Game Thread: (19/12) Lady Vols vs. Georgia College (EXH)

It's hard to draw a lot of conclusions from a game with a mismatched opponent, and an exhibition game at that. I'm sure there were opening game jitters, etc. on both sides. And the freshmen and others trying to find a role and mesh with the team showing their in-experience was obvious. Al in all, I was pleased with the performance. I thought our starting five looked very good together, very potent. Dye is a terrific addition, filling a needed role.

There are some things that are independent of the opponent, such as free throw shooting, which was poor. Having difficulty making layups and bunnies was also frustrating to watch, and I don't think the opponent had very much to do with that.

But our three point shooting was 40%, not bad. Both Walker and Horston looked better shooting the 3, as did Tess and Rae, of course. We only took 17- 3 pt shots out of 88 total. I'd like to see us take more than that, especially more than those contested midrange shots taken in traffic and off balance. Striplin looked good in the post on offense. She did her work early and got very good position, then called for the ball and made it count when she got the pass. If we're going to play an in-to out game, the threat of scoring down low has to be real the way that Striplin made it. Green and Dye also looked good at the four. We have good depth at that position, that's for sure. Ball movement was generally good and crisp. I woud like to see Key want the ball down low more, and demand it, and put shots up and make people foul her.

Our defense was as aggressive as advertised. I'm glad to see it. We still seem to have trouble with the high ball screens - switch or don't switch. Their screening game was successful against us to get open midrange shots. But the number of steals and points off of turnovers was telling about our defense. We were very good in transition with showing good speed and control on the fast break. Even with a mis-matched opponent, I liked the way our defense looked most of the time.

I thought Miles and Wynn were very fast, and that's good to see. All of the freshmen played with jitters, the one most in control I thought was Striplin.

Rae is obviously the straw that stirs the drink, but I was encouraged at improvement I see from Walker and Horston and the addition of Dye. I think we will be a better team this season, and I'm ready for the journey!

Absolutely, thought we were quick and always moving, no standing around, other than when Miles stood while time went down, for a last shot (don’t understand your smallest player going to the basket for a last shot, but there it was).

Also, last year, there was passing under the basket, which led to turnovers, something I did not see in this game.

This game was well worth the wait, our team showed tons of potential, and I am excited for this season.

GLV!!!

enjoyable thread to read 90% plus observations about the game and players, including some salient responses from some of my favorite responders; no more han 5% boarders taking exception about other boarders. and of course a few responses from supporters of other teams.

I agree. Dye had an eye-poppingly impressive 7-point scoring start, and then was the first to go to the bench. I suppose Kellie had already seen enough of Alexus to know she's going to be a permanent starter. If Dye had played 40 minutes with the same scoring pace she started the game with, she could have scored 60!

One thing I hope does NOT happen is that Dye hesitates to score because she doesn't want to hog all the points, because I actually think she and Rae both could average 20 or more per game if they want to. I don't want anyone feeling like they have to hold back in deference to anyone else if they're feeling it and making shots. WINNING is the goal, and I hope all the players will support a newcomer like Dye scoring a ton if she can, and with her desire to get rebounds I believe she'll have more opportunities to score than ANYone else on the team. I want to see Rae grabbing more boards!
Wow this was spot on with what I was thinking last night because I don’t know if I was sleepy or not but it seemed there was a couple of times where the ball could’ve been passed to Dye and it wasn’t.

I’m not trying to think there’s a potential problem with chemistry, with her being a newcomer but I believe if given the opportunity Dye can be the leading scorer on this team.

I wasn't all that sure before but I think Dye may well be the answer for losing KK. She can shoot from 15 feet and she can elevate on shots and rebounds. KK ate space but didn't elevate all that much and didn't shoot much from the key. It is that element that this team needed more than anything to open up the lane for Tamari.

They need to treat like they treat Rennia get the ball in her hand and let her work

Lot of talk about Key's rebounding. What is wrong with 5 rebounds in 13 minutes of play? That is a huge amount for the minutes.
You could always be like Olivia Nelson Ododa who had 0 rebounds and like 2 points against a small Arkansas team and played 20+ minutes that even Geno was astonished at the end of the game I still laugh about it every now and then his tone in the presser was hilarious

You be the judge...

