Game Thread: Lady Vols Vs UCONN. ; Thurs Feb 6th ; Home game; 6:30 PM Eastern; ESPN...WIN 80-76

If the LVs can get the win tomorrow, then win out in the SEC, there's a good chance our game against KY in Lexington will decide the coveted 4th place spot and double bye. Looking at the remaining sched, KY is going to pick up at least 3 losses, to LSU, TX, and SC. That would have us going into that game one game behind (assuming we don't lose again)plus the winner would have the tiebreak. IMO if that's the case, whichever coach wins that head to head should be the COY.

But it will be the lazy vote, it will be Dawn.
I was apparently having a senior moment earlier because I'd have sworn there was a Rookie Coach of the Year award, and that's what I was hoping Kim could pick up. Yes, I agree Dawn will be COY.

Now, if there were an award titled Most Intriguing Coach of the Year, the awards committee could just go ahead and have Caldwell's name engraved on it. She's caused quite a stir!

Looks like I'll miss the game also. I'll be picking up my brother in law at the Charlotte airport. We have had a medical event today with wifey's and his mom. looks like another stroke. I've been thinking her time has run out for years now but she always fights it off. Hope she does it again. :(
updating....

Doctors have said there is no hope for recovery from this event. We have hospice care for her starting on Monday if she makes it till then but Wifey and I have been taking turns caring for her since Thursday. We have her here at home in her own bed which was her expressed desire for end of life. Thanks for your prayers. Gule

Prayers to you & your family. Thankfully she can be at home as she wishes.

Great energy for four quarters.
16000+ fans.
Tennessee still hasn’t come close to reaching its ceiling as a team.
It’s scary hours on Rocky Top Tennessee.
CKC first transfer portal class is elite.
CKC first high school recruiting class is elite including 3 McDonald’s All-Americans.
GBO!

Goosebumps.

A few days later - the play was different in this game. The team was playing more as a team working for shots verses just throwing up the first quick shot at the basket every time. That limited the opportunities down the stretch for UCONN to succeed with that comeback run. CKC also used the timeouts in the last few minutes wisely verses just letting them play and hope it all worked out.

Better rebounding, better team play and better down the stretch coaching. That had to happen because the Lady Vols were not getting the possession margin the style typically depends upon.

With the last made shot that put the lead back to 4, ALL the available time was used to work for the best shot - which has not been the style played very much in the other games where they lost to a top 10 team.

Smart team play and smart coaching down the stretch - lots learned with this game - play like this in the rest of the games and they could make some noise in the tourneys at the end of the year.

I don't think it is an either/or. I definitely see some over-lap in Copper's and Ruby's games, as well as their similarities to Horston. I think both are quite different than Rickea, which was the initial post was about.
Agree. Right now they're both more Horston than Rickea, who has that extra gear of absolutely fluidity and smoothness that neither has quite reached yet. But they could!

Coop reminds me SO much of JH physically. She's a loper as opposed to a gazelle like RJ. Nothing wrong with that, just different.

She IS on this team and her name is Cooper
Just like Rickea, that "switch" just hasn't been totally flipped yet
Once it gets fully flipped,,,you'll see the rebirth of Ms Jackson

This is true. I don’t think many posters can fully comprehend the impact of Talaysia Cooper having to sit out a full season due to transfer rules while basically learning two different systems before playing a regular season game.
If you look at her first 20 plus games and Rickea first 20 plus games there’s certainly similarities between both in production and impact in games.
Cooper is athletically more talented while Jackson has the edge in basketball skills such as shooting and her versatility offensively.
Defensively, Cooper has the edge by a wide margin. Cooper gets called for some of her fouls because I don’t think the refs can truly adjust to how gifted her abilities are on that end of the court.
Kind of how TK was officiated from the C position the LVs all-time leading shot blocker, that’s what Coop has had to adjust to at the G position and she’s still averaging 3.2 steals per game.
Cooper will likely win SEC DPOY and possibly National DPOY after her performance under the weather against UCONN and Paige Bueckers the #1 WNBA draft pick. She didn’t have the best statistical performance but her impact on the floor was simply dominant on the defensive end.
GBO!

Cooper's quick hands are her superpower. Her steals as opponents have tried to inbound the ball under our basket have defined her as a defensive menace. And she's only going to get better as she matures.

Kim, in passing, said something of Talaysia recently along the lines of "when she takes care of her body" and 'if she gets into the gym," that made me think maybe Tay's not yet quite getting how much better she could be if she took a more serious approach to preparation. This is very, VERY common among natural athletes. The Candace Parkers -- the ones who realize that while still young in college -- are super rare. But if Cooper ever does reach that level of maturity while she's still at Tennessee, my goodness. Opposing coaches will be having nightmares.

I mean, she's already a huge problem for them even now, so the prospect of Cooper getting even better is pretty darn exciting.

I'd like to see her have an especially great game today. 🧡
