Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team SEC Tournament

I am not the coach either and don't want to coach any more but I say we start the same way as with LSU but I think Erin starts. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yes, Gabriel probably starts game #1 of the regionals. Moss will pitch game #2. Hopefully we win both & advance to the supers after only 2 games. This way Gabriel saves her arm from pitching another game so she would be more rested for the super regionals game #1. :)

Whoever comes out of the regional, the team will need to have a minimum of 3 wins to advance to the super regional. Tennessee could play as few as 3 games or as many as 5 games. It's a double-elimination bracket with 4 teams in it.

That's right. I forgot about it being a double-elimination bracket. I get this mixed up almost every year. :eek:

I watched the same game you did. I want her back in the lineup next game. Too bad nobody else does.

If she's going to stand there and watch pitches-no. We need some leadership from her. She's a junior. If she can't take SEC pressure go play someplace else.

None of us are picking on Geer. Lots of posters have sung her praises many times during the season. She is a sweet kid and angelic in demeanor! We just like her even more when she raises some hell at the plate! :)

Yeah really. I'm sure she expects more from herself (she better) and so do the Weekly's. They didn't stick her in the 4 spot to watch pitches. Better luck next time doesn't win championships. Hope she redeems herself if she gets a chance.

I wonder just what the hell Ralph was telling her right before that at bat? whatever it was, don't do it again.... :(

Even the best batters take a seat on the bench 6 times out of 10. For Geer this was one of those six times. That's all it was. If you think she can't take SEC pressure, then it's you that hasn't been watching her play, not me.

Jeff, you are wrong on this arguement, and the more you argue/defend Geer, the weaker your argument becomes. It's time to count your loss and move on.

There are numerous examples to give, but I'll just cite the following;

Why is Michael Jordan remembered/adored as perhaps the greatest basketball player that ever lived? B/C time after time Jordan arose to the occasion when things mattered the most, put his team on his back, performed the best under the most stressful situations/moments and carried his beloved Chicago Bulls to the glory of 6 NBA World Championships. Remember the flue game in 1997 NBA Finals against Utah Jazz? He scored nearly 40 points in that game and willed his team to a critical win in the series. Had Jordan failed, I'm pretty sure Jordan wouldn't have used, "well, basketball players only make 45% of the shots. My missed shots at the critical juncture of the game were part of those normally missed 55% shots," kinda excuse and shrugged it off as an off-day even when he was sick as a dog.

Kirk Gibson's home run (when he only had one healthy leg) in 1988 World Series is another example that comes to my mind when an ultra-competitor, a true champion rose to the occasion despite the odds stacked against him, and performed best under the pressure. And won his team a World Series Championship.

If Megan Geer is the type of competitor I know that she is, then I'm pretty sure that she won't use the kind of excuse that you alluded to. If she's a true competitor and a champion, then I expect her to have a short-term memory, forget about that awful at-bat, come back stronger, perform like a champ and do her best to carry her team to another WCWS. At least compete. We are not asking her to put out Jordanesque performance and win a championship singlehandedly. But man up and admit your mistakes. And please do swing that bat when you get another chance like that.

Hopefully Geer learned from that at bat take a few cuts at the ball. Those were good pitches and very hitable. One at bat doesn't make her a bad player she has been awesome for Tennessee and will continue to do so. I just hope for now on she goes up there with an aggressive mentality and take some swings at the ball when it is right down the middle of the plate. We don's need walks from her we need aggressive hitting.

Here are various postings made about Geer: She made a half-hearted effort to catch a ball, she's looked shaky at every at-bat, she was lucky to hit a home run, she doesn't have a true position, she hasn't lived up to expectations, she was a no-show, the pressure got to her, if she can't take it go somewhere else.

But I'm wrong and lost with a weak argument??? All I said was it was one at-bat and to let it go.

All that trash above was said by the rest of you.

But I'm wrong and lost with a weak argument??? All I said was it was one at-bat and to let it go.

All that trash above was said by the rest of you.

Trash? Let's examine what's been said;

1. Half-hearted effort to catch a ball: I said that. From what I saw, if Geer had located the ball a bit early and had tracked the ball one step/one second earlier, it looked as if she might have had a chance to catch the ball. After all, the ball just barely cleared the wall. I was also comparing Geer's fielding prowess in the center field to that of Gaffin's. Who would you rather have in that situation? Trash post? Obviously not. Don't think so. It's a valid argument.

2. She looked shaky at every at-bat: I didn't say that. But she didn't look all that confident against LSU pitchers. I for one 'tho didn't have problems with Geer until that particular at-bat. Trash? Not really. Once again, it's a valid argument IMO.

3. She was lucky to hit a home run against South Carolina: Again, I didn't say that. And I 110% disagree with the statement. She wasn't lucky, she was good to hit that home run. Whosever (shortstop??) said that should apologize to Geer. I think this can be categorized as such (trash).

4. She doesn't have a true position: I didn't quite say that way, but I implied that Geer didn't seem natural at any position she played at. Somebody else said it, but I don't totally disagree. Once again, it's a valid argument from what we've seen of Geer in her three years at UT. Personally, I think she's good enough to play at any position. She's a solid fielder not a great one. Trash? I don't think so. Once again, it's a valid argument IMO.

5. She hasn't lived up to expectations: I didn't say it, and I personally think it's a debatable point. She's lived up to expectations this year for sure. But her first two years, she might have slightly underachieved. Coming out of high school, Geer was such a highly regarded prospect that I personally thought she'd become an All-American by her sophomore year. Trash? Absolutely not. It's a valid argument.

6. She was a no-show: I didn't say it. If referring to SC game, that's obviously wrong. If referring to LSU game, it has some merits depending how one looks at it. Trash? No, I don't think so. It's a valid argument once again.

7. The pressure got to her: I said, "the pressure of the moment might have had the best of her" something along that line in regard to her last at-bat in the bottom of the 7th inning. It's NOT trash at all. It's a very valid point.

8. Go somewhere else, if can't handle the pressure: I think Sandvol said it. He didn't mean for Geer to leave UT for sure. He meant for Geer to be mentally strong and be able to handle the pressurized situation next time. Trash? Absolutely not. Tough love/parental advice? Yes, that's what it seemed to be like from my point.

I for one had no problem with Geer in LSU game except for that one seemingly poor at-bat. We all like Geer and respect her game immensely. But we also want her to be better than what she is, hope she does some great things for UT b/c she's capable of doing such thins. Simply put, we expect a lot out of her. She's one great player/kid. If she can't handle such expectations & gratitude at UT from the fans, I will also suggest her to go some place else to play.

Overreacting is not desirable but is expected of die-hard/loyal/passionate fan base such as the one we have here in the Big Orange Country. However, diminishing the magnitude of the occasion, (critical) situation in athletic competition and sweeping (the failure) the thing under the rug do not contribute anything towards building a successful program or boosting team morale in general.

First off I do not think Geer is our best player as DP does. I would say that Megan Gregg is the best player. If Ms. Geer or her followers read all this stuff then let me to be the first to say that I apologize for saying the HR against SC was a fluke. She perfectly stuck her bat out and hit the outside pitch over the right field fence.
You guys are taking this to a new level with this thread. I was thinking that each one of us who are true LV fans could state an opinion without someone getting un-guled.

I have never in my life seen a fan base so quick to eat its own as the followers of our women's sports at Tennessee.

Maybe because a lot of fan sites don't allow such negative postings. Wish we all would stay more positive with our Ladys. And of course we have trolls who roam freely....only thing to do with them is ignore.

Go ALL Lady Vols!!!
