Game Thread: #25/RV LADY VOLS VS. #16/18 TEXAS A&M

Key is not a good offensive player. She's tall and presents matchup problems because of her size. But she came into college with no reliable post moves, and probably won't have them until an off-season of hard work.

Horston has her bright moments. She clearly has some talent, but has very low bball IQ. Kellie needs to keep her off the ball. Massengill should be playing big minutes running the floor, with maybe Jessie providing a few minutes to give her a breather. Next year will answer the question about Kellie's player development skills.

You are correct about Key but there is not one coach on that staff that can teach her ?

You make too much sense. Just listen to half the jack wagons in here. They know everything. Clueless to the situation but they know everything.

Heh, yeah. I hear ya. I think a lot of folks greatly undervalue stability. I cannot cannot _cannot_ understate the value of having a bench which can do its job and even exceed expectations. Tennessee's roster has put its freshmen and sophomores on an island all year because there just isn't much behind them which can keep up. So that means you roll 'em out there, take the good and the bad in real time, and do your best.

And stability isn't just about the head coach either, or even just the coaching staff; stability comprises everything involved with the program. The managers, the support staff, the media, the athletic department, and definitely the fans -- all that energy leaks through and can influence so much about these very real young humans and their very real day to day lives. When things are stable, you can take hits and recover. You can have missteps. Hell you can have a 10 loss season and then flip the switch. That last part's pretty important. A stable program promotes trust and helps people focus on doing what they're there to do, to the best of their ability. But the Lady Vols ... it's like the whole program, from the fans to the press, are perched on a wound up spring of expectations which magnifies mistakes and dismisses success right now. "Final Four or bust." Well great, but what if you aren't built to get there yet? Do you knock the whole thing over with every failure? Do you wait? A wound up spring of expectations. I have no idea how much that influences what happens internally but I can't imagine that stability is built in a day. Or a season.

Probably have to blame Bruce a little for the attitude. Guy steps into a moribund Vols program and kicks it into fourth gear in a single season, which makes everyone go "oh see it can be done." I mean, sure, if you have one of the best pure shooters in college basketball history, I guess so. Among other positives you can find when comparing the two sports. Oh well.

Key is actually an excellent defensive player. She just doesn’t have the offensive game yet. She has to get meaner on the boards. I would NEVER call her awful though. She is far and away our best post presence sadly.
I just don’t get why we continue to try and force the ball inside to her.

20 wins is a good possibility. I am looking forward to next year and I will be very disappointed if the LVs do not win a minimum of 25 games during the regular season and reach at least the elite 8 in the NCAA tournament.

So, basically, you're looking forward to Zaay Green coming back 100%? :)

Did anybody notice Key setting up half way up the paint to try and receive a pass? I call that no man's land for a post move or a high low move. Perhaps, she was trying to find room in the 2-3 defense.

Don't you have to subtract the foul shots made to get an accurate ratio based on shots taken?
No the foul shots are part of it total points scored versus total shots taken. Player bring able to get to the line is part of their efficiency.

All the posts referencing a “good loss” at LSU should be revisited. They lost to Auburn.

They are an average team—not a good one.

it wasn't a good loss was the worst loss of the season no reason not to win that game. They are not that great without Mitchell. They may lose 7 SEC games and they only have 4 left.

This team lose any post players that return it will be vary hard for KJH to turn this program around.

At an interview today, Kellie said they don't teach the girls how to block shots......One of their major advantages is their height/length, but Kellie has no interest in teaching shot blocking techniques that might prevent a foul, or stopping the winning points from being scored........

I wish she had not said that...

You have players who can't catch. Players who can't pass. Players who can't shoot free throws. You're instituting a new system with a new coaching staff. So lets spend some time on shot blocking. Good Plan!

Correct 10th ranked post player. But was actually 47th ranked. But still a 5 star

By ESPN/Hoopgurlz.

Key 47 and Burrell 44 there and both 5 stars.

Prospects Nation had a slightly different take.

Key 50 and Burrell 119. Both 4 stars.

Obviously, both have loads of talent/potential, but different services regarded then differently. So it depends upon whom you're talking to as to whether TN had five "five stars" on the floor.

Bla bla bla. This lose isn’t on her.
She sure didn't do the team any favors today with in game coachimg, lack of stopping wrong defense late, and players letting time run without fouling. Staff maybe working on passing issues but I don't remember one force turnover, but lots of the same broadcasted, and just lack of any skill trained passing. End of third quarter pass, Key cross court over everyones head, another cross court over Rae, pass to Horston's ankle in lane. If they work on passing, than they are just bad coaching, as it hasnt gotten better, maybe worse, these ladies have talent. Coaches lost this game with season long correctable errors still not improved, but worse, lack of clock control and communicating down the stretch. No excuse team does not know to press, or foul, except in game by coaching. Kellie saw them not pressing and instead of using a timeout, she let it go. Do your job Kellie!. Love Kellie but she was our downfall today. Hope she realises it

I think when they evaluated Horston and Key they saw players that were dominating physically in high school and didn't need much IQ or intensity to get it done. Neither are very good shooters but it doesn't take a lot to average over 20 when your shooting over 100 pounds 5'6" girls. At this level you have to be a lot smarter, much more physical, and have some shooting ability. Both are not there at this level yet.
And that's why the star system sucks. You mean they fail to take level of h.s. competition into account when they award stars? We know it makes a difference, we talk about it here all the time. So how could ratings services and college recruiters continue to get fooled by it? Makes no sense. Actually, we've heard there's alot of politics and money surrounding some of those rankings. Stars reliably predict potential but not how or if potential becomes effective productive talent.
I think Horston’s issues right now are all mental..
Me too, unfortunately, because mental is the hardest to fix. I'm not sure her passes are lazy, even though my Granny could intercept them. I think she's overthinking them, being too careful, too tenative. Her penchant for turnovers has become a big presence now and she's obviously aware of it. Classic case of the sports yips, she's the allstar second bassman who can no longer make the short throw to first. You can see she's terrified everytime the ball leaves her hand, as am I, and for good reason.

This is going to be a major offseason challenge to fix. Here's my advice: don't do whatever Holly did when Evina was in the exact same spot. Do whatever somebody did for Jazz this last offseason when she was in the exact same spot.
