Game Thread Lady Vols vs. UNCG

I normally avoid taking the bait, but this constant refrain of "willing to play anybody just to get a W" gets old...especially when contradicted by facts.

You don't replace a cancelled game against #23 with a game against #15 "just to get the W."

The best response to such silliness is no response at all.

Last minute travel is a big expensive strain on logistics so I'm surprised they found and locked up an opponent so fast. I'm grateful to be able to see another game this year.

From the UNCG web site: "While the Spartans haven't faced the Volunteers in over four decades, they are a perfect 3-0 against the side, last beating Tennessee 81-79 in overtime at the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. on February 13, 1976"
In this season of COVID things change on a dime. You can’t always schedule the best and at least this game will get our ladies on the floor in a real game type situation. We don’t want to take any team lightly no matter the record.

And yet we keep showing we will play the worst teams possible just to get a W

This was supposed to be Stanford. Then it was Jackson State. Now it's UNC Greensboro. This is our reality now. I've been as critical of Kellie as anyone, but it's out of her control. Just be thankful they were able to still play a game at all. Practice doesn't substitute the experience of a real game, even against an inferior team. And check out the scores of the UConn and Baylor games today if you think Tennessee is the only team playing preseason cupcakes...

While today’s Balyor game was a quintessential Mulkey cupcake, UConn’s opponent, Xavier, is a Big East opponent. Can’t do much about that...

UConn had Quinnapiac, Louisville, and Mississippi State on their pre-conference slate, but COVID.

Does anyone know if McNeese was originally on Baylor’s schedule? Maybe Kim and KJH should have worked something out this weekend...

“Not the worst team in WCBB” is quote the compliment...lol.

I think they are in the bottom 10.
No to be exact there are 20 teams below them and Baylor, Texas A&M, North Carolina and other top schools have played several of them. So exactly what is not true about them not being the worst team in WCCB? We all know they are not a very good team but they are willing to come here and play and it is exactly the type game where the people that never get to play should get minutes today.

Where did I disagree that they weren’t the worst? I said I thought they were 345 or worse. They are 335. Good for them.

I agree with the rest of your post. Glad they would play. Needed a game.

they opened their season at UNC and were behind 51-11 at half time. I wonder how many possible candidates were contacted for late scheduling before finding they were the only option.
AND why would a team 1-6 benefit other than the memories for the players want to play this game? I would say Carson Newman would provide a greater challenge.

Beating a team by 50 or 100 to me doesn't mean anything..Kellie is smart and doesn't care about that unlike Baylor..

UCONN’s game was an actual Conf game vs a team with a winning record. We will have several blowouts in SEC play since the bottom half of the league is awful. Again if we put 130 on them today but a starter gets hurt is it worth it? It’s 2020(Covid) the NCAA tourney committee will not keep a team out because they did not get some cupcake games in.

If things go as I think they will
play the starters for 3-4 minutes and get a 12+ pt lead
sub in your role players and deep bench and give them minutes and see if they can stretch the lead
sub in your starters sparingly just enough to keep their muscles twitching (I would do this if there was any type of run made by UNCG, so their minutes are worth it

and finish the game on a high note, if at all challenged

Oh and Free Emily!

Did you miss UConn's game with Massachusetts Lowell they are not a conference team and definitely a cupcake. They also had Quinnipiac scheduled but was cancelled. The Big East is no where near the conference the SEC is.. Right now I only see three bad SEC teams LSU. Vanderbilt, and Auburn. Every team in the SEC is ranked in the top 100 except Auburn and LSU. Plus yes the games are definitely worth playing as you can let your younger players get some playing time without the fear of losing. In game experience is always great for a player regardless of opponent.

UMass-Lowell was a quick fill in game like today's game for Tennessee is. And are ranked 268. Still a cupcake but not with frosting.
