Game Thread: #17/19 LADY VOLS VS. TEXAS

This is going to sound ridiculous to many, and I probably shouldn't even type this, but since I'm a glutton for punishment...

I think Tennessee's biggest "problem" in the past 20 years is that its coaches are always sticklers for staying within the NCAA rules for amount of time allowed for student-athletes to engage in basketball related activity. As other top programs became unmonitored experts on how to get around the 20-hour rule, it certainly put the ones who insisted on "doing things the right way" at a competitive disadvantage.

This isn't a good sign. Losing to an unranked Texas team. But...I am nowhere near doubting KJH as our long term answer. There will be a lot of losses along the way...and coaching wise I think we're in good hands...at this point. This one was disappointing however. We should be better than them. Experts agreed. But...it is what it is. Hopefully just a down game.

In this game we used two timeouts at the end as strategic timeouts. The third one was called to run a play. Even the announcer said that she was probably using this occasion and time to teach them for future instances like this. ... when we used the third time out we were down two scores with less than six seconds left on the clock if I remember correctly ...That said, we could have used each of the other two timeouts as strategy instead of emergencies. No, there's no guarantee of timeout would have affected things. But there is definitely a guarantee that not calling a timeout will affect things.

I am going to be hard on any staff at UT about this because I know that players look to the bench and look to the coach at times to save them. That's a coach's job. You call them back you tell them what they need to hear and you send them back out there and give them a chance to turn it back around. Does it work every time, nope!. Does it work some of the time absolutely so.

I really thought we would cut the rotation down for this game and not multiple substitute like we did. It is just shocking to me when we bring in Rennie, Burrell, Horston, Kk, and Harris to be the five on the floor. Key only 21 minutes same for Burrell hopefully they both get closer to 30. Key 4 of 6 KK 2 of 10 Harris 3 of 8.

Sorry, but Texas is NO top tier team! Please don't use the "oh this team is so young" excuse every year.

The team is young, that is not an excuse, that is a fact. The youth of a team can affect team play. I have seen it first hand as a high school coach. You don’t look necessarily at how a young team starts you look for improvements as the year progresses. Texas has some top tier talent, two of the players had injuries to start the year. Right now Texas has not played like a top tier team, however, because of their record does not mean they did not have the talent to beat us. Not one team we played prior to playing Texas, really challenged us. This is the first time this year we played a team who equaled our height and talent, and a little more playing experience. We will get there if we can be a little patient.

...And freshman Jordan Horston seemed completely out of sorts yesterday.

I think yesterday was a bit of a wake-up call for Jordan. This was by far the toughest team we've played all season and a little taste of what the SEC season will bring.

the offense is enemic enough, so why does harper insist on the crazy substitution pattern that just makes things worst. also, horston is a greatly talented guard that has had it rough lately. quit pulling her so quick and let her stay out there and work through her mistakes.

Jordan's mostly been taken out due to foul trouble or the wholesale substitution pattern (and I'm not in favor of the latter) but I don't think KJH has been yanking her due to mistakes.

Didn’t watch the game but read the box score. I just want to know how we lost to Texas and we kept both CC and JH under 8 total points? Was their PG play that much superior than ours??

I agree with you 100% on Rae she needs to be in the starting lineup and move Brown to the bench not in a negative way. I just think Rae brings more to the table then Brown.
Great potential and energy and agree she brings more than Brown - more turnovers, more wild shots, more one on one me plays, more drive the lane to take on three defenders and end up on the floor plays. If she ever learns to play within a team concept and when to rein it in a bit she has all the tools to be great.

need to practice our 1 to 2 footers...missed 6-8...we could have won the game just by making half of them under the basket...the Lady Longhorns should never have been in the game, but,...they won...just a very bad day for the team all around...:D

GO LADY VOLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Year 2 she is still doing it and something tells me in year 4 she will still be doing it.

Hi Coach J, I hope KH would read some of
Your comments on time out issues

I could hear nearly everyone in my vicinity on Sunday saying “Call a time out!” “Why doesn’t she call time to stop their momentum?!!” “FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, TIME OUUUUUUUUTTTTT!”

Like me, people are generally tickled pink with the Harpers, their staff and the job they are all doing, but some of those people (including myself) are also having trouble “trusting the process” if part of that process requires watching yet another Tennessee coach hoarding perfectly useful time-outs.

I can go totally along with the often jarring substitution patterns because that strategy could pay dividends later. But not calling time outs to calm your team and give them focus while also at least TRYING to halt the other team’s momentum is difficult for me. :( Karen Aston called a time out when we finally went up on them, I think, at 48-45 — and it worked. They stopped our momentum and regained their focus.

Coach J could be coaching this team and calling timeout out his wazoo and the LVs would be right where they are.
Sadly some truly believe that a time out at one specific point might have made a difference. Or a layup or FT made or a box out on a rebound. But Texas could play the same what if game. What if a couple players had not get in foul trouble what if we made a couple more put backs. There was a couple times in this game that another bucket or 2 from Texas and they win by 20! This game was probably closer to being a Texas blowout than a Lady Vol win!

I'm not saying the Lady Vols are down and out. I'm just saying better use of in-game tactics has been missing for over 7 years and I hope it doesn't continue to be. And by the way... Maybe not
