Game Thread: Kentucky at Lady Vols: Sun Jan 7, 12 p.m.; SEC Network,,,,Win 87-69

Kaiya shutting down Scherr was huge today,,,Mattie was killing us. Once she was corrraled the KY offense sputtered,,,Kudos to Kaiya

You got to see the "dog" in Miles though,,,she is a pit bull on D

Started coaching females in 1982 and have stayed exclusive to them due to a conversation with a legend,,Sitting with Pat during the 1996 SEC Women's tourney when she was scouting ALA,,,she said.."Girls get uncles, dads and brothers...they don't get real coaches"...That influenced me to become a real coach and to stay with the female gender...And,, I wouldn't trade a day with the girls for a year with the boys... ;o)

I admit, I did watch the men's game yesterday though,,,it was entertaining...They deserve their ranking.

Tess was more than just "not a liability" today,,,she was an asset. the Best overall game by her I have ever seen her play. Dotted multiple stats, scored more from mid-range than from the arc, 2 reb, 3 asst and 3 steals,,no fouls no TO's excellent game for her

Jillian played a good all around effort on defense particularly...When TK had to rest, Jillian bothered their post like Dennis Rodman,,she was all over Petty in the paint

this /\
Like that talks in games. But when the ball is in play .
Tess should guard her man first then talk . She can play better defense if she less giving . Instructions and guard her man first.

The Lady Vols have returned to being a team to be reckoned with. If they continue playing like they're capable of they could go very far this season.

There is no reason we should keep having to play from behind. If Tamari can play 20+ minutes in a game there is no reason she shouldn’t be starting. I could get it when she was only able to play about 7-10 but that’s not where we are anymore. She’s shown she’s continuing to return to form. By February this team should be CLICKINGGGGGG but only if you play the lineups that actually work.

People get on Jillian but she has been rebounding her butt off and had a nice jumper today. Yet.. I see nothing about how poorly Sara defends, and Karo ain’t too far off either

I agree. Don’t know what Sarah Puckett adds at this point. Starting Tess is better. Starting Wynn may be a lot better. What does a player need to do to dislodge Puckett from the starting lineup? Maybe she has a little more fire if she’s not handed the starting spot.

swapping 5 for 5 at the media timeout in the first quarter is a head scratcher.

Starting any group but your top 5 against any opponent, Maybe 4 if it really helps the second unit, is a big head scratcher.

Not adjusting your lineup for best matchups against your opponent is questionable as well.

The game has gone to faster, quicker, more explosive players 1-4 and maybe even 5. Even Kyra Elzy seems to have gone to this model. Cuz that’s what wins. With Key coming along LVs are gonna need their very best perimeter defenders to get over screens to not expose Key’s mobility. They showed it today to some extent. KY was trying to expose Key in the pick and roll game, but the right support was in the game with her. Cmon Kelly, figure it out.

Ugh, I should just stop, but with the winning lineup in, I saw a ton more movement on defense with some really great help. It just seems so obvious that changes need to be made.

Sending a cryptic to the board, just wanted to establish position of no silence. But nice game by Key and her size to take over. Kellie doesn’t get credit for god given size.
No credit for Kellie getting Jackson and Spear to rocky top. Just want to say all had good games today.hold on Key the last Hollie recruit. Like dog chewing on its favorite bone. .
Powell had good game to. Maybe not as good as Three I just said. Tess and Karoline didn't look bad.
Nor was Wynn and Jillian.
Sara played hard to.
We all know your take on Kellie.

Yep, that one sure aged well!!!
And we still have posters who are in denial and say things like I have to watch the game to see what adjustments were made if any. List to KJH postgame and she says exactly what adjustments were made. Her statements match what we all saw on court the last two games. I guess it is easier to be in denial about our coach making adjustments by acting like there is not a coach talking about her adjustments 🙂.

I will wait until I watch this game a second time, without emotion to make this decision..
Changes happened and were made,,,but not sure who/when
Things get clearer when no emotion is involved
Take notes if you speak about some thing in the wrong quarter. I seen where mistake Jackson to Tess second instead third-quarter
Should say something . When some us were chatting the other day. I seen it just didn't say something. Anyway someone always point out others mistake..We all do that sometimes.

I went through a read comments from the 1st half. LOL!!!

I have really got to ask. Does the "where down double digits and will never win another game-fire Kellie NOW!" crowd ever watch basketball? It happens all the time that one team gets out to a fast start and then the opponent goes on a counter run to get back in the game. It is the ebbs and the flows of basketball.

Why do some teams start hot and finish cold and vice versa has no easy explanation. However, the KY lead was a little bit of fools gold because they had a hot run from three point line but are not a good 3 pt shooting. They were bound to cool off.

But turning a 17 point deficit into an 18 point is a significant turnaround.

2nd half adjustments seemed to be more about effort and focusing more on boxing out. Once KY stopped beating us to the 2nd chance balls, their game plan turned to dust. Also, the LVs starting finding gaps that were created by KY over pressuring.

It sounds good-- we are an athletic team and we are going to press you into submission. But that is generally not a sustainable model--a little fatigue sets in and your toast.

The resurgence of Key continues. Again changing the game with her defensive presence. She had six blocks and intimidated about 10 shots. A few times Ky got into the lane, saw Key and did a roadrunner reverse out-a-there. She only played 15:39 but her +- was 22!

Her reflexes still are not quite there. She is a little slow when it comes to attacking rebounds but she is moving better every game. We might be only a few games away from her being close 100%. That is so cool to see.

Spear stepped up!! She was needed against KY speed attack and she delivered. I also noticed that on many possessions she became the de facto point guard with Wynn playing off the ball. She looks more comfortable with the ball in her hand. I think we are going to see a transition in that # 2 PG role coming.

Powell's improved 2nd half play really helped the cause!!.

So, Tess is not supposed to make plays against athletic teams like this. I guess she did not get the memo. Very solid on both ends.

Jillian - 7 boards, 3 assists and really helped to break the press. Excellent work.

In relative terms, 16 TOs against KY is not too bad and most of those came in the 1st half. the 2nd half TOs were going for quick transition buckets and you have to live with those.

Rickea is so amazing that we can say her 27 pt. outing was bit of an off day. Only 7 rebounds with 7 TOs is below her standard.

One cautionary note- 4-17 from 3. That % has to go up.

I reviewed up until the game started, then worked my way back to the end of the game. Actually plugged in and watched, avoiding the live GT. I enjoy the game so much more that way.
Oh my word,. I can't imagine watching the game and following the comments on this board in real time. As Sartre famously said, "hell is other people".

I wonder how fouls play into delaying Key entering the game? Refs pick on the big girls and 2 quick fouls on Key in Q1 could really be a problem late in the game.

It's good we make halftime adjustments because we have to: We play a decent opponent and almost always fall behind.

The real question is how did we fall behind--by 17, apparently--to such a bad basketball team. Kentucky lost to Austin Pea, lost to NC State by
30, lost to Colorado by 43 points, lost to Cincinnati by 24 points (scoring 41), lost to Minnesota by 19 points. The Cats did manage to beat BC and Arkansas.

Clearly, our second half defense was the difference.

If listen to Rickea Jackson interview she gave Kellie credit. Players would have better first hand account did coach make good adjustmentsif the coach help or not.
