Game Thread: Lady Vols vs. Ole Miss; Thurs Feb 2nd @ 6:30PM; SECN+

If you did pay attention to the live gamethread, you would notice I'm not there either, win or lose. Too busy, ya know, watching the game...
‘zactly.
I doubt I would have thrown in the towel, even if they would have lost tonight, but that was a big win.

I was surprised by all the pregame predications for a big Lady Vols win. Ole Miss is the type of team with their great defense and athleticism that we might struggle with. So, I was really impressed with the Lady Vols in the way they killed Ole Miss in terms of assists, turnovers, steals, 2nd chance points, and moxie (yes itis a real stat... in my head). Instead of talking about how ugly it is, our defense and effort was a sight to see. Also, this is the 7th game we held a team to single digits in the first quarter. Another sign of our defense potential! This game we play defense the whole time.

It was a good win. Always say, win the games you’re supposed to win. Just stated we need more from certain players, is that wrong?
No. This is a forum where we act like coaches pointing out the negatives and positives. But Rah Rah whoopee. Goodness.

I hate how we get beat off the dribble for layups. Most are not even contested. That's a big no no in tournament ball. Hopefully we can clean that up. Otherwise we were pretty solid defensively tonite.

Really strange game we won by 14 and really were kind of terrible offensively. We played some match up zone in this game and it created a lot of steals and bad passes by Ole Miss.

you've got to remember Ole Miss is #4 in the SEC,,,it was going to be a war
I will take an ugly win,,,a beautifully ugly win !

She’s desperate and trying to find anyone who can contribute meaningful minutes. The problem is we have mid major talent outside of Jackson and Horston. I don’t want to fault her for trying, bc I’ve been on the “give some players a chance” train for a while, but man, If this is all we have then next year is going to be a disaster.
The group you’re referring to, made it to the Sweet Sixteen last year without this year’s players from the portal, and without Horston, Green, Marta, and with Rae who was not 100%. We had Alexus and Tamari, but now we have Jillian, Justine, and Powell. The Freshmen from last year will be Juniors and will be stronger and more experienced. Jillian and Striplin should be really good next year, and I have high hopes for Justine.

Did not see the game. Someone said we played some matchup zone. I firmly believe that we should play a LOT of matchup zone.
It very well might improve the team as we are not a good man defensive team--and yet we play it 90 percent of the time and most of
our players get beat off the dribble pretty regularly and pretty easily.

We made the sweet 16 but didn't beat anybody decent to get there. We lost to the first good team we played--and that is very likely to happen this year, and it has happened in most recent years in the NCAA, if we're honest.

Kellie was asked twice in the presser about the starting lineup and why RJ was coming off the bench. Color me shocked. Kellie's answers made me want to roll my eyes. Apparently she despises change and likes to keep things very consistent. I just don't agree having 2 to 3 slower players starting over others. Striplin only played 9 minutes tonight but why is she starting. Mind boggling.

Good bounce back game with Horston making some timely plays. A bit of an off night for Rickea who should have had over 20 but was missing some shots she would normally make. FTs, layups.

Say what you will but Kellie has buy-in, the team effort and hustle was excellent all game long. That is really where the LVs won it. We won the Turnover battle and had a lot more assists, which suggest better ball movement (though the team's shooting % were about the same). We also had more overall shots even though the rebound totals were almost even. So, we are playing a faster tempo and creating more chances. We did that against a good defensive team so there are some definite silver clouds here in this "ugly" win. Actually, I don't think it was ugly all. The gloom and doom sentiment on this board was not anticipating a double digit win and controlling the game over the entire 40 minutes. (I was a little worried at pregame because Kellie came dressed for a funeral but maybe black is the new orange).

I am trying to get my head one thing. In the 4th quarter,TN went on a run and Coach Yo called a timeout. But, Tennessee continued to dominate the game even after the "magic time out. How can this be? :)

The team we beat in the second round was Belmont, who had just beaten #5 Oregon, to get to our game.

I thought Kellie looked great. She wore some sort of Orange necklace, and I think she wore Big Orange high heels. Sharp!