We will learn very little from this exhibition game. It will be more like a shoot around than a game. I guess we may see how they mesh together but that's about it.
Disagree. Lady Vols focused on themselves and how they could fulfill and execute the game plan and realize goals for personal improvement, including working as part of a team. The game wasn’t about Georgia College. Film will help them grow.

I didn't say the team wouldn't learn much. I said we, as fans wouldn't learn much.

Considering the quality of competition, not really. She could have had a couple of more but was beat to the board by GC's undersized front line...

I am just now getting around to watching the highlights video, and my oh MY! Striplin had a couple of incredible seals down low to get perfect position to receive the pass before scoring. Seeing a freshman do that so well made my day.

Speaking of getting good position, Keyen Green is amazing. She may be slightly undersized for a post these days, but she certainly makes the most of the strength of her body -- and her mind. You can really see how focused she is every minute she's on the floor.

And do we have a better finisher under the basket than Jordan Walker?! I don't think we do. She seems never to miss bunnies. She's scrappy as hell, too, always looking to poke the ball away. Opposing guards are not going to like her, but I sure do!

And yes, Wynn and Miles ARE extremely fast, are great passers, and already have an obvious feel for where the other is heading on fast breaks. They'll be a nightmare duo for opposing coaches by the time they're juniors. Mark my words.

Jessie Rennie has picked up a little foot speed, I noticed, and got herself a couple of nice layups because of it. Good job, Jess!

I also loved seeing Tess Darby turn up the aggressiveness last night. What I could see was that she was confident and had practiced enough to just play the game on instinct and without having to pause even a nanosecond to think about it. That was impressive.

Tamari Key is a beautiful young woman, and it's obvious from the photos she posts she thoroughly enjoys being pretty and feminine.

I'm all for that every minute of every day -- UNTIL TIPOFF on gameday. That's when I want Tamari to switch over to feeling like this on the inside:

:D

Yes, we know you LOVE SC😂 WE. GET. IT!

Question, I heard you sell a lot of season tickets but does Dawn buy a chunk of them? I heard she does it to fill the seats of course and give that home court advantage i mean she can do it (she has the means and probably writes it off on taxes). I just wondered if that's what she meant by catch us if you can with the fans? Is this true or common knowledge? This is NOT shady but a legit question. I sorta of admire her if she does.

Im sorry was at work all day and just got home but I’ve actually never heard of Dawn purchasing tickets for fans because if so why am I not in that number? 😂 maybe maybe not I’m honestly not sure but I can tell you that tons of Alumni support her and attend games as well as give donations to the school so while you might be right it could also be a stretch. Not exactly sure but when I find out I will let you know!

LV's had 64 rebounds, opponent had 33. No one on the opponent team had more than 4 rebounds, despite many of them playing much more than 13 mnutes.

Tamari's 5 in 13 minutes equates to 10 in 26, double figure rebounds in less than 30 minutes, a very good rebounding game. So if she was beaten to the boards, she was more likely beat by her own teammates, never a bad thing.

Since TK is 6'6 she should have at least 5 rebounds before the game starts, and another half dozen when she is not in the game. When in the game, she win every rebound, even when a shot is made (I know that seems impossible but she is 6'6 after all). By my calculations, she should be averaging about 115 rebounds per game.

It only took PB to make a 3 with less than a minute left to beat UT. Didnt Kellie and the LV have the lead at UCONN the year before? Hey Darth, Pat also was beat by Geno multiple times sometimes spanked. Give it a rest with Kellie already, it's pathetic at this point.

Exhibition games are just for the players to play against another team. After weeks of just playing each other it’s just a refreshing break to actually play someone else. Usually the competition is subpar so the only take from this game is they seemed to have lots of fun and no one got hurt!

Happens to everybody occasionally. Her career 40 minute rebounding average against all competition is 9.9 per 40 minutes played. That is excellent for any player.
