Game Thread Lady Vols vs Texas

I'm not going to dwell on the last three games if Tennessee comes out like gangbusters against Texas. This is a good test for them, since both teams are led by dominant inside players. Texas' frontcourt is superior in size and ability, so we will see how the Lady Vols respond if the guards need to carry the game.

Mercedes, Bashaara and Diamond have been the only good players this season. Frankly, outside of the first game, the rest of the team has played like garbage. If they can't step it up in this game, I don't see this team being a contender come April.

Massey has UT by 7 (68-61) but Sagarin has Texas in a 1 pt squeaker- basically a tossup.

Too early in the season to rule them out... it took them some ugly wins and a bad loss to texas last year to find their identity and create roles for each player

I disagree. There are, what, 25 more regular season games to play? You don't think it's possible to lose to Texas and then improve in those other 25 games and contend for a spot in the final four? That's what happened last season.

Don't make this game out to be anything more than it is - an early season out of conference matchup against a team that may or may not be real good.

Ignore the final score if you will and concentrate on whether or not the LV's are competitive, play a good game, and improve over their previous few games.

A busy week for Tennessee continues, as Holly Warlick's squad hosts its third of three games (Chattanooga, UAlbany, Texas) in this calendar week.

Tennessee is 1-0 vs. ranked teams this season, defeating #25 Syracuse, 57-55, on Nov. 20, and the teams the Lady Vols have played thus far are a combined 16-6 through Nov. 27.

Texas will play its first ranked team of 2015-16 when it comes to Knoxville, and the Longhorns have faced squads that are a combined 4-14.

Let's see if quality of competition pays off.

Throw each teams' prior competition in the trash can. We have no idea what Holly's plans were during the first four games. All we know is that we had a lot of poor shooting, a lot of tournovers and lot of wholesale subbing. We will see if we can beat their tall post. If Russell has to take a rest, will we be at a serious disadvantage in the post? Will the "throw it inside offense" be nil because of Texas' post play? We know we will get the zone, will a shooter rise to the occasion and become a zone buster? Can we get the turnover bug reduced by 1/2? Will we play up to our capabilities?

There are a lot of questions that may be exposed Sunday. I hope they are not questions that cannot be resolved.

Texas can put 6'3", 6'4", 6'4", 6'5" and 6'7" on the floor they will sometimes play 6'5" and 6'7" on the floor at the same time. We played this combo last year. We do have Russell and Graves but they must be ready for a physical game. Russell must play more aggressive and cannot stand by and be a watcher. If she plays like she did the last three minutes against Albany, Graves play like she has played and double D bring her A game it will be a different contest than it was last year. This is no game for a fragile player like Moore. Holly will have to coach a good game. That could be the difference maker.

Except even last year's team was blowing out teams during the "cupcake" home portion at the beginning of the year. I don't see many parallels here....

This is what's concerning. Even the "worst" TN teams over the last decade blew out these teams. We've struggled in every game.

The problem is that Tennessee plays down to the level of their opponents. They did that last year, and eventually it caught up to them...and they were a better team than this year up until Izzy got hurt.

Exactly. There's been nothing they have shown to date to indicate that they should be considered a top team. Maybe if Diamond gets healthy, but they are going nowhere with the current level of play from every single guard on the team.

A lot of times you play down to your competitoes, hope they play up Sunday

Tennessee plays down to their competition, and has done so for at least the past few years. The elite teams don't let this happen. Maybe they might get a scare on the road against a team they are expected to beat routinely, but nothing like this spat of 2-3 point games at home against nobody teams.

Texas is an opportunity to buck the trend. I'm hoping that this is like the TAMU game last year, where they were clicking on all cylinders...but man, these guards have been tough to watch. Carter and Reynolds look like they are actually worse now than they were last year.

Imani whatever her name is, is no match for Russell, jones or Graves, our guards need to beat their guards, our post are solid. I think we win by 12

Quality, well-coached teams do not play up or down to their competition. In fact, the competition is irrelevant. They practice and play to a standard. And the best teams do it on every possession, offense or defense.

I think we match up really well against Texas. I don't know what defense they play but I expect a zone think we'd shred a man to man. For us we might have to play zone as well lot of quick guards on their team. I think Russell and their tall center cancel each other out. Game will be determined by guard play.

Having 13 or fewer turnovers is key. Playing only 7 or 8 players is also important.

If we empty our bench and have 18 or more turnovers, it will likely be a long and disappointing game.

Obviously the defense has to be as good or better as it's been too.

Hopefully they get out of this shooting rut too.

Texas is rested.

Texas has a lot of big girls. We will find out today just how good Russell really is.

Tennessee has struggled at home against teams with far less talent than Texas.

Tennessee does not shoot the 3 pointer very well.

I don't think Diamond is 100% healthy, therefore she will not be able to take over the game like she might be able to if she was not injured.

I can see Texas winning by 20 points, but I hope the Lady Vols can surprise all of us and pull off the Upset.

I wish Holly would come out with Diamond instead of Reynolds in the starting lineup today. They start four guards along with 6'7" girl. I am scared Reynolds can't guard one of them unless we go zone. Jones may have some problems too trying to guard a 5'9" player in the man to man.

I actually would start Russell, Carter, Diamond, Cooper, and Jackson against their small lineup.
