Just got back from the game.
A few observations (regarding freshmen esp.);
First of all, MS St is a pretty darn good BB team. I wouldn't be surprised at all if they find themselves in SW16/E8 in the NCAAs. They are that good a team. Just could never shake them off even after going on a few nice runs and being up by 15 its or more at times. MS St always fought back and gave themselves a fighting chance until the very end. They got some nice athletes who could drive, shoot and play some tenacious D. I just could never feel comfortable even up by double digits...
Lady Vols just collectively weren't as sharp today for whatever reasons. Burdick had a great offensive game, so did Carter/Graves/Nared, and we needed every single one of them contributing to pull this one off. It was a total team effort.
It was frustrating to watch the LVs force some interior passes earlier in the game which turned into unnecessary TOs robbing us of valuable possessions. Mentally not in the game out of the gate. Just trading baskets for much of 1st half, ouch. The intensity and defensive energy weren't just there...
I have some doubts about Middleton; she got exposed a number of times on the defensive end. She just looked one-step too slow to me. She lacks elite-level quickness, and their quick guards did whatever they wanted to do when Middleton was guarding them. She was a defensive liability. On top of that her offensive game was off today as well. Then again, at this level really "quick" guards are hard to stop anyway, and maybe Middleton just has some growing pains to go through, and will be alright given more time. She might have hit the freshman wall as many do at this juncture. Who knows? She's got decent size; she just needs to learn make better reads, and good decisions.
Dunbar is the best shooter on the team bar none. She just never misses in warmup. Obviously she needs to get a little stronger particularly on the defensive end before Holly trusts her with more PT. But I came away very impressed with her shooting ability. I think She can become a solid contributor for us down the road.
J. Nared IMO is a superstar waiting to happen. If not, at least All-SEC level performer by her junior yr. Good size, and she's a just pure athlete. Introverted, she may not look that aggressive, but i could tell she's a competitive person, and hates to lose. She's a winner. She'll be a factor for us in the NCAAs come March. Mark it down.
TBA got loud at times when LVs made their runs, and I did my share booing the refs and demanding better hustle and plays from our girls.
On to the Gators!
