Mercedes will come into her own as the season goes on i mean she's still a freshman and every game will be a lesson so i'm sure she will keep learning and growing and eventually play to her true potential.

Burdick is mostly known for her rebounding, i never really considered her to be that good of a shooter.

She is better than the 24 percent she is shooting this year. I think she shot around 45 percent last season. if she could do that would be very happy.

Yeah althought Carter is shorter I'm sure she can keep up with Davis. Esp since they played together before..?

Yes she is shorter but so much quicker than Burdick. I watched her playing defense tonight she really puts pressure on the ball the player she was guarding was very uncomfortable.

I like 14 and 5 in 23 minutes that is a huge lift for our team coming off the bench. 6 of 8 shooting is also great.

at this point i would rather her not take those shots and just stay closer to the basket and gets us rebounds.

Yup, I said the same thing when I saw the boxscore. Although you don't see everything when you're not watching I'm pleased with performance, aside from the t/o.

Do you guys think they would pull either Simmons or Burdick and put Carter there?

Mass, Simmons, Carter would be on quick backcourt!

Burdick has been a good shooter--and she needs to shoot well. She just hasn't recently. And, of course, Simmons had ANOTHER bad shooting night.

Don't know what's up w/Burdick this year because last year she was pretty good. I guess you have to find a rhythm or get in the flow of the game & for her I hope it's soon. Last year she was almost unstoppable when she was on her game so we need her to come around & play w/confidence.

Mercedes is playing pretty solid for a Freshman. She's still trying to adjust to the speed of the college game but that's normal. Once she does, she's going to be very good. She appears to be getting a little better with each game and that's a good sign. Same goes for Jordan Reynolds. She made some excellent passes tonight btw, with a few of those to Mercedes. And as for Andraya Carter, man, what a player! She's the spark we've been missing, especially on defense. She is really going to be something special.

I'm glad we got the W tonight but as some have mentioned, we need to learn how to keep a big lead. We're really bad for getting a big lead early on and then letting the other team back in it. Dominate teams don't do that.

Burdick had the most reliable mid-range jumper on the team until this year. Let's hope it is just a slump. I am beginning to think that our summer work suffered with the change over in training personnel and some of the controversy. Their conditioning looks good but several of the players have failed to progress on their skills over the summer. And Burdick's shot has certainly regressed. Massengale really became a completely new player though. I really didn't think she could play this well.

Davis is the truth. If she had come here I bet we would have won some championships. She won't win squat at Ga Tech, but she would have made us the dominant team in short order. Now we have to find the next player with that sort of talent. At least DeShields was smart enough to roll her own team. Davis doesn't have any good young players to grow with her so she will always end up short everywhere but the stat line. But that is what she wanted.

We should never have let Ga Tech back in the game. It is good we fought back and showed some resourcefulness. Now we have that in our bag of tricks lets add the trick where we stomp on their throats once we have them down. Also good to win on a night when we don't shoot particularly well.

And does anyone know WTH a charge is now? The refs were bad enough under the old rules, but now they just let the defender get run over while the ball handler is out of control and they call a block. That is what I meant by how they were trying to get the women to play Red Sea defense like they do in the pros --- where they try to artificially pump up the scoring and end up making the game unwatchable. There is a reason people watch women's ball instead of the NBA and if they keep this up then there really isn't much reason to watch a less athletic version of the same bastardized crap that isn't anything like actual basketball.

Anyway, good win. That was the best team we have played so far by a good margin. If Simmons and Burdick can regain their shooting form then we should be OK. I expect Megan to have a breakout game here soon.

Congrats Lady Vols! On another note, my wife attended the Marquette-Vandy game in Nashville today. PAT was there & autographed her latest book, along with Marquette's assistant coach TYLER SUMMITT! They even took time pre-game to chat with her, which was a thrill! Gave a check to TYLER for the Alzheimer's Foundation. Oh yes, TYLER's Marquette team beat that other team, too!

She definitely needs to get stronger and faster. Also, I'd really question the level of competition she played against in high school. You can tell she has the skills though.

She was rated #1. I'm hoping they took competition in to account when ranking her. She has a great skill set, just needs to add to it. Jmo.

I guess Davis chose Ga. Tech because she can drive home everyday. After we failed to meet her demands guess that was her best choice. I think right now she looks to be the best player in that class. Mercedes, Diamond and Kaela all had the same grade of 98. In the long run with increased strength I think Mercedes will prove out as number one. They never lifted weights at her school and that is something new to her. It is gonna put on some muscle and she will be very hard to handle in the post.

After the game is over, may I suggest that all you denigrators(complaining bball experts?) rewatch the game one or two times. You get a MUCH better understanding of just what happened during the game.

Kaela Davis played awful, except for about 4 minutes of time. She stood around on Offense, did nothing on Defense and sulked around like a prima donna. All the talent in the world won't help a ten cent head.....

Burdick shut her down after her little spurt in the second half.

