Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team NCAA Regionals

That was in the Ohio State game...the dropped fly in left. Our gals just didn't make plays today...3 of the 4 runs in the last game were unearned, right? I just thought pitching was good enough...defense just has to make plays! Vines is a quality player...not picking on her...but she should focus on improving defensively...great speed on the bases and a really good hitter.

Thanks I did not get to watch that game. Was it Vines who dropped it? I have sung her praise all year and again today . My bad!:

Early thoughts on this years roster compared to next. We lose 4 seniors. After looking I think we may lose up to 3 more. I know nothing but this is only my opinion and I will not name names. You can go back and take a look and see what your thoughts are. Someone on here earlier in the thread that the Weekleys hurt us badly by not getting any pitchers for 3 years. From what we had on the roster that probably is true. That is on them. Injuries are a part of sports and the Gaffin one burned us badly due to us not having any pitching that is effective. Bush may bet better but I am not sure she is SEC quality although I hope so. Arnold, a righthander and Martin a lefthander and Seggern I think is a righthander as well should bet to show what they are made of. I look for Martin who is a tall young lady to take the 1st base spot over and either of the other player who can win 3rd base early is a blessing. Aucoin was never a good pitcher and was only adequate at bat and 1st base. Just my 2 cents worth!!

I think Martin, the incoming freshman hitter/pitcher, is also a left bat! Too many lefties! Not sure about Jenna Holcomb...

Martin is a power left handed hitter. I can hang with some power from the left side. Someone on here in a earlier thread said they hoped Ralph would go out and get some power hitters. They tried this a few years back including Aldrette and Koenig in the same class. They said and I agree that we probably need to go back to slappers and speed which the LV brand developed quite successfully. Martin being LH will certainly not be a handicap no where near what Aucoin was nor anyone else. She is a smart softball player and seasoned through summer ball. Just happens to be the valedictorian of South Gibson County High as well. We are lucky to get her and keep her as well. Lot of quality schools were after her services.

I went to that link providing the list of our newcomers for 2017. I also went to 247 Sports to see what I could find out about them. Didn't see anything just with a quick glance.

Where/What's the best site to check recruiting rankings for softball? I'm talking about team & individual recruiting rankings. I'd like to read more about them & find out how many stars(1 star-5 star) their recruit status is. Thanks!

Just my humble opinion. We had a good/very good team and a good/very good season. Neither great. We need more balance in the lineup. We need an upgrade defensively in several spots. We need BOTH pitching depth and a hammer. I don't believe we currently have a pitcher on the roster who can ever be the hammer. I will proudly stand corrected if that proves to be wrong. We need a change of philosophy when it comes to situational hitting. We have a poor situational hitting team, relative to the talent. It is not acceptable to not get bunts down when called on to do so. It is unacceptable to not put a ball in play when a runner needs to be moved over or driven in from 3rd with less than 2 out. Our players make no obvious physical adjustment at the plate in these situations. Taking a different mental approach is not enough. If you have to move on top of the plate, move to the front of the box, choke up 6 inches and spread your stance out another foot to make sure you put the ball in play so you force a fielder to make a play - then do it. But it was a fun season and a nice run

I can say with 95% confidence that Jenna Holcomb (who throws right) bats left. She's a leadoff hitter for her high school team (Los Alamitos) at least, not sure about her travel ball team (So Cal Athletics). Taylor Rowland, Brooke Vines and Jenna Holcomb all played for the same travel ball team. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the highly talented speedster becomes one of our regular starters in the outfield and settles in either at the top of the lineup (#1-2) or the bottom of the lineup (#8-9) next season. Holcomb will give the Weeklys more speed and sure bat to work with for sure. Not sure about her fielding prowess at this point. My fingers crossed...

We lose four seniors to graduation and have seven incoming freshmen which will make our roster for next year 23-player deep which is not unusual. We may lose up to 3 but at this point, I only expect to lose one player: #7 Kassidy Galo. I think all the other 15 players will return for next season. 22-player roster, that's doable...

What's the status with Rowland? Did she have a knee injury? Is she on the mend? Anybody know? We will be counting on her and Lockman next year, as well as at least two of the freshmen, I believe. Overstreet's production will be hard to replace.

