Game Thread Lady Vol vs Stetson

From reading the posts here, I would have expected another night scoring in the 50's. Regardless of who they played, to score 90 is a marked improvement that should help their confidence.

Couldn't pick the game up on WNML or the post game on the lady vol station. Anybody else have that problem?

Team had 17 turnovers Cooper with six of those. She also had six assists.

Stetson Hatters vs. Tennessee Lady Vols - Box Score - December 30, 2015 - ESPN

IMO Cooper is still the long-term answer at PG. Compare her stats with those of Carter, Reynolds, Middleton, and Jackson. None of the others have near the potential impact on the game she does. Even Middleton has a better stat line than Carter and Reynolds.

If Cooper can get her decision-making under control this will be a much better team.

If...

If she could keep her passes subsonic, her targets would have a much better chance of catching it. I did see some improvement in her decision making this game but i did not watch all of it….maybe half.

If they had played UCONN tonite this would have been impressive.Anxious to see the next game.Alittle more continuity offensively. If they will run the offense thru Deshields on every possession then they will have a chance to improve offensively .Center is still playing soft like a very ripe peach....they need to run her thru some toughening up drills.Cooper has played long enough now to stop acting like a high school sophomore.Holly was a point guard so why isn't she coaching Cooper up ?

Baylor loses first game of the season to Oklahoma state 45-52

Niya Johnson did not play for Baylor but still...OSU is unranked. We'll see how far the pollsters drop Baylor. The seeding committee has been historically hard on highly-ranked teams losing to unranked ones.

Did you see the box score? OSU scored 6 points and Baylor 2 points in the 2nd qtr! And I complain about the LV's offense!

Coop had 6 turnovers, mostly by forced inside passes.......Most of the turnovers are forcing the ball inside....Against a small team like Stetson, the inside play was the preferred rout. But against a team with any height and we are back to 20 or more turnovers a game..

WE needed a team like this to stretch the legs.

Amazing how bad Baylor's offense looks without Johnson

In any event, I don't think Baylor should be punished too much. Johnson is the best pure playmaker in the game, and she makes that team run. Plus, OK State has only lost once this season.

Just watched the replay. While DD certainly had the hot hand tonight, her defense was about the worst I've seen from any Tenn player in recent memory. Lazy, lazy, lazy. Most of Saunders' points were scored against DD. Cooper needs to get under control. Right now she's a TO machine. This team would do better with Middleton at the point and Cooper as SG. Middleton has a higher BB IQ and better court vision. Nared is coming along. Our ball movement was better with more passing and less dribbling, but why aren't we finding Graves? She took 3 shots in 19 mins. And why does it take 4 years for our centers to learn not to bring the ball down? Doesn't Lockwood know the drills for that?

A win is a win, and this should be a confidence builder, but we've still got some of the same old problems, incl 3-pt shooting.

I had a chance to get back to K-town and see the game live. A few impressions:

I hope this game was an aberration but the crowd was quite passive.

It was fun to see Diamond do her thing live and to see her mid range working so well.

Stetson was so physically overmatched that I don't think much can be learned from this game in terms of how the LVs will do against SEC competition.

But, it seems that some of the ongoing problems were still present but Stetson was not capable of taking any real advantage of them.

LVs were often very stagnant in their offensive sets and too slow in initiating the offense. There best plays were putting Diamond in isolation.

Cooper still likes to drive into double or triple coverage with the goal of getting to the rim (rather than passing to an open player). She got several times in this game. I realized that the LVs lack of movement often does not leave her many options.

Stetson broke the LVs press time and time again and the LVs gave up many lay-ups from dribble penetration. And this was Stetson.

Given her size advantage, Mercedes did not impact the game in the way she should have.

I hate to sound like Debbie Downer but I came away with more concerns from this game than I had going in. The big plus is that Diamond seems to be finding her groove. But, there are still many components of the game that this team needs to make substantial improvement on and fast.

Yes. Yes, I would like to see Meme and Middleton to start digging into Carter and Reynolds minutes.

Yes, all five positions need to be able to defend and make the other team pay and score, ladies if you take 10 less threes, and attack the rim or midrange jumper that's 10 more points if your shooting 50%. I'm just sayin', keep the focus on playing hard on both sides of the ball, but let's focus on playing smart too.

