Game Thread Lady Vols Softball NCAA Super REGIONALS

I would think this would be my lineup as well. SH before the redshirt was Leaches backup at 2nd. This may be why she is penciled in at ss. Our fundamentals were a little weak this year not including the slap debacles. Ayala made many baserunning mistakes and seems to not know whether to run or when to stay put. She is a freshman and along with Morgan fit in pretty well and overall did fine. Got to get Gabby going and Ashley needs to step in and get comfortable immediately. It would be nice to think we would hit as many HRs this next year but I don't see it. Lets go ahead and speak of coaching a minute. I think Ralph made more bonehead calls on the mound and while on offense than other years. Some never made since to many on hear as well as myself. Good people and good coaches anyway. Would love for Karen to take over and handle pitchers and find a proven hitting coach with experience in the art of hitting. MS does not fit the bill yet and may never since she has another career. JMHO:)

Osborn should be in the running for the SS job i would think it is Huffstetler's to lose but Osborn certainly is a big talent.
When we got to the SEC hitting went way down and of course I guess it should but not as much as it did. In the Super Regional have to blame it all on hitting the pitchers did well enough to at least win one of the games and not being able to score four runs against a freshman in the first game tells is all about our hitting the last part of the season.
Hitters are made in the off season. We need to see Morgan and Ayala improve their numbers by 50 percentage points as both need to be around .350 hitters next season.
Seggern needs to increase her power. were losing 25 homers between Gregg and McSwain. Shipman and a couple of the freshmen will take up some of that slack, but wouldn't depend on getting to 25 with them. The returnees have to hit more for us to get to the same number next season.

The Weeklys are great, consistent coaches. They have perennial top 20 teams. They recruit well, and and are known all over the country to be respectable people. They are arguably the most consistent coaches we have at UT right now. They are NOT going anywhere. Shame on whoever spreads rumors about the program.

it was a good year for sure

I do thing that Ralph pulled Matty because she was starting to throw those home run pitches

how they swing the bats next season will be interesting to watch, they hopefully will get a lot more production from the bottom of the order

getting another quality pitched will be paramount for sure, hopefully Sprang can get it together for next year

when I watched the games,I did keep hollering at the TV,where is Scarlet at :)

Matty's illnesses caused her to lose strength and conditioning. After Hawaii, she didn't have the same stamina and her pitches lost velocity when she got tired. The Weeklys seemed to lose confidence in her quickly, though all of our pitchers were prone to giving up HRs. We probably had a record year for that.

Can't put it all on pitching, though. The LVs had the top of the order up to save game #2 and keep us alive. UGA's big-time players made big-time plays when they had to and ours didn't. We had our chance, but top to bottom, we couldn't get it done.

Seemed like our slappers were really hurt by the stepping out of the box rule once SEC play started.

Other teams have succeeded slapping. I can only think coaching is not helping our slappers much

That was when the did not enforce the foot out the box rule .This year enforcement of that rule neutralized the effectiveness of slappers. It would be an interesting stat to see just how many slappers were called out under the foot out of the box rule this year .I noted someone said that 32 outs were called on Lady Vol slappers this year.

We need Holcomb's bat. She was great in the 2 hole until the umps started watching her feet and calling her out. They worked with her and CJ in practice, but neither could really adjust to the new rule this year. I'm sure that will be a priority for Holcomb in the offseason. She's a great player-- she'll get it down.

Yep watch this close in the CWS. The coaches are coaching players not to make our mistakes

Thought some of you would get a kick out of this. Was watching Florida and UCLA last night and my daughter walks by (she pitched for years nothing great but knows it - going to UT in the fall in business) I said to her hey take a look at the Florida pitcher. Barnhill throws one pitch and she starts screaming at the TV "that girl is leaping, I can't believe they are not calling that!". I laughed and said no kidding right :)

I am an infrequent visitor here but I did watch the same game last night. I also noted a different technique from the FL pitcher. I guess this adds momentum to her pitch. She remained in the circle with each pitch though. If I am wrong, please inform me why "leaping" is illegal.

I'm not entirely sure what your question is. If you are simply asking why "leaping" is illegal, the easiest answer is - because the adopted rules say it is. If you are asking why the NCAA chose to make crow hopping or leaping illegal, the answer would appear to be because the rules committee was apparently convinced that to allow this kind of activity would give certain pitchers who perfected the techniques an unfair advantage.

While I won't say that I necessarily agree with the rules as adopted, it's pretty clear that Barnhill violates those rules on almost every pitch she throws.

Jim

NCAA pitching rules:
10.4.5 Leaping is not allowed. The pitcher may not become airborne on the initial drive from the pitcher’s plate. The pivot foot must slide/drag on the ground.

10.4.6 The pitcher is not allowed to hop or drag to a replant (crowhop), gain a second starting point and push off her pivot foot. Once having lost contact with the pitcher’s plate, the pivot foot may trail on the ground but may not bear weight again until the pitch is released.

Crow Hop

The most common illegal pitch, crow hopping, occurs when the pitcher removes her rear pivot foot from the pitching plate and replants it before delivering the ball. The pitcher often takes a small hop off the plate, inspiring the illegal pitch’s name. Leaving the plate in such fashion cuts the distance to the batter, giving the pitcher an unfair advantage.

Leaping

Softball pitchers also must keep their trail foot in contact with the ground, dragging it behind them as they push off from the pitching plate. If the pitcher lifts both feet off the ground at the same time, the umpire can call her for leaping and issue the standard penalty of one ball for the batter and one base for all runners.

Just FYI leaping isn’t banned internationally

What’s really complete non-sense is the consistency of the call. Last night they waited until the 5th inning and called it just that once. The umpire has to be willfully ignoring it all game prior to that because as many you saw with ESPN closeups the foot leaves the ground every single time.

In small writing it must say somewhere the crow hop rule doesn’t apply to Florida specifically Barnhill. I hope they get beat!