Knee injury in the fall. They expect her to be the first baseman next year. Ralph has said in several interviews she would have started this year if not for the injury.

I also don't know anything going on inside the program but Scarlet McSwain's spot for next year doesn't look to be assured at this point. Other than Galo (I think she will stay at UT and work to graduate), I suspect McSwain may look to transfer out..

Guys don't forget Gabby Sprang the dominant left handed pitcher coming here year after next....She has quite a resume...

Next season let's all hope the pitching is better...If Rainey had not been hurt, we would still be playing, maybe.

I've been watching a lot of the coverage of the different games, and pitching, as usual, is so often the deciding factor in so many games.

If Bush can ever find her pitch again, it would be nice.

You guys were a lot of fun to follow the games with...I salute you guys.

If we have 7 incoming freshmen why does the link someone provided earlier to our newcomers for 2017 only show 4?

Also, I did ask a question about softball recruiting in the following post if you or somebody else can answer those for me. Here's my quoted post:

I see on goldfastpitch.com that we have 9 commitments for next year. All are well though of and good players. I still think we lose 3 and maybe McSwain as well. Good to have good competition at each position.

I do not know of any site to get the information you want. I do not believe softball uses ****** as ranking.

We were badly hurt by McSwain's situation this year. She had a solid year last year as a freshmen--.294 avg., 10 homers and 33 (or so) RBIs and maybe the best slugging percentage on the team (more than .600). She might have been expected to improve on those numbers this year. Instead, she got off to a slow start--and then got benched because of her poor defense, and down the stretch of the season was a spot player who didn't hit--which didn't surprise me as her confidence was probably in tatters. A major down year, to say the least. Third base is not that hard to play--I played the position--and it is baffling why she had problems to begin with, after playing the position last year, and baffling as to why the coaches could not fix it. Getting so little right-hand production out of her and Lockman, who simply could not get untracked--really hurt us this year, as did the lack of pitching depth, which I lay at the feet of our coaches as we did not have either a sophomore or junior pitcher on the squad.

I agree with everything you said. We should have closed that 3rd base stop during the fall last year and spring this year. A mortal sin for not having pitching. I know they promised Erin they would not add anyone else in her class and it caused them to turn down Nunley who I would argue is the better pitcher now. We must remember that Erin also was injured. We were just lucky that Gaffin was also a pitcher who was recruited for her athletic ability and hitting, not pitching.

Honestly recruiting in SEC softball should be more about evaluating than recruiting.many of the west coast girls love to come here because of the fan support and the south is producing more because of the success and growing popularity

Hum. I figured they had stuff like this just like they do women's college basketball. Sites to check out players rankings & gain more information about them in softball. That would surprise me if not. Maybe somebody else can chime in & let me know of a website that provides this information. Thanks!

You know JC I think using the recruiting term is a little overused by most of us. With the contacts and background on the west coast I think the Weekleys do a pretty good job with that area. You are most certainly right that those left coast young ladies love coming to the south and one drawback may be that when they don't get to play every day they tend to migrate back toward home. Aldrette was a head case who went back to Cal and carried a unhappy Koenig ( who could not play 3rd either) with her. Another that comes to mind right away is Spigner who lost her 3rd base spot to Chevanne went back to Arizona to ride the pine mostly, however she is the team manager now and most happy that they beat us 3 times this year. There are 2 other ones but I do not recall their names now.
The LV name and I still know the new girls still use the LV name, recruits itself.

Unfortunately, I think we might see McSwain transfer out if she wants playing time. I think the slow start and the defensive lapses shattered her confidence. For whatever reason, it seemed like she just couldn't get it back and I think the Weekly's have lost confidence in her too. I hope that she stays and pulls it altogether. I do think she's a very good player and she's a sweet kid.

Aldrette wound up hitting about .260 for the season, just checked her stats...and Koenig hit about .177...neither up to their potential. On another interesting note...there were a total of 13 games played in regional tournament play today involving SEC schools...Tennessee committed 5 errors in their 2 games...the rest of the SEC schools, in 11 games, committed only 4 errors collectively! Defense, or lack thereof, did our gals in, along with offensive futility.
