KK needs work but part of the problem is when she is on the block and has someone on her back she isn't getting the same touch that Russell is. They don't "Force" it into KK like they do Russell so many times when she does get a touch its on an offensive rebound or a dish to her when she's got in position to rebound.

SD also played her like they played Russell, the moment she touched the ball there were 2 to 3 defenders around her. She wont get that same attention in league play or against other Power 5 conferences.

She is a work in progress imo but 2 to 3 minutes spurts a quarter wouldn't her imo

How does KK move, compared to Russell, or generally? Is she athletic or no? Centers who are not athletic simply aren't much help. Twenty years ago, you could be OK with a big lumbering center. Not anymore. We had 20 turnovers against South Dakota---way too many.

The schedule has been easy so far, however, I remember the past few years when the Lady Vols almost gave you a heart attack playing teams they should have easily beaten. They have room for improvement, especially eliminating turnovers, better shot selection, rebounding and unnessary fouls. Hopefully all that will come as the freshmen mature. Russell needs to be more aggressive and dominating.

Mercedes is who we thought she is!!!!! She will never be aggressive!!!!! Even if you killed her family and cut her head off ! (Just Kidding) but she is sloooow moving unless she thinks she might get an uncontested lay up? (Then she runs a little bit )
Her footwork won’t allow her get help defense most of the time! She acts like she didn’t mean to touch someone when fouling. Barely shooting 50% from foul line and how many years has she been shooting them ? She said : she wanted to improve her game !

I wonder how we will play when we don’t have her inside? I guess we will find out next year!

Sorry: I just get tired of watching some 6’6” play down to the munchkins and let them push her around! Just once I would like her to foul somebody and put them into the bleachers. And go over and tell them “Don’t come in here again “ 😈

She is capable of so much more..,. But alas.. she is what she is!!!!!

It gets down to coaching and the demand for excellence. A good coach works with your footwork and teach you how to place yourself in the right position for rebounds. There is not a good reason why Russell should not rule the boards. However, every now and then she shows her potential. Holly seems to be satisfied as is.

For 4 years she has been running heel to toe when she should be running on the toes and balls of her feet. For her size she is not that good in the paint.

KK moves well for a post player. She’s definitely more active on the boards than Russell. I’m watching the replay and she got in the game with us up 15 and was able to get an ofefensuve rebound. On some plays when she couldn’t corral the ball, she was able to swat it in the direction of a teammate.

I think she’s very athletic and will get better in time.

Think about this on our cupcake run too....In every game we have been challenged with their best game for of all 40 minutes....While the Connies get the best of what their "ranked" opponents can give until uconn makes a run, then their opponents punch out and take the rest of the game off.,,,While we are getting more of a battle test.

That will come into to play, the deeper both teams are tested down the line

An observation and a question.
We scored 50 points in the second half of the ETSU game after scoring 37 in the first half. Doesn't sound like they (ETSU) gave their best effort "for all of 40 minutes"
Why is "ranked" in quotation marks in your original post regarding UConn's opponents ? Do you think that they should not be ranked ?

We may have had one team to quit...I've seen 3 uconn games (they're the only wcbb on the tube right now). Their ranked opponents give up when the span gets to 12+...15 or more and no fight at all.

This is a different UT team. They continue to fight and the don't let loose of the team they're pounding. Teams, and posters, who think this is last year's team or staff are mistaking.

Perfect storm time.

Because of her size people want her to be a brut. That is not her nature. Granted, yes, sometimes a technical can be very unexpected bonus, but that is dependant on the makeup and overall culture of the team. For example a techinical for a team like South Carlina that likes to kind of mix it up, do some taunting, and what not, with a fiery coach who is gonna back the player even if they were in the wrong, can be a catalyst for a run. For Tennessee a tech is more likely to deject the team and not fire them up. In the case of MR it'll never happen.

What some fans really want is for her to own the paint and claim it as her domain. As it stands she is extremely consistent offensively (except for free throws) but defensively the staff often has her much futher away from the basket for whatever reason. That has been the way it always is so expecting her to be a dominant rim protector is silly because if you have been watching them play the past few years you would realize that's pretty hard when you are guarding from the top of the key to the arc in a zone. Man to man she generally holds her own but doesn't really have the footspeed to be a great help side defender. That is why no one is afraid to go take it straight to the rack, they know MR isn't going to be there. So really, once you beat your man one on one you have a lay up.

Totally agree! Once KK gets in better shape and gets used to the pace of college basketball, whether it be this year or next, she’s going to be special in the post! She understands positioning and has good footwork already. There was a reason she was ranked #3 in her class, pre-injury!

Wait until we get Amira! Her and KK are going to be hard to stop in the future!