Simmons isn't scoring well right now (who is?) but she hustles on defense, gets the ball to the right place (and then Burdick, Graves, Russell or Harrison misses the layup) I'd take her on my team any damn day....

last word, WE WON Enjoy it, dammit!

Watching the game it seemed odd to look at the score and see GT back in the game. Just watching the flow of the the game didn't give the impression that GT was back in it unless you looked at the score. We took some quick shots and missed while they hit some awesome 3's that allowed them to come back. Once we settled back down it was game over. Davis is a dang good player and we could have used her. Just from reading her post game interview it gave me the impression that she really wanted to be a Lady Vol. I may be wrong on that but some of the stuff she said made me feel that way.

I saw several bright spots in last nights game.

- Andraya Carter is phenomenal. She is so quick and athletic. There was one play where she got a steal on the inbound. They replayed it in slow motion and she appeared to be going in regular speed while everyone else was in slow mo. I don't know if people notice or not, but although she is 5'9'' tall, she can really jump high, too. She's shooting light's out. She needs to start getting the first minutes off the bench over Jones.

- Although Simmons is still shooting poorly, her defense is very good. I think she's feeding off Carter's energy and doesn't want to be left behind. And, let's be honest, once she starts shooting average, let alone excellent, these games are going to turn into 30+ point blowouts.

- Although Burdick is still shooting poorly, she is rebounding well - this entire team rebounds well. Graves, Izzy, Russell, and Burdick are all especially active around the glass and that was the difference last night. Shooting %'s, turnovers, and steals were all very similar but we were in command of the game from tip-off to finish because of rebounding with a dash of GT foul trouble - which is going to happen when you're getting out rebounded.

- As a team, we seem to have upgraded this year when you factor in losing Taber and Kamiko, but gaining Carter, Russell, and all the new recruits PLUS all the players we had last year should be better this year and Ariel and Izzy have both really shown that so far. Hopefully Simmons, Graves, and Burdick will jump on that train soon. Graves made a nice, big first step towards that last night.

- The rest of the teams in the country don't seem as good as last year. With Griner gone, that really hurts Baylor obviously. With Diggins gone, that really hurts Notre Dame obviously. Although most probably don't notice or agree, I really think UCONN will have to work to be as good as they were last year after losing Faris. They don't have any new players that come close to her, so they basically have to rely on every returning player to be better, which they probably will be, but enough to replace a scrappy, hard nosed defender like Faris? Possible, but not a foregone conclusion. PLUS, UCONN has a super easy conference schedule. While the Lady Vols are going to be tested day in and out in the SEC right before March Madness, UCONN looks to have cupcakes with the exception of two games against Louisville.

The only causes of concern from last night were:

- Layups. Wow did we miss a lot.

- Jasmine Jones continues to worry me. I feel like if she doesn't get it together soon that she's going to get left behind and miss a window of opportunity.

Perhaps you should start viewing the games with a more realistic eye.

Carter is a better player than should be expected. A pleasant surprise.

Simmons is a mess. No consistency and that is critical. Plus I can't see how her teammates are not annoyed with her constant jacking up of ill advised shots that she usually misses. Considering her speed, her defense should be much better than it is. On the other hand, the team likes rebounding over offense, so perhaps they like Simmons' misses because they represent a rebounding opportunity.

Regarding the rest of the teams in the country, I assume you are aware that the Lady Vols have not played any of them yet, and will not for another month.

If you have watched uconn play, and still think they are not better than last year, I question your analytical skills. I presume you know that two of their best players are injured, and over the past week they still beat 3 ranked teams by double digits. Regarding missing Faris, their defense is still the best of all ranked teams. And frosh Saniya Chong is a good defender and superior shooter. Against Penn State, she was 5 for 8 FG and 3-6 3pt. Plus they have 3 players as fast as Simmons.
Uconn may have an easy conference schedule, but their OOC schedule is very difficult. TN has an easier schedule than last year and an unranked team (Ga Tech) being within 3 late in the game does not inspire confidence for the future.

I thought we played out of rhythm much of the game and our rebounding bailed us out. Agree about layups. We have been missing layups for contested and uncontested layups for YEARS! Time we took our time and made some.

Mercedes is gonna be something special....as is Jordan. I like our talents and getting them to work together as a team is going to be a task but definitely worth the effort.

Jasmine seems too laid back at times. I still think she will develop. She has a very nice shot and can rebound.

Ariel is playing well and we need that. Stick those shots back in ladies.

Let us discuss this difference in schedules you have been boasting about.

UCONN will play or have played according to the current rankings, 6 teams in the top 25 and 2 more teams receiving votes for the top 25.

UT will play or have played according to the current rankings, 8 teams in the top 25 and 4 more teams receiving votes for the top 25.

Now what were you saying about UCONN's much tougher schedule?

Jones is still "thinking" IMO. on the learning curve, not as skilled coming from HS. Will her athletic plus basketball potential be reached this year?
Seems like the LVs had a senior last year who took her time developing. When she was a freshman we all thought she would be an All-Amer soon.
