Game Thread: #23/24 TENNESSEE VS. #1/1 STANFORD

Frankly, we have no idea how bright (or not) our Lady Vols are. I like to think we have more smart kids on the team than not, but I’m afraid that there HAVE, over the years, been a few who may not have been the brightest bulbs in the chandelier. Great athletes and super sweet human beings? Heck yeah! But maybe a little short of being intellectually impressive? Yeah... there have been a few.

Stanford has an low acceptance rate of 4.7, which means only the best students in the world can go there. To even be eligible to receive an offer from Stanford, students have to jump through so many hoops as they weed out the riff-raff that most don’t even want to go to all the trouble. And those who do have to walk in there with near-perfect GPAs and ACT/SAT scores that leave zero doubt as to whether or not they are bright.

I love the University of Tennessee more than any other on this planet. But I don’t try to kid myself into believing that every one of the players (including this year’s squad) who’ve worn the orange are brainiacs. Many, many Lady Vols HAVE been brainiacs, of course! But others? Not so much. And that’s okay!

Next subject...

More notes after a second viewing of the first half.:

#4 Fingall: rarely leaves the paint on D, so whoever is one her has to shoot the 3 to pull her out of the paint...Uses pump fakes effectively when under the basket ala Hakeem

#30 Haley: is what Rae Burrell would be as a starter...Can be beaten off the dribble with a good first step,,,opts for the stopNpop over finishing at the hoop...had 5 assists int he 1st half...Body up early on her and play her physical. Closing out on her with the pelvis on any dribble pickup...Has to play well early or she can disappear...

#5 Francesca B: their 6th man and a good one,,,Set blindside traps on her when she gets the ball at the elbow. Goggles take away peripheral vision and coming up on her blindside she can't see you coming

#12 Lexie: The most opportunist stealer on the team. Takes the ball on blindsides and by hitting the passing lane at the right time....Will fall for the pump fake when passing

#33 Hannah Jump...Wears 33 for a reason. Know this

#23 Kiana...speed guard who is also very savvy in her timing. Though she has the speed and quickness to attack the layup every time, she has the IQ of knowing when not to do so and uses the penetrate and dish to perfection

The team
  • Goes for about 2-3 drop passes to a cutting player per quarter. This is their bread and butter
  • Use setup moves, as they react to ball movement and if you use setup moves (Ballswings, pumpfakes, etc) effectively, you can get them off balance
  • They turn it over the same way we do...high risk passes and unsuspecting pass recipients...Turnovers will determine this game!
  • Blindside takeaways and Lazy (floating) passes are their strengths as far as opportunistic steals
  • The defense rarely sets up outside of the arc..we will have to take 2-3 3's in the first 5 possessions to extend their defense
  • Like any team that plays cutter basketball on offense like they do, they also have that mentality when playing defense, so any attack or shot will be met with immediate movement towards the basket from them when they are on defense,,,so looking for the someone coming in and boxing out has to take precedence over just using athleticism to outjump them
  • Their defense swarms any pass to, or drive to the basket, so dishes and kickouts are going to be there
  • Baseline defenders for us will have the hardest task because they not only have to play the BL shooters tight, they have to move fast to be help-defense on Stanford's drive

I don't think he meant it to be. It definitely could have done without the Jeopardy part.

How intelligent a person is depends on their surroundings the conversation at hand and their past life experiences. You could have 20 surgeons standing there and only one mechanic of the 21 only one could do a brake job. So who's the smarter person in that scenario?
Not necessarily smarter just more knowledgeably about one particular thing.

"Ok doc...since you can't do brakes, rotate and balance the tires please and throw in an alignment,,, after you tune it up,,,oh and the ABS is acting up, can you look into that?...And doc, can you make me a German Chocolate cake too?

You are confusing knowledge with intelligence.

I think that discussion is usually called nature versus nurture. You have a hard time admitting when you are wrong it seems.

True that is the oft used terms, Nature versus Nurture...
Nature vs. Nurture

Semantics!.

Nature vs. Nurture

The nature vs. nurture debate is the scientific, cultural, and philosophical debate about whether human culture, behavior, and personality are caused primarily by nature or nurture.

Nature is often defined in this debate as genetic or hormone-based behaviors, traits, and dispositions, while nurture is most commonly defined as environment, culture, and experience.///

Yes, environment is part of a triad including culture and experiences which defines nurture. So to say the discussion is nature versus environment is wrong as nurture includes the other two components. I'm still waiting for you to admit you were wrong on your understanding of intelligence.

I will consult Eliza Doolittle about this....

Have a nice day Coach. Just getting your mind off basketball for a few minutes. Enjoy you insightful comments on all things basketball and Lady Vols. Go LVs.

no problem Creek...I do enjoy a good joust every now and then...and you're right, admitting I am wrong is not something I find easy, but I continually work on it.

Almost game time....

Hard for me also. My mother used to tell me I'd argue with a fence post.

can't admit you are wrong? You are the name caller, acting like you are in 3rd grade. I simple turned your "dumb as rock "comment back on you. Why you felt need to call me dumb, when you were too ignorant to understand post, that is all on you. Rude Glue

At least I passed 3rd grade. And, I didn't have any trouble understanding what Coach j was trying to say about giving more than 100% . You think you have given your best but then you find the will to do more! That's how records are broken. Some coaches are better at getting you to make that effort.
