's a stud and I'm excited to see him play. Can't believe how big of a jump he has made so early.

I agree with all the points, and while I agree that the missed layups are easy to fix, Tennessee has had a knack for consistently missing them the last 3 years. Hope it changes this year.

Agree Woolridge way to many mistakes. He did show a little hustle rebounding, but that did not make up for what he cost us. I think Washpun did a good job not making mistakes against a good defense. Esp for a freshman. Just holding us togather until Golden could get back out there. Golden's looks unstopable at times. I think The future is bright. we got leftover tallent in this class when kids see how good we can be under CCM. We may actually surpass where CBP took us. GBO,VFL.

I don't think I have ever seen a team have each and every player play with absolutely no fear. Even Kenny Hall was aggressive to get his shot at the end of the game(hope that gets him going). Every player played that game to win and that tells me they are buying what CM is selling. Any concerns about the difficulty of our schedule beating that out of us? I hope we haven't bitten off more than we can chew in scheduling.

1.) Tennessee played a hard-nosed, tough game. Nothing to be ashamed about. The defense intensity was good throughout.

2.) We missed enough layups to have won the game by 6 or 8. Most of them weren't even tough shots, just point blank layups. Maymon has to finish those in the future.

3.) Yemi played excellent. He got out of position a few times, but his effort was excellent.

4.) You can't expect to beat Duke without hitting a three pointer the entire night. It's a testament to our play that we kept it competitive while shooting it horribly.

5.) Tennessee can beat Memphis tomorrow. Duke is significantly better than Michigan and will prove it tomorrow. And, Tennessee played Duke much, much harder than Memphis played Michigan.

6.) All in all, I'd give the game a 7 out of 10. Most of that is based on great effort. That was great to see, and the offense will come.

7.) It was neat seeing Tennessee playing against Coach K. I have more respect for Duke's program than any other.

8.) Kudos to Duke for making life tough for Trae Golden. However, it is clear that Trae Golden is going to have a hell of a year barring injury.

9.) Let's beat the piss out of Memphis tomorrow and send Mr. Stokes a little message.

10.) Go Vols!

Great summary! I love reading your stuff!

I think the big thing no one is talking about is Washpun. Especially seeing how much time he had to play, he looked much better as in he didn't directly hurt us being on the court. Saying ho looked good would be a vast overstatement but he looked like he is progressing. Yemi also looked that way.

I am a bit obsessed with these 2 guys because when they were signed a lot of folks didn't want them. They are more than anyone CCM's guys. I honestly believe that before their time is up they will be major contributors on this squad. If he can develop these guys it bodes really well for the future because, though I think they are much better players than most think, from here on he will be able to fairly easily recruit better guys.

Washpun played MUCH better.

Considering the competition, Duke's bulk inside, and his inexperience, I felt he was really good. His play gives me confidence that he's going to be a solid player for us in the future.

Agree LV. Yemi looked good in his minutes. He hustled on every play and he outmuscled Duke's big men for position and on box-outs. Given his inexperience, he looks more focused and involved than Kenny Hall, although Hall played well in the final 5 minutes last night.

The Sportscenter recap of the game was BS. All they showed was Duke highlights and they talked like they blew us out of the water.

I think you made a point that everyone else has missed. Washpun came in an did an excellent job in relief of Golden in the first half. While he is not an offensive threat at this time, he proved he can be an adequate back-up at the point. I really didn't believe he was ready to do that until this game. Excellent defensive player.

This team is playing better than I expected them to at this point. Today's game should be another example of how much progress this team has made under CM.

I finally got to watch the game after DVR'ing last night and if we can make some bunnies and hit a damn 3 we could've been right in that thing at the end. Our FT shooting is what kept us in it. I didn't think I would ever type that statement.

Duke went on their run in the 1st half when we were up 21-16 and we started taking bad shots. McRae took some early 3's and Maymon even took one that I could remember. We can get those shots anytime we want. Duke did a very good job at shutting us down on the perimeter. Coach K knew we were strong there and took it away. Couple that with all the missed bunnies and that was pretty much the difference in the game.

Positives:

- Maymon continues to impress. I didn't think he would be the player that he has been so far.
- Washpun is quick as a hiccup. Golden only played 4 minutes in the 1st half if I heard Dykes right and we were right there with Duke pretty much the whole way. If you would've told most people that, you would've thought Duke was going to have a 15+ lead at halftime.
- I'm impressed with Miller's athleticism.

Negatives:

- Duke went at Golden and got him out of the game. Going forward, every team knows what kind of team we are without Golden. Look for teams to get him out of the game early in foul trouble from here on out. Hopefully, Washpun steps up to the challenge.
- Woolridge. On three straight occurences in the 1st half, he allowed his defender to climb his back (twice) and beat him to the ball. That's pathetic.
- Kenny Hall. I'm getting tired of typing this so nothing else really needs to be said. He continues to give us very little other than fouls.
- Poor shot selection and missed bunnies. Duke was the cause of a lot of that and the missed bunnies were probably because guys were having to alter their shots because of the size differential under the basket.

All in all, we're further along than I thought we would be at this point. We are competitive and will give some teams some trouble if we keep playing with tenacity. We don't have a lot of room for error and especially if Golden gets into foul trouble, but this team looks fairly disciplined outside of the shot selection on occasions.

It'll be interesting to see us matchup with Memphis. They are going to be quicker than Duke, but not nearly as disciplined. Duke makes you pay with bad shot selection. I hope our legs are there, but I give us a better chance than I had thought we would have at the beginning of the season.

I agree fully. Memphis will not be nearly as well coached or disciplined as Duke. If we play a half-court game and don't get into a running game with them, we should be fine.
