Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Team vs USF Presidents Day Weekend Tournament

Tomorrow will be a good test, the Weekly's planned well and have Aucoin and Gaffin both available to pitch.

Next week's tournament will be a grind. Five games in three days all against quality opponents. I don't think the Nebraska game will tell us much as it will be game #5 and UT only has three pitchers right now as Tarango is hurt, so they will probably be a little gassed. Before Nebraska, they'll get a workout from Notre Dame, FSU, Utah and Cal. Utah is probably the weakest of the bunch and still a middle of the road PAC 12 team, which is pretty dang good. Don't look for these five inning run rule games next week. I would not expect the Weekly's to pull out all the stops for wins, as being down to three pitchers, none of them an innings eater like Ellen was, against five quality teams is tough, and they are not going to risk it. I would think they'll gladly take five losses next week in exchange for 18-20 SEC wins this season, which I think they can do if everyone stays healthy.

The tournament itself is quite the spectacle, played at a multi-field complex there are 35 teams, about 20-25 of them from power 5 conferences. Mary Nutter Classic if you want to look it up. One of the premier non-conference weekends of the season for us fans, the coaches like it as it gives them a chance to take inventory after playing these warm-up tournaments against weaker opponents early in the season.

I think they'll do all they can to win all games in PS. But may pull a pitcher early is things don't start well. Tennessee's pre season isn't going to help their RPI. So IMO they need to make a bit of a statement, and no Fla. On the schedule also effects the RPI....at least early. Sometimes I wonder whether the coaches worry more about their .800 winning % or championships. .800 % gets you another contract no matter what.
