I saw several bright spots in last nights game.
- Andraya Carter is phenomenal. She is so quick and athletic. There was one play where she got a steal on the inbound. They replayed it in slow motion and she appeared to be going in regular speed while everyone else was in slow mo. I don't know if people notice or not, but although she is 5'9'' tall, she can really jump high, too. She's shooting light's out. She needs to start getting the first minutes off the bench over Jones.
- Although Simmons is still shooting poorly, her defense is very good. I think she's feeding off Carter's energy and doesn't want to be left behind. And, let's be honest, once she starts shooting average, let alone excellent, these games are going to turn into 30+ point blowouts.
- Although Burdick is still shooting poorly, she is rebounding well - this entire team rebounds well. Graves, Izzy, Russell, and Burdick are all especially active around the glass and that was the difference last night. Shooting %'s, turnovers, and steals were all very similar but we were in command of the game from tip-off to finish because of rebounding with a dash of GT foul trouble - which is going to happen when you're getting out rebounded.
- As a team, we seem to have upgraded this year when you factor in losing Taber and Kamiko, but gaining Carter, Russell, and all the new recruits PLUS all the players we had last year should be better this year and Ariel and Izzy have both really shown that so far. Hopefully Simmons, Graves, and Burdick will jump on that train soon. Graves made a nice, big first step towards that last night.
- The rest of the teams in the country don't seem as good as last year. With Griner gone, that really hurts Baylor obviously. With Diggins gone, that really hurts Notre Dame obviously. Although most probably don't notice or agree, I really think UCONN will have to work to be as good as they were last year after losing Faris. They don't have any new players that come close to her, so they basically have to rely on every returning player to be better, which they probably will be, but enough to replace a scrappy, hard nosed defender like Faris? Possible, but not a foregone conclusion. PLUS, UCONN has a super easy conference schedule. While the Lady Vols are going to be tested day in and out in the SEC right before March Madness, UCONN looks to have cupcakes with the exception of two games against Louisville.
The only causes of concern from last night were:
- Layups. Wow did we miss a lot.
- Jasmine Jones continues to worry me. I feel like if she doesn't get it together soon that she's going to get left behind and miss a window of opportunity.
