Game Thread Lady Vols Softball in the Eagle Round Robin

...
Thanks for your thread on the games and understand you are going out west as well. Do you live out that way, just curious?:boobies:

I split time between Missoula, MT and Santa Fe/Albuquerque, NM. My wife is from Seattle and wants to go back there and we're both getting old enough that we're going to have to pick a place soon and call it home.

I have a brother who lives in Summerville, SC outside Charleston about an hour from Statesboro. This was an opportunity to see him, otherwise I wouldn't have come to these games.

The radio announcer commented that there was a lot of Orange in the stands.About how many Lady Vol fans would you estimate were in attendance.

Funny you ask. There is no admission to these games - they are free. Yet the box scores all show an attendance number. I don't know how they get that number. For the Georgia Southern game the attendance is listed at 916. Who counted? Beats me.

I would estimate that the fans in orange were around a couple hundred at least. Maybe twice that if the 916 figure is accurate.

Thanks Jeff. To me I just want up the middle the strongest part of the lineup defensively. Geer has played 2nd as a freshman I think and she is used to the center field position. Most say the CJ has the best arm on the team and RF is the place for the best arm (ie) Rainey Gaffin. I will roll with the coaches. Still think Lockman will end up catching more than Scarlett and that should help up the middle as well.
...

McClain is going to play her way out of the batting lineup. If she can't hit these schools then she won't hit SEC pitching so it will be back to a defensive specialist role for her just like the previous two seasons. This will be especially likely if both Lockman and McSwain keep their bats alive. Both have shown signs of it. Rowland was also a big prospect who hasn't done anything yet albeit her injury kept her out. If two of these three can hit for a good average and/or power then the clock is running out on McClain learning how to hit. I wish Ralph hadn't of turned her into a leftie. I know he was trying to take advantage of her speed, but given her troubles and the team needing right-handed hitters so badly, I would have preferred she stayed right.

I agree about Lockman. McSwain may get a lot of PT at a variety of positions including catcher, but Lockman is a better defensive catcher.

Jeff: Are you saying McClain was a right-handed hitter when she got to UT and Ralph made her a left-handed hitter? I don't think I've ever heard of that being done in college. Crazy. If McClain is dropped from the starting lineup, then who steps into the outfield in her place? This makes the Geathers disappearance even more strange.

They turned around India chiles and Kenora posey...they turned out okay especially chiles....CJ reminds me Kenora right in the development aspect of hitting

They also turned around some of the switch hitters a few year ago as well. This happens at most all of the major programs across the country.

Jeff: If you ask a couple of people, I'm sure you could find out what happened to Geathers. Inquiring minds want to know....

Gave up Softball last month to focus on academics.

I'm sure the skeptics won't believe that story, but it is what it is. She needs to graduate this semester for personal reasons and may not have been able to take (pass) a big enough class load while also playing.

Thanks for clearing that up deerpark

As others have noted it is not that unusual to turn a batter around. I know it happens at the college level, and I think it happens in high school and travel ball, although I don't know that for certain.

I didn't say McClain would be dropped from the outfield, just from the batting order. In four games she has one hit and is batting .125. Ralph really likes for the batter in the 9 spot to be able to turn the batting order over and get on base. McClain has been unable to do that. I'm just speculating that if she doesn't, she'll be dropped from the batting order. But she'll probably remain in the outfield even if that does happen.

Game time is at noon today vs UNC Greensboro.

Folks, follow this team as best you can. This is a really good team and they have a chance to be special in my opinion. (We'll know more after the tournaments in New Mexico and California in the next couple of weeks, the competition will be much stiffer there).

Also, think about this: TN has only one senior that plays any significant minutes and that's Megan Geer. Next couple of years this team could be really, really tough.

Go Lady Vols softball!

Appreciate your eagle eye and analysis of this team.

Thanks for what you do. i have a good feeling about this team. Hopefully I can catch a game or two when I come in next month.

It's overcast right now and they're calling for a 20% chance of rain. But I really don't think anything like that's going to happen. The temperature is 67 degrees and it's supposed to rise to 76, it's fairly breezy so I assume the cloud cover will blow off in the next little bit.

I'm anxious to see how the team responds today. It's their fifth game in 48 hours. It would be understandable that they're mentally a little tired.