Diamond be careful what you show us cos we are fans, and we remember all performances.

We're getting better, still like us to be a lil more physical, especially, Graves and Russell running more action together in the paint, they have to set more back screens etc. Mercedes, acts like a mercedes, lets nickname or call her Hummer. We are pretty soft in the paint.

Carter and Reynolds ain't the answer at Point Guard, they could be if Graves provided more production. She has to get her touches from offensive rebounds. She has to get on the glass. She should be averaging 5 offensive rebounds, Russell too, see how easy more touches are...10 more shot attempts, you shoot 60%, that's 12 more points. The game is simple, work harder ladies.

If Cooper game can sometimes be a facilitator without the turnovers, she'll be dynamic, a point guard sometimes has to understand some games you have to be quiet too, seems like she's more fitted for the 2 as of right now.

I do not like Graves disappearing in games her senior year.

Welp 9-3. Hmmm! Now, we build, the great thing about familiar foes, they know your game, our league should prepare us nicely cos not bringing yo A or B game each night could be a lost. Let's Go Lady Vols.

Now the questions remains, can the SEC have two No.1 seeds. The answer is no, and most of the teams that are good in our league guard play is getting solid.

Right now, NCAA seeding is on the line, I hope our ladies understand that. Here's to 14-0 or 13-1!

Frankly, I hope they don't get a number 1 seed. I'm sick and tired of seeing them getting number one seeds, then getting beat in the tournament like a rented mule by a two or three seed. I'm ready for them to be a two or three seed and sneak up on somebody.

You nor anyone else will have to fret over a #1 seed by this team....it ain't gonna happen.A number 2 seed also is out of reach.A # 4 seed is possible.

The team had 66 shots in this game.

Through 12 games, they are averaging less than 62 shots per game. At 45% this equals 56 points. This percentage is total, both 2 and 3 point shots.

The team is averaging 3.75 made three-pointers per game. Rounding up this is an extra 4 points per game added to 56 equals 60 points.

The team is averaging 9.75 made free throws per game. Rounding up to 10 this adds 10 points per game to 60 equals 70 points per game.

There is now way around it - the team has to find a way to generate more shots, shoot a higher percentage, get to the free throw line more, and make at least one or two more three point shots a game, in order to score in the 70's consistently.

Fire Holly mantra would be at full steam ahead. lol

Yeah, right now we are looking like a #2 or #3 seed, I think there are some other playing better ball but most of those teams are hitting their peak, they can't get too much better; as for our ladies, sky is the limit. So that keeps me excited.

Guard play and toughness in the paint.

Attacking the rim solves alot of those woes, cos they are higher percentage shots, they can potentially be an And 1, we should average right now, maybe 3 8-10 threes a game.

And hitting the glass, see for me Russell or Graves not getting a double double is being lazy to me, they both should be All American or All SEC performers. One of them have to get a double double each game or both players.

Offensive rebounds are more shot attempts, but long threes, doesn't help, 21 which could be 8 more touches for your posts, we have to find ways to keep Graves and Russell engaged early and attacking the rim does that, now a defender has to be engaged on you offensively, cos they are the first line of defense, and in man defense any time a player has to help, someone is open.

Now, hopefully Diamond is asserting herself as alpha female, and we can start to see a better effort and play from more players.

And if we turned the ball over less, 10-12 a game, that's more possession.

All the things, Holly has been talking about like quick shooting the basketball, which is essentially a turnover, we have to value possessions more.

If our defense get better and rebound the basket, we can get away with not averaging 70 points, cos I don't see any teams lightening up but Uconn.

We need to value the basketball and possessions more...

hey Jeff you be nice to mules :hi:

I watched the game on a replay and it went pretty much as one would expect

DeShields got off to a hot start and we can see why everybody wanted her as a Freshmen

I would have liked to see them get Dunbar some more shots at the 3 point range

it was great to see Middleton back and playing good

they did say Jones did some warms up exercises for a change, but still hasn't practiced with the team, has anybody heard about a date that she might be back ?

you can tell that Nared needs a lot more playing time to knock the rust off,she will get better as the SEC schedule kicks in

it looked like Brittany Jackson got her moneys worth for the surgery :)
