Game Thread Lady Vols Softball Week 3

Ayala got 1 hit in 8 official at bats for the weekend. I certainly hope she gets better, but right now she is batting .130. Some freshmen start slowly and I hope that is the case with her. I think the Weekley's like her future. But someone needs to step up and nail down that spot in the lineup.. So far, it has been a huge hole in the batting order.

I hope and think she will get better but as we get to the SEC portion we need someone there. I am off the Bearden bandwagon. She has had numerous opportunities and just has not produced. We went through this same scenario for the last couple of years which you would think we would find a hitter some where. We tried Wiemer there as well. I just pray that Lockman can continue to hit a lick to solidify that catcher position. They changed her stance during the fall and spring and it seemed to help. Wonder why it took to her junior year to do that.JMHO:thud:

Right now we have two positions in the lineup that are not giving as much production as we need. DH needs to be a lot better looks like Bearden, Ayala, Weimer to some extent, with Batts and Hannon on the outside looking in.
Bearden has failed miserably hitting .050 and Ayala not much better. I would like to see Weimer or Hannon get an extended shot at that position.
Looks like McSwain has won for the most part the other OF position even though she has stretches where she can't hit at all. Down below .230 she does have 4 homers all were hit earlier in the season and she hasn't done anything lately.

Players that seemed to have improved greatly are Seggern, McClain, and Holcomb. Those three have been the key players other than Leach and of course the do all Gregg.

Lockman is on and off but at least has a decent average of .260

For me the offense is still under suspicion. We have definitely seen a lot of clutch hitting but still to be determined if some of the players will be consistent in performance as the season progresses into the tough SEC.

We really miss Brooke Vines. If we had her hitting between Gregg and Seggern, I think we would be as good of a hitting team as anyone in the country.

I hope she does not come back this year and have plenty of time to heal. Will need her bad the next two years with Gregg gone!

Who we got coming to take Gregg's SS position hopefully a player that is already great.

My guess would be Kaitlin Parsons from California who played at the same school as Megan Geer.

Also maybe Gracie Osbron from Henry county tenn. high school in Paris , same school as Scarlett McSwain.:thud:

Actually she had 9 at bats and 2 hits both Doubles.

1st weekend she was 0-8 .000
2nd weekend she was 1-6 .167
this last weekend she was 2-9 .222

Well Lockman is it for this year period. The 2 choices you have are Lockman or McSwain and as proven already this year you do not want McSwain behind the plate

What is up with Weimer and i had heard that morgan was an option as well.:thud:

I don't know that anything is up except for Ralph. Morgan I believe they want at 1st and Ralph just doesn't seem to want to play Weimer plus Weimer is like the other 2 just not a steady enough hitter

2019 Shipman

Sounds about right. For sure SM wont cut it but it seems KW is not going to get much of a chance unless she hits, of course that is true for all of them. Yes Morgan has nailed first down i think as well. Bearden has hit herself right to the bench. AL will be ok but we will have to live with .240 or so and strikeouts.
Looking to next year little Shipman will take over i really believe if she lives up to the billing.
Really miss having Madison no longer with us although IC will be great. Not sure what MS is doing now days and seems to be a unspoken subject. JMHO and thanks!:whistling:

You're right about Ayala going 2-9 and I stand corrected. Still need better out her than.222. I hope she picks it up because I would rather have her in RF and McSwain at DP. SM just seems to have trouble defensively every where they put her.

Tennessee softball coach Ralph Weekly: We beat BYU 13-0, but we threw 100 pitches in five innings, and I was tired of that. We spoke for an hour after the game, and both our pitchers left the meeting in tears. But they threw strikes the next day.

Wonder if Gabby left in tears as well since she is more wild than expected.
If she will come around we will be pretty darn good!:):)

You may be right but i would have thought if she could flash the leather she would have had the chance to play some 3rd base a couple of years back when everyone but Ralph tried to.
Hope she can give some competition and comes back stronger as well.:)

A great discussion on the offense lots of good info..
My take is that as with most teams it will come down to how well our pitching performs....Caylan and Mattie will need help and so far Sprang is really struggling.....

She is showing improvement every week

According to both Ralph and Karen she would start for a lot of SEC teams, unfortunately she is a middle infielder who got suck behind some very good middle infielders Like Leach and Gregg. She is not a 3rd baseman by any stretch

Over the last year plus there have been too many 3-2 counts especially on batters that they can handle. Its time to toughen up mentally turn into attack dawgs on the mound
