Game Thread - (5) Lady Vols vs (12) USF Bulls

S Florida looks to run 6 to 7 deep. Guard the three and run them down. They seem to be a streaky shooting team as well. If they get hot or we start slow could be trouble. I'm sure they are working on breaking the press down already.
I could be wrong but the press seems to wear us down as much as the other team.

Does against good teams. Not sure this team we're playing qualifies for that.

Over the long haul of the season, CKC says it has worn her team down.
Yep, over the season playing in a conference where you have to bring it every game. I think even Caldwell realizes this was very taxing on the team running that SEC+ UConn thrown into gauntlet stretch. I think this led to the UGA loss. I'm not going to say it just means more but the SEC is different than Marshall or Glenville State navigating those conference which IMO are not as deep team wise where you can probably take some plays off and still be effective. I feel next year CKC will make some minor adjustments to avoid the end of year burn out.

A Look at the USF Bulls

They look like they only go 7 deep and are guard oriented. Full disclosure, I have not watched them play this season.

Kim said all of this. Said it was an adjustment she’d make next year.

I suspect excessive wear and tear is one of the reasons more teams don’t play like this. And also why pro teams don’t

There is some irony in how this season unfolded. Recently, CKC said the team looks more like it did in December and is ready to go for the NCAA. But as we recall, December was supposed to be the time when her teams would be struggling to learn the system.

I think this entire season has been CKC learning the difference between D2 and marginal level D1 players and higher caliber players, who are not only more physically talented but have a better understanding of the game (and hence faster learning curves).

I wonder where this team might have been had CKC not played this inefficient, high exertion defensive system. Spencer is the best PG the program has had in years and her coupled with Cooper, Spears, Whitehorn, and Boyd (a bit a of pleasant surprise) makes for a pretty solid backcourt.

Spearman's development has given a little more punch to the front court.

I am hoping to see a wiser version of CKC in the tournament. There is no reason not to make these adjustments in this break period. I think this team has the potential to get to the S16 and even the elite 8. But, if the game plan is to have this more rested team keep playing a kamikazee style of defense, the run probably ends with OSU in the round of 32.

I believe we'll win big. If not, something went really wrong in late Feb.

They have Mama Demble who played at Missouri last yr. A good guard but not nearly enough for them

We best not go against South Florida thinking we got this in the bag. We need to play them like they are a 1 seed. We can’t be throwing up crazy shots and making stupid mistakes. This is a veteran team that play the game very seriously. We have to keep our feet down on the petal and play and take nothing for granted.

trivia: south florida has 12 players not from the United States - and from ten different countries. I can't imagine coaching with so many having not only English as a second language and their experience in different basketball and life cultures. (probably even more crucial that driving thru different time zones!)

UT just went elite mode with the Oakley sunglasses from LVFL Diamond DeShields!

Man all the Vol family focused being squarely on this new Coach Caldwell era and nothing else is going cray cray!
The support and love is insane!

I don’t think many folks saw this coming.
Let CKC and AD Danny White cook!
S/O Diamond DeShields she GBO ‘solid’!

🫤 I once passed through 3 different local time zones driving in Indiana. I wasn't driving that slow, nor was I quantumly entangled.

Note: There are areas of Alabama that scientists say run 15-20 minutes behind.

I have an enlightened friend from Alabama who says the entire state is decades behind
what most of us think of as reality.

And, long haul truckers have said the prettiest girls are from Dothan. 🤔

...which kinda begs the question (seeing as there are only a few venues in which a long haul trucker would have opportunity to assess a sample of the local talent) were they referring to waitresses from Dothan, or truck stop angels?

And speaking of truckers... how far off course have we diverted from the thread topic?

I've taught in classrooms where the diversity (of ability as well as background) was as broad as that, and they were actually the most successful classes because the only thing they had in common was the main thing.

Focusing solely on our purpose for being there (rather than "celebrating our diversity") created the oneness that eventually (and later) allowed the diversity to be appreciated.

I am not going to predict a score .....because if this LV team plays like it did the last two weeks of the season they will lose. If they play like they did the 1st 3 weeks of January ,they will win but by a close margin.
