Game Thread: (25) Lady Vols vs. (13) Kentucky

Tomorrow is a gut check game for this team. They can silence a lot of critics with a solid victory.

Keys to the game defensively IMO we have to hold Howard to around 20. She’s going to score some, she’s just too good. Have to avoid fouling her as much as possible, she has killed us at the line in the past. Other big objective is to not allow the “others” to beat us. We have to play solid, team defense. Blair Green, Edwards or McKinney can’t have a big night against us. We can give up a few to Howard but we have to make it tough on everyone else.

Posts are going to have to be ready to step out on the 3. Can’t just sprint straight to the paint either, have to get matched up at half court. McKinney and Edwards both will bust a transition 3 from the top of the key.

Welcome home Kyra Elzy, one of my fave all time LVs. She was the consummate role player, a defensive specialist who played hurt alot as I remember. She and Kellie played together for several wonderful, glorious, undefeated Natty years. The LVs were Rock Stars back then.

Should be a good game, would be a very nice win for us.

I don’t know if that is exactly true.. the wins against Arkansas, Indiana, and Bama weren’t ugly and all look to be NCAA teams as of now.

In the only comparative game, DePaul beat Kentucky 86-82 and UConn beat DePaul 75-52.

I think if we look objectively at individual talent they have a better roster. If we look at team basketball and defense I give the edge to us this season. Something I absolutely would not have said a season ago.

Kentucky has not been rebounding the ball well. Only a +4 margin on the boards. If we attack the glass like we did against Arkansas, Bama and UCONN (for 3 quarters) we will be in great shape. If we play passive, stand and hold the ball, and make poor passes. We will watch them shoot transition layups all afternoon and we’ll never get enough shots off to get any oboards.

Patterson has the quickest hands in the SEC. If you stand and hold the ball in front of you she’ll have it poked loose before you even know what happened. Rae and JH were the biggest offenders in the UGA game. Expecting some better ball control from them tonight.

Expecting a lot of things from JH today actually. Hope she comes to play. She’s got to turn her poor performances into fuel, not more fodder for the fan fire on here.

If the TN team that showed up against UConn shows up again today, I think we win by 8-10. Really hoping to see the team come out with a competitive chip on their shoulder.
