Game Thread: (20/22) Lady Vols vs. Ole Miss

My take, again not the expert some of you are! reading the post-game comments of the Mississippi coach the best 1-6 young team in the conference and one no one wants to play. Defend and Disrupt. Davis knew they would be a challenge, Harper did. This is the SEC.

And those of you who continue to respond to an ridiculously- as in extremely silly, comments on how one player acknowledges another I can only wonder?

Don't worry about style points, total points won by, any other stat. Only worry about wins and losses and thus far it has been a very good season for the Lady Vols. Let us hope they can keep it going. Some very difficult games ahead.

I don’t understand the JH hate? She’s a good kid, looks like a great teammate, with a great family. Folks, please remember her and TK are just sophomores. Geez!

So she didn't start out like "greatness",,,,DID ANYBODY start out good in that game!!????
Look at the stat sheet
temp001.jpg
5-8 shooting, 1 for 1 shooting the 3 ball, 2-2 FT's, 5 boards, 2 P fouls, 3rd in scoring, 3 assists, 1 block and 1 steal
4 turnovers (and she wasn't alone)
Except for the turnover stat, it was a very good outing.
But Haters gonna hate, so,,,,draw your sword, raise your lance,, keyboard warriors...Keep looking for a tree instead of seeing the beauty of the forest.

I am proud of how Jordan bounced back from a horrific first quarter.
Very proud
People forget Pat’s teams had games like this too. .

Great Point!

All they have to do is get together and tell her to stop. It doesn't have to be the coach the players need to have thin skin and tell other players anything they don't care for or dislike. This is not a difficult thing to do you have to speak up.
they may not like it in the moment cuz it might sting a little but at the end of the day its just a head slap ...Jordan isnt banging their head across the floor for goodness sake like I said if it REALLY bothered Destiny & Tamari they would have told her to stop

If it bothers them, just talk it out.

No soap bars in pillowcases like poor Leonard in Full Metal Jacket.

No one hates her. Just tired of her dribbling showcase that always ends badly. And the turnovers that seem like bonehead plays for someone so talented. If she would slow down and just think first she would be unstoppable. And keep the dribbling simple. Quit trying to look fancy.

I get that we don't want players to over-think, which can lead to hesitancy, which can also lead to turnovers. But until the fluid, comes-by-nature reactions are the rule, I agree with the recommendation to slow down. That has helped Rae immensely, and last night we see what happens when she allows the opponent to speed her up. You don't want to completely harness the colt, but you don't want her trying to run through barbed wire, either.

And the "fancy dribbling" comment is spot-on. For someone who has been prone to losing the handle and even dribbling off her foot, that needs to be nipped pronto. I believe it was against KY that she was facing off out front against the defender and started with the between the legs back and forth nonsense...as we saw with last night's final score, one careless possession could easily cost you the game. That simply looks like show-boating with no purpose to advance the ball. It's not like Jordan vs. Bird in scoring position. She was too far away to shoot and didn't drive, and if a teammate popped open down liw, she wouldn't have been able to get them the ball (if she had even see them).

The point guard's main role is to feed teammates the ball with the right speed, force, and entry point to match her teammates' abilities and preferences. Even when the point guard is the primary scoring option, the former passing rules apply. And the pg should be able to penetrate to break down the defense and then deliver the ball to the best shot available. Zipping a pass behind the back that sails out of bounds may impress novices, but it makes fans grit their teeth and puts grey hairs in coaches' heads.

The above commentary applies to all point guards. Any resemblance to any player, living or otherwise, is completely unintentional and coincidental.

'I will be doing a turnover analysis later today and will post it here...I will look at each of the 17 turnovers and give both situational detail and forced-unforced opinion

AAAARRGH! We have such a coach. Sometimes you have to give an opponent credit. Ole Miss played a hell of a game. They brought incredible defensive pressure and their new set of go to players hit clutch shots. The LVs made mistakes in the first but Ole Miss forced a lot of those errors. Per the ole cliche, Ole Miss played a lot a much higher level than their conference record would suggest.

I see a lot of positives in the LVs battling back from a double digit deficit.
Sign of a good team when you can pull off a win on a bad night. Ole Miss brought the best they had and still lost.

