Game Thread: #23/23 Lady Vols versus #3/5 UCONN

We will have to agree to disagree. I think she makes smart decisions, takes care of the ball pretty well and is a good floor general. She needs to take more open looks, but overall I’m thrilled with her progress and I believe she can take us to the next level.
Not disagreeing that Jaz is our best option she is and she does take care of the ball better than others. But you would have to admit that her lateral quickness with the ball is not near elite. Look at Crystal last night that is what we our missing ability to play in traffic.

Lou Brown played way to much last night she was useless on both ends of the floor. Burrell needs to replace her in the lineup.
Brown: 24 mins, 3 pts, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 t.os
Burrell: 23 mins, 9 pts, 6 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 0 blocks, 3 t.o.s

This seems like damn even contribution here. In nearly the exact same amount of p.t., Burrell scored more, but took 12 shots to do it. Brown contributed more all around, with steals, assists and even a block. IMO good argument could be made for starting either, though I've always been a proponent of the prevailing theory that Rae has more potential spark off the bench, plus needs to watch things develop a bit before storming into the game, which is what she does for better or worse.

Lou, on the other hand, seems to have more of the steady hand and head you like to start the game with. I think to minimize her contributions to this team is wrong, we need her. I do wonder what she would be like if she were actually playing on two legs. Makes my old knees ache just watching her.

I wish KJH had given another game approach a shot, rather than going down the bench giving players random shots. Using our height advantage was the obvious strategy going in, but once Key got in foul trouble and then got visibly frustrated, and KK was clearly, to put it kindly, not the answer, we needed something different. Way too many KK minutes getting the same nonproductive result.

I wish KJH had given a smaller quicker lineup a shot. At least it might have sent a reset jolt through the LVs who were clearly off the rails at that point.

Lou Brown is, by far, the headiest, steadiest player on the Lady Vol roster. I shudder to think where we'd be without her right now. She has the experience and maturity to understand what's happening on the floor at all times and is able to suss out opportunities to make a difference. Her ability to find opportunities to take a charge has been one of the highlights of the season for me so far. Next is Rennia. My goodness, what a player!!!!! After Rennia? I'd say Jaz. If she were more of a consistent scoring threat she'd be All-SEC.

Jordan and Rae, though I adore them both and appreciate the many, many positives each brings to the team, those two really GOOD players are just a little too loosey-goosey with their body movements sometimes, and that is all that is keeping both of them from reaching GREAT player status. I'm not sure what, if anything, can be done about that, frankly. The beauty of both of them is that they ARE explosive and kinda unpredictable to opponents in the way they move. They both shut off their minds and just let their bodies go with whatever instinct it wants to give in to. Unfortunately, too often they realize that the instinct they gave in to was a bad choice ONLY after it is too late to do anything but feel bad that it didn't work for them.

I hate to see either of them have their spirits broken by reeling them in, as I fear that there may not be enough time in the season left for them to make the transition from inconsistent explosiveness to consistent headiness. That's gonna take some time. Can they do it? I sure hope so. I love them BOTH and am so darn proud of the way they give their all to this team and program. They've just got to make some adjustments is all!

Outstanding post, lvocd. Perfect example of how to critique the team's efforts honestly and supportively without belittling our players. Not overlooking the obvious areas that require a lot of work while doing so in an encouraging, positive way.

Agree 100% that we'd really be hurting without Lou. She's taken more charges than the rest of the team combined...despite coming back from eerious injuries. And the charges she took last night (which could easily have been three since one wasn't called) could be added to her steals, especially since they meant empty possessions for UCONN. She displays the mental and physical toughness we need although she sometimes paases up open looks.

Also agree that Jordan and Rae can correct the mental errors, just no one knows how soon.

Hope this isn't too brutal but KK does not need to be the first off the bench.....This girl is not a division one ball player...She has zero offensive skills, none.

Also, it just shows you that McDonalds All Americans can sometimes be overated.

Yes that was a foul but the shot on that I believe Williams was shooting a layup and got hammered no foul either we got the ball. 2 fouls missed we got the ball play on.
I saw the same thing. The ref was right there and I think she missed the foul on Williams and then didn't call the obvious foul that Nelson-Odota committed as a make up.

THE WAY KK AND KAM ARE PLAYING IS PITIFUL. FIRST OF ALL, KAM SHOULD NEVER BE PLAYING THE WING, AND UNTIL KK GETS IN SHAPE SHE SHOULD NEVER SEE THE FLOOR. MCCOY HAS LOST WEIGHT AND PLAYED BETTER. SHE AND SAUNDERS SHE BE GETTING KAM AND KK MINUTES. THE LADY VOLS HAVE SEVERAL PROBLEMS. NO DEPTH, POOR POST PLAY, POOR BALL MOVEMENT, AND THIS TEAM HAS TOO MANY PLAYERS WITH LOW BB IQS. LOBO COMMENTED ON THE LV LACK OF BALL MOVEMENT, AND MOTION ON OFFENSE COMPARED TO U CON OFFENSE. ALSO HOW THE UCON POST PLAYERS CATCH THE BALL AND MAKE OFFENSIVE MOVES WHILE KEY AND KK JUST CATCH THE BALL AND THROW IT AT THE RIM. KH SHOULD BE AT JR COLLEGE GAMES LOOKING FOR POST PLAYERS AND WINGS. ISABELLA HARRISON IS THE LAST PLAYER TN DEVELOPED FROM HERE FR. SESSON TO HER SR. SEASON. AND THERE HAVE BEEN HIGHLY RATED PLAYERS SIGNED DURING THESE YEARS. THE COACHING STAFF HAS TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. IF NOT THIS PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE TO REGRESS.

We'll send someone over to fix your Caps Lock key.

Crystal is also 5’5. It’s hard to find a 6’0 pg who is going to be that fast. There are pluses and minuses with big and small guards. Gotta take the good with the bad.

This was CHW's biggest loss and UT's next biggest recruiting faux pas, behind Maya Moore's
Coincidentally both went to the connies

If Burrell starts and plays more she will be in foul trouble and out turnovers will increase. She is not consistent. Maybe it will come as she matures.
If someone could get the hyper out of Burrell she would be about as good as Davis. Davis may be a little to calm so we need to take half of that Burrell hyer and give it to Davis and we got two awesome players.

UConn's not very good this year. We're a bubble team and this should've been over 10 minutes into the game. They've really fallen off this season.
First half is the way Uconn has played all year. They have been lazy, shooting poorly and playing to much one on one. The second half was the first time all year they played like this. Uconn teams usually play that hard all the time.

I see your point but when the game became high pressured track meet the 6 players UCONN was moving in and out put us at a liability on both sides of the floor. You can zone because they were beating our bigs down the floor and man to man there was no one out posts could run with. Again maybe play more people but our choices at Post are slow.
Emily Saunders is part of the team. I've seen her perform. She's a big body that catches the ball and scores in the post at will. The Huskies would had fouled her trying to stop her. If Saunders had played maybe the outcome would had been different. And she can run I've seen her.
A missed opportunity with her and Jaiden McCoy.
