I don't. You simply adjust your man to man defense to control the dribble drive. There's no reason to randomly go to a defense that you never play when you can tweak the defense that you do play.
LV,
Hate to break it to you, but other poster's opinions are just as valuable as yours. I know you have some sort of man-crush on Martin, but let up a little when someone criticizes the strategic moves by the rookie coach. if he doesn't adjust at some point this year, Tennessee will continue to lose close games like this one and will get blown out in others.
I saw a talent depleted team in Tennessee last night get outclassed by one player and a collection of DII players.

careful, you might get labeled a University of Pearl supporter and get ignored by the all knowing lawvol...

Larkin, maybe you have trouble reading, I didn't attack anyone criticizing Martin. I said myself I would have doubled Hamilton off the high screen. I did say I did not think playing zone against a team that shot the lights out would be a good idea. That has nothing to do with sticking up for Martin. Pl3 and I were both discussing things Martin SHOULD have done. You guys are really kind of sad.
Has there ever been, or will there ever be, a time when this is not true? I doubt it.
That is what he is--generally good for a few nice shots a game, along with some real duds.
1) Trae Golden was simply dominated tonight. Reggie Hamilton utterly destroyed him. He played selfish, lazy, and nonchalant. It's time for Martin to put a foot in his ass.
2.) The perimeter defense was pretty piss poor the entire night. This team can't allow anyone to score 89 points and expect to win.
3.) Jordan McRae played a fantastic game. Hopefully, he'll continue to play at a high level.
4.) Cam Tatum shot the ball well. Yet, he misses shots he simply should not miss.
5.) Jeronne Maymon was a no show. He didn't build on the Memphis performance. I'm curious if the achilles is still bothering him.
6.) This team is tired, I'm sure. It's not an excuse for their play, but it is most likely a fact.
7.) Tonight, the bench did little to nothing; not a good game on either end.
8.) Oakland has an impressive team for a mid major. Reggie Hamilton looks like he could play for just about anyone.
9.) This team had better get the game Monday night against Pittsburgh if we're serious about being a bubble team this year.
10.) All in all, this was a step back from our progress we made in Maui. Not a lot of positives to take from this one.
1. First of all another good summary LV! I think we will see Hamilton playing at the next level. Best PG I've seen all year! Big difference between Golden and Hamilton is experience and strength. We're talking Senior verses Sophomore. We tried 4 different guys on him last night and not one stopped him. Washpun probably had the best success.
2. The defense was poor. There were too many drives to the basket with Volunteers standing around watching with their thumbs up their butts. I thought they looked tired. That is a long flight back from Hawaii. This was not the best game to schedule coming back.
3. Jordon McRae kept us in that game. Oakland didn't have an answer for him, just as we didn't have an answer for Hamilton.
4. Cam also kept us in the game. Both he and McRae made shots when we needed them too. It was a good night for Cam. I was glad to see it.
5. I wish they had sat Maymon this game. He was not 100% and it showed in his free throw shooting (hardly used his legs and was arming everything) and his rebounding. He seemed to struggle getting quickly off the ground. I hope he is healed and ready to go against Pitt. We are going to need him!
6. I thought they looked tired from the get go, but they seemed to dig down and bring it in the 2nd half. I thought the plays that killed us were the Washpun missed dunk and Maymon's mishandling of a lay up. If we hit those two back to back plays we cut the lead to one. Instead after Maymon turned the ball over, they scored 5 quick points and it went back to a 10 point game.
7. Yemi and Washpun came in and gave us some good minutes on defense but not on offense. Woolridge, Richardson and Miller were not impressive. What has happened to McBee. He was on fire at the beginning of the season. The last couple of games he's not hit much at all. He had a goose egg last night!
8. Oakland is a fun team to watch. They are tenacious and well coached.
9. You are correct LV, if they play like this against Pitt, we'll go down in flames. If we come out playing like we did against Memphis, we'll beat Pitt in regulation. This Tennessee Team may be a Jackyll and Hide team all season long.
10. It's a step back, but it's early in the season, so my concerns are few right now. If this came in January, then I wouldn't be happy at all. It's too early in the season right now. Martin has some time to get everything back on an even keel.
It's interesting to note how many teams that played in Maui are dropping road games scheduled shortly after their return.
Michigan Duke TN
Not comparing our situation to either but we're a very young squad playing a mid major in their gym in the biggest game in their history.
Has to be some letdown. Not an excuse. Just an observation.
Coach K may have used it as an excuse.Coach K used that excuse last night and thats what it is.
When you are 18 to 22 years old jet lag doesn't last for days and it doesn't last for days with us seniors either.
What I am afraid of is that the play of Duke and Memphis
after Maui is a telling point on us.
Coach K may have used it as an excuse.
Our guy didn't.
Neither did our players.
From Griff:
Golden also said his defense needs a lot of work.
"We got our butts kicked, and we need to guard better, especially me,'' Golden said. "Me and Jeronne (Maymon) are the leaders, and we have to do a better job.''
Lawvol, you really can't have reasonable discussions with posters who prove to know nothing about basketball. If you will just bash all current coaches and praise our past coaches, you will become a hero to many on here.
