Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs So. Car. ; Mon Jan 27th ; Home game; 7 PM Eastern; ESPN2

I love watching Coop play. She’s a competitor and a flat out dawg. Her and Ruby are players you can build a championship team around. Boyd and Latham are still young. They have the ability to be players that can take some of the pressure off of Coop and Whitehorn.
Same with Spearman. She just wasn’t molded to her full potential at her former school.
Tennessee has the pieces but they just haven’t been fully developed due to age, having to sit out due transfer rules, or coming from a former school that didn’t have a winning culture.
I’ll admit as loyal of a Lady Vol fan I am, I have the upmost respect for South Carolina and Coach Staley.
The Lady Vols are making a comeback and are poised to be a competitor to challenge the dominant Gamecocks of this era.
This is great for WBB and the SEC.
Coop will only get better, you have already seen the upside when she is on her game. I was sad to see her leave SC but knew it was best for her tbh. She was never going to fit into CDS’s system, she needed to spread her wings and do her own thing. It was the same for Saniya, not all players are meant to play in the system that SC runs and that is OK. Tonight for instance, she would have sat on the bench for Dawn a bunch, which is not good for the game of a player like her.

Btw, we will have played Texas, Scar, UConn, and LSU twice within a month, shortly.

Didn't we play four straight ranked teams in the non-conference last year? At any rate, we got lucky this year with OK, SC, and CONN at home. We have kept the losses to single digits so far including Texas away. The Vanderbilt game mars the record a bit, but they were favored earlier in the season before key injury.

Was really hoping for a win tonight so that LV fans could have chanted, "Overpaid! Overpaid!"

Trust me, I’m not questioning her ability to be an outstanding LV on and off the court.
I know she’s an elite talent.
I think she’s a better leader than most give her credit for.
When Kaniya Boyd our lone freshman scored 6 straight points in the 4th to get the team some momentum the first player to hype her up and show emotion has Cooper.
Ruby Whitehorn does this as well night in and night out.
It’s easy to overlook the small things but as we move forward these are the kind of athletic players with a winning mentality that will get Tennessee back to the top.

I was hoping for a win too. But I don't understand those kind of cheers (like "overrated"). To me, it sounds like people are diminishing their own win. (Now I might not be above dropping a chicken joke, but that's different. :)) And I am not worried about last year's schedule: that way lies madness.

creek, I don’t think it’s easier to beat a team like UCONN or South Carolina at home than on the road.
Next season, if we stay healthy just as we are currently it’ll be tough perhaps even tougher to beat us regardless of who we play and where we play.

SC freshman Joyce Edwards is an outstanding athlete. Great to see these young players year in, year out continue to grow and compete at a high level.

The LVs held SC to 70 points. The LVs had 49 rebounds; SC had 40. The LVs had 13 TOs; SC had 17. The LVs had 10 steals; SC had 8. Why didn't the LVs win this game? The answer is: SC had 5 players score in double digits, the LVs had 2 players score in double digits. Unfortunately, the LVs are not the scoring juggernaut that everyone, including myself, thought they were. This game showed that the LVs are a match in overall talent but not quite a scoring talent match for SC.

Trust South Carolina had a nice time here....

Anyone else notice at the end of the third quarter when whitehorn didn’t advance the ball to spearman for the layup? Very eye opening And disappointing. Spearman just turned and walked to the bench.

Real quick, just got home ...

First off, great comeback by the Lady Vols. They obviously came up short, but they didn't quit and there were many moments to be proud of for them. The crowd, which to me seemed stronger and louder (in big moments) than the reported 12 and change, was appreciative of the effort.

Of course, the crowd was also frustrated by some of the chucking going on and especially the lack of focus AND confidence under the basket which seems to me to be the cause of so many missed bunnies. Man! It's heartbreaking to think that if we'd only made a handful more of the two/three-footers we'd all be celebrating tonight. Dang.

But again, I'm proud they fought to the end. South Carolina is a really good, experienced team that goes super deep without any drop-off in talent or skill. It stinks we're spotting good offensive teams so many unanswered points because we are missing those super-easy shots those good teams tend not to miss.

Sweet story: I took the shuttle from the Ag campus tonight, and walking over to it met a super nice couple, sharply dressed in brand new Tennessee orange gear. They were extremely proud to share that they'd come all the way from Las Vegas to see their niece, Kaniya Boyd, play in this huge game.

They were surprised and delighted when I told them she has been such a joy for this longtime LV supporter to watch, and all us Tennessee followers are just thrilled she's a Lady Vol. Gosh, there were just so darn proud of her that it made my day. 🥹 So when Kaniya came through in the fourth, all I could think about was her aunt and uncle and how I was 💯sure that no matter the final score, seeing their niece come up big on that stage was as good as a win to them.

Loved that. 🧡

Great breakdown of the statistics. I would stay still that offensively Tennessee is one of the most explosive teams in WBB.
Keep in mind SC held LSU to 56 points.
Tennessee and LSU for most of the season were the top two scoring offenses in the country.
The low scoring tonight was dictated by SC’s defense.
Tennessee got some good looks but couldn’t get any rhythm going from the tough shooting night.
We have to learn from tonight and find another way to attack strong defensive teams with more balance.
I still feel we should run offense on the block to the top of the key with Latham and Spearman. Can’t always be a drive to the basket or kick out as the primary option.

I just don’t see how Coop’s bad shot selections are usually the ones brought up???? If y’all don’t like her just say that but let’s not pretend our losses and bad stretches of play is solely on her.
Everyone loves her while also realizing she absolutely shoots us out of games sometimes and just tries to go 1 on 4 too much. That will not work against these better teams we are playing now. Nothing is solely on any one player but we went south tonight when she tried to take over unnecessarily. We were doing much better when we were sharing the ball.

I (and several others) pointed out repeatedly that it is on the coach to correct that. We need to have more set plays with more screens and sharper cuts to get other players open. Jewel and Tess cannot get shots on their own against athletic guards. We have to pass crisply and not dribble into traffic all the time.

Kim has the tools on this team to win some of these games. If she is the coach we need in the long run she will start doing that. And the biggest part of that will be getting the players to mesh together into a cohesive unit.

Nice story
Don't blame you for not wanting to pay high prices to park your car.

With all due respect, I believe there are reasons that Vegas oddsmakers make adjustments for home court advantage re: point spreads. Crowd support, familiarity with the venue, stress of travel and change of routine, etc. can affect teams. Of course, occasionally an athlete or team may actually play better away from home, but those seem to be outliers.

There's a good reason that fans and coaches make such a big deal about hosting opening rounds of tournaments. Just sayin'.

Regardless, I do agree that we can be a really tough team this year and in the future if things go our way. We've seen how "surprises" such as transfers, injuries, rare illnesses, etc. can turn a contender into a "close but not top tier" team. People seem to have forgotten that just a few seasons we were 18-1 (with a future first-rounder out during that stretch) and ranked #4 with ESPN doing features on our postgame celebrations. Right now, lack of a defensive post presence seems to be our Achilles heel.

I think I was trying to suggest something about the duality of man...the Jungian thing.

If the game is close at the end, the home advantage is definitely real. Players often talk in post-game pressers after close home wins about how the fans had helped them believe they could win it.

I notice some players are not thrown the ball or rebounded for as intensely as other players. Hard to say why that is. I imagine there are a variety of reasons, none of them good of course.
