Game Thread Lady Vols at Ole Miss

I was watching a UConn game a couple of weeks ago and the announcers said they watched UCONN practice the day before. They said Geno had them working on passing drills for two hours. Nothing else. That is in the middle of the season.

Don't expect that from her. Would just like to see her moving that way. I agree with a lot of the other guys that UCONN's coaching and ND's is at another level. Holly needs to get there before she can get her team there.

That's my point.....it took Geno yrs to become what he is today and it took Muffett McGraw even longer.....Muffett won a championship in 2000 and then spent the next nine seasons without making a sweet sixteen before her recent dominance....maybe u are expecting a little much from someone in their third season as head coach....she seems to grow a little more every yr to me.

geno started out playing the blind little sisters of the poor.... pretty easy wins. Holly has played as tough a schedule as anyone....

How is the rest of the SEC catching Alabama in football? By watching them and emulating them. Holly can learn a lot by watching UCONN. She needs to do it every chance she gets. She even needs to record their games and learn from them.

You don't think she's watching them? You don't think she's been watching them for years?

It's funny to me that people think Holly was handed the keys to a Ferrari, and that she should just automatically know how to drive it. How long did it take Pat and Geno to win a National Championship? To go undefeated? To win Conference Championships.

It was not two and a half years, was it? Were Summitt and Geno 37-5 in conference play after 2 and half years? Was women's basketball tougher then than it is now?

Listen, Summitt started her coaching career as a head coach, I believe. I'm not sure about Geno, but I don't think he had a lot of coaching experience before taking over UConn. Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't mean this as another complaint about Warlick--but you all realize that she was an assistant for about 30 years at UT before getting the head job!?? She's 56! If she doesn't understand NOW what it takes to push and develop players, to push and develop a team, then we've got problems.

There are coaches who are demanding, or think they are demanding, and then there are coaches like geno and PS who take what you think is a high coaching standard and demand another 20 percent from the players. That's how you keep getting better and better. Where PS dropped the ball over the years was in coaching team offense and offensive efficiency. PS and then Warlick kept the emphasis on defense and rebounding, and our offense floundered for years. Geno emphasized defense and rebounding AND--AND--offense, and with a serious focus on fundamentals. Our coaching fell behind--it's a fact. Now, I think, Warlick sort of gets that you can't average 6 assists and 17 turnovers and be a good basketball team and beat outstanding opponents. You need to flip those numbers, or close to it. We did well with assists tonight but still had 16 turnovers. In fact, I DO think Warlick is learning still. That worries me, given her experience--she should be well past the learning stage. BUT: there has been progress. I think we could be better, should be better, but the team has improved as this season has gone along. You have to improve over the course of a season--that's the idea. This is a good team and only some bad luck with injuries is keeping it from being very formidable. We may yet make some serious noise this year. Fingers crossed--and I actually hope we end up playing ND and/or UConn this year.

Well.....Geno was an assistant for 7-8 yrs before UCONn and Muffett was a head coach/assistant for 13 yrs before Notre Dame....... Right now the only two coaches that I feel holly is definitely below is Geno and Muffett.......it's a big difference between being an asst and being the head coach....I feel she can improve and seems to adapt a little every yr....As for pushing her players.....she definitely pushes them very hard.

“Right now, we’re probably getting to a cycle that a lot of coaches feared would come,” Auriemma said. “We’re coming to a cycle where if you don’t win, you’re fired. I think that’s a great thing, provided you took the job under certain circumstances, and they didn’t change the rules on you.”

To me that means, " I was given 3 years where I didn't even make the tourney, and seven years to make a final four."

Now Holly is expected to follow a legend while slaying the Giant and go undefeated. I say "who ya got that can do it?" Guy from UK? Lady at ND, Stanford...C'mon.

Strange how a blow-out SEC win on the road has turned once again into a "Holly can't coach" thread.

It would have been very easy for this program to go into a radical decline after CPS's departure and let's be honest, the program had been moving in the wrong direction since the Candace Parker years.

Holly has certainly maintained the team and I think is building a stronger one. This rendition is better than last years. And no, they are not as good as UConn but neither is ANYONE else.

Right now, Holly is coaching around her 6-6 #1 recruit player being out for the season. That kind of makes a difference. And she does not have Jannah Tucker who would have been a defensive force and a major offense threat. And no Jasmine Jones, who brought significant athleticism and defensive presence to the team.

Despite all that, the LVs are poised to be a #1 seed and remain undefeated in the toughest conference in the naton having taken the hides of KY, Texas A&M, Georgia, Vandy etc. etc. plus Rutgers and Stanford.

You know, some might say that Holly can't be doing that bad of a job.

I dont understand. Things really could b much worst. She has won a regular season and tournament title. Some people are never satisfied tho. Glad we still have a strong fan support at every game bc reading these blogs will have you thinking we don't have any support.

I think the only other thing we can ask from holly is to begin to focus on offensive development and dominating opponents with 1/4 of the talent.

I've been as dispirited as most of you as we seemingly have fallen by UConn in the last ten years. But can we realistically expect Holly to close the gap? I've come to the conclusion she can't and wont until Geno retires. He will name his number of titles--that's how much better he's been than everyone else since 2000. Winning 8 out of the last 15 is as close to a Wooden type legacy in the women's game as may be possible given the investment so many schools are making and the wide array of talent available.

A similarly great example of this is Andy Roddick who had the unfortunate luck of being in the same generation as Roger Federer, the greatest men's tennis player of all time. Andy has some flaws in his game but he had a magnificent serve and solid ground strokes. How many grand slams would he have won in another era? I'd imagine quite a few more than one.

Try as we might and as good as we are, sometimes our ambitions run head first into the brick wall of historical significance.

Actually if u look at Geno's history.....granted I know he walked into a much worse situation than Holly but it took him till season six to make a final four and season 9 to win a championship....the season before he won only 18 games.....Geno didn't become dominant until the 2000 so maybe it is unrealistic to expect that from Holly in yr 3?

Great, so she will have Tennessee back at a championship level when she's about 70 and ready to retire....

You don't think she's watching them? You don't think she's been watching them for years?

No I don't. Other than scouting a mutual opponent (like Notre Dame) I don't think she watches much UConn at all. And I certainly don't see any evidence she is trying to emulate anything they do....

This is your problem....

Your comparing Holly to Pat and Geno.

Their will NEVER be another Pat or Geno. Their will be coaches that come and maybe win a couple national championships, but the dominance won't be seen again after Geno is done.

If you are going to compare Pat and Holly then it would be fair to say Holly is a better coach right now than Pat in her first three years?
Pat after 3 years, 60-24
Holly after 2 1/2 years -77-17
So clearly Holly is better ...
Not really, you can't compare because the times, evolution of the game, blah blah blah.
Bottom line, stop comparing :)

S/O to the defense last night on Tia Faleru...from what the commentators were saying, she leads the league in FG% and double doubles this year. She had 0 points and 4 rebounds!!!!