Continuing to have JH as primary ballhandler almost seems cruel at this point. Both to her and to us. It's not just the turnovers, the offense seems to stagnate when JH is at point bc she dribbles way, way too much and ball and player movement disappears as a result.. If Marta is out, there is zero reason not to move JH to 2. Jordan's 13 pts were obviously crucial and she had her best shooting night of the season including 2 huge fts late. Scoring and rebounding is how she can help us..

This is in no way "hate" towards the player; in my case its the opposite. This player is too valuable to keep asking her to play out of position and to her weaknesses. We need her to build her confidence, not erode it.

The head slapping they can work out amongst themselves.

All teams need this coach. Plus the player who never misses a shot, never makes a t.o., and "steps up" and "takes over" every single time the team needs it. Unfortunately we live in the real world where almost no one is capable of this. It's always the goal, obviously, and when it doesn't happen, its not because coach or players don't "want it". It's because humans sometimes succeed and sometimes fail. It's what makes it a game.
Good points!
I think Salary’s continued development will allow coach to play JH at point and 2. JH can be a big problem for defenders at the 2. Thanks for mentioning again that TK and JH are sophomores!
Some fans seem to want to pick on kids who come in with a high ranking. For almost all there is still a growth curve. In my mind I can think of one LV who came in and was immediately great and that was CP. That player is generational. We should be thankful she is a LVFL. Even Chamiqua was significantly better as a junior than a freshman.
Imagine JH next year with a relative performance jump like Rae has had. Again I say JH next AA after Rennia. Sunny here today in Tune town! Hope it’s sunny for all LV fans today!

Kellie needs to figure out inconsistent playing with this team fast.
I totally get your point but had to giggle a bit. If Kellie can figure out how to keep teenagers from being moody and get them to have consistent and high focus she would not need to coach. She could sell the info to parents of teenagers and be wealthier than Midas!

I'm not sure the "fancy dribbling" by JH is showboating at all. Seems like more a subconscious thing while she over thinks what else to do. Meanwhile the offense is standing around getting stagnant. Part of the bigger problem that PG just doesn't come naturally to JH.

IMO part of Rae's struggle was getting the ball late in the shot clock, post Dribbbly McDribbleton, forcing her to make something happen instantly. Which is the last position you ever want to leave Rae in.

Agree, if you notice, JoJo and Salray do the same thing once they get past halfcourt,,,pretty muc all guards take the that moment to doa dribble-drill move

If it bothers them, just talk it out.

This is a true military happening, though for our squad it was soap bars in a doubled-socks,,,Private Pinson caused us to do more than 100 pushups in just one day,,,in our eyes, he deserved his "soap party"

We have to quit hating on the players. If the coaches are not correcting bad playing, then that is on them. As I said before it is okay to point out mistakes. We all know that Horston makes a lot of mistakes at the point but have we not considered that she might be the best we have? KJH did replace her with Walker and things seemed to calm down. Horston is an athlete with some strong upsides. Let us fans not throw her under the bus because we become frustrated with her mistakes.

I’m sorry, but this is untrue. Both Salary and Walker got us into our offense much quicker. They may take one or two dribbles to get a look at the defense but both of them get it to the wing quickly and generally without turning it over.

Jordan stands and dribbles for close to 10 seconds at times. All that does is allow the defense to get set. You have to get into your offense immediately so you can run it long enough to get an open look. Horston still has to think wayyyy too hard about what needs to happen when she’s at the point. Doesn’t look natural at all. She also does not dribble with a purpose. Walker will dribble at her defender and force them to move. Jordan often has her momentum balanced AWAY from the defender which puts her on her heels. The defender can then just stand and reach creating live ball turnovers. As soon as they poke the ball loose it’s off to the races.

I LOVE Jordan’s game, her athleticism, and I LOVE seeing her play well. It can’t be like last night though. The first 3 minutes of that game were awful, and sadly for her, negated her good play the rest of the game. Until she’s consistent she’s going to catch flack from fans and the coaches. Kellie was none too pleased that Jordan called a timeout because she couldn’t even get us into our offense without panicking and turning it over.

Great opportunity to let Walker and Salary share the point and put Horston at the 4 and see what she can do. Just no Key and Kk in the game at the same time.

In fairness, I am looking at a replay doing an analysis for turnovers, I will watch for any 10 second drilling clinics and let you know how many there are

I agree, Madtownvol. Kellie did a good coaching job. The LVs missed Marta. Ole Miss played well.
