Game Thread: Tennessee Lady Vols (12-6, 5-1) @ Ole Miss (14-5, 4-2) ESPN 3:00PM EST 01-28-2024.

The rebounding and one of their subs making 9 of 10 shots was the game today. Happens sometimes they shot far better than they have most of the season and most were jump shots not that many layups.
When that one shot banked off hit the front rim and suspended there for an instant then dropped in. I kind of felt they're just hitting things at a higher clip, today was their day. I expected them to bank a 3 in at some point, it may have been our D more than anything, I thought we should have played a little more aggressive and tried for steals the YMCA refs where not calling much unless it happened in front of Coach Yo bench then she called it they blew the whistle. We were not aggressive enough on D never fouled enough to even get them in the bonus.

Our assistants are a joke especially Jon and joy
The two non related party assistant coaches had credentials. They were also replacements considered upgrades from the head coach’s original hires. There are two spots that have remained the same. Might want to look there.

That’s what I’ve been saying, this roster is not good after Rickea and Spear we don’t have much.
Bull-absolutely-S ,,,Jazzy, Jillian, Tamari would all start and PRODUCE for any most teams in the country and most of the teams in the SEC...even the 2nd tier players Sara, Karo, Tess, Kaiya are good enough role players to make most teams.

Its not about the player,,,its about what you get out of those players and are they getting better or moving backwards...a couple of games ago Kaiya was on a forward movement, at the start of the year Jillian looked like the 5-star she was recruited to be, Karo was hitting everything outside and inside, last game or two Sara was coming on strong,,,,then...then comes a game like today where the players can't win it on their own and the coach has to actually coach using tactics and strategies to win it,,,Like: giving the ref a verbal lashing and risk a T to inspire your team and show them you will fight for them as they fight for you,,,call a timeout and give a game-reset,,,etc.

Players take on the persona of their coach,,,and if the coach isn't "growing in the game" the players won't either...

we had 48 seconds and two fouls to give, 3 points down...Coaching 101; call for a foul and call one of your !!!3!!! timeouts during the dead-ball and tell your players what to do...don't just watch them play defense for 26 seconds and then burn timeouts after an uncontested layup makes it a 2 possession game with 22 seconds on theclock

We have party assistants? No wonder we look out of it sometimes

Many issues in the game, including the normal frustrations with starting lineup in both halves that produced horrible layup defense. This was masked in the first quarter by our hot offense but not at the start of the 2nd half. Boy, we desperately need Jillian to step up on defense and rebounding so she could be a potential starter until Key comes in. Even our better defensive lineups were giving up way too many short jumpers.
The rebounding was horrible!!! Only one player with more than 3. This was not just about speed: It was also about hustle. Sometime the OM player would be the shortest among 2 or 3 potential LV rebounders, but they would get it anyway due to effort. Rebounding is supposed to be a LV strength and helps compensate for lousy turnover ratio and lukewarm defense. We will not win many more games if this starts to be a pattern.

On the positive side, it is amazing how quick Spear is modifying her game to penetrate and draw fouls. I initially thought she was a bit on the slow side for a guard, but she keeps passing the guards up and getting fouled by them. I now think she could be a WNBA player if she keeps improving.
When I looked at our schedule pre-season, I thought that this game would be our most likely SEC loss other than SC and LSU. The Rebels are merciless in their effort and got to play at home. I imagine we will be the favorite in the rest of our games besides SC and LSU, though Vandy in Memorial Gym will be a good test. Though the season is not over, it sure was a disappointing loss.

Inconsistent execution on offense and defense in a women's basketball world where the margin for error shrinks every year makes for some painful watches. Ole Miss is not a bad team anymore by any stretch...they had some tournament success last year, Coach Yo has built the program up, and they play hard for her...but they also had quite a few head scratching errors, but then made more plays down the stretch than Tennessee did and here we are again. I don't have any answers about who should or shouldn't be coaching or how many stars the players did have or should have had...but there is no room for consistently flimsy execution anymore in any Power 5 conference, period.

I don’t disagree on starting in the SEC…after LSU and SC, the rest are packaged all the same with a few differences. And those players mentioned aren’t starting at LSU or SC.

Boy howdy. Bless her, it seems to get worse instead of better. Against some teams Strip bumps her head on her ceiling and we really, really need Jill. I'm starting to really worry about her. Combine that with a bad day for TK and we were post toast.

Please help me understand this. They have said this til they are blue in the face but still we have these games. I can't believe it's really lack of hustle or effort exactly. I mean do any of them really not give a sh*t if they get to the ball? Why is our intensity so inconsistent overall though? I want to think it's talent and confidence related and not attitude. Hell if it is attitude, I'll quit worrying so much!

Same here. I figured we could lose this one and one more random road game and go 11-5 and get in. Still do. Except that means no more random bad losses or we really are on the bubble.

It is all about the coaching and not about the players. Players get hot and KJH takes them out and inserts a cold player. She does not call timely timeouts. When the game was close and we needed defense and where was Wynn, one of our best defensive ball players, on the bench. The best ball players she has are Jackson, Spear, Powell, Wynn, Key, and Puckett. She can afford to occasionally put in Tess Darby, Striplin and Hollingshed but only in sub roles and not all three at the same time. It is time for KJH to get real according to the pundits we are on the edge of not making the NCAA. The ladies have three games left they most likely will not win, 2 against South Carolina and 1 against LSU. I feel that they have to win 6 out of the next 9 games to make it to the tournament or it might be the WNIT. I once was a big supporter of KJH but her coaching is not what I hoped it would be.

Rickea was fouled over and over with no call,,,I'd take a T and give the zebra's what for before I'd let it get so far that it affected the players...and it did, the "emergency" just wasn't there at the end of the game.
I said it here before coach J. Getting T,Ed up sends a message to your players that you see what is going on and you have their backs. I have been T,ed and even throw out of game before. As bad as officiating was today we lost the game on the boards

All season long I’ve been saying it’s a shame Talaysia Cooper had to sit out… but after this start to SEC play with the possibility of Jewel Spear returning next season I can’t help but look to the future building around a backcourt with Jewel Spear returning to join Coop, Boyd, Wynn, and possibly Destinee Wells plus the portal.

I hope everyone keeps downing the team for next season and follow their favs off to the WNBA or the next college team because I can’t wait to be here watching these LVs next season.

It is all about the coaching and not about the players.
This is a chicken and egg debate. How about it's both? We just don't have enough truly elite players and our coaching isn't good enough to do more with less so we can win the games that will then bring the elite players. It's a depressing cycle we're stuck in.

Don't gaslight us. It won't work.

So Key and Hollingshead can’t start over Puckett and Striplin but will start with any other team. So I guess Striplin and Puckett will start for any other Sec as well, but whatever we all have our opinions, and I respect yours.

So we're here discussing IF the Lady Vols can even make the Ncaa tourney? My gawd how far this program has fallen. Ranked 7th in the nation at start of year and now not even close to top 25. Kjh has taken what was considered a talented team and done zero with them except make them worse.

When oh when are we going to start Tamari key so we can set the tone on the defensive end right from the opening tip? I get it if she couldn't play but she is and can be a game changer on the defensive end. She has proved that. She's a rim protector and you can have your guards step up and really guard opposing teams' players I'm the perimeter rather than sitting off of them allowing them to get comfortable and grow confidence in their offense from the beginning of the game. Key was a 3-year starter. She's unique because of her size and length. No offense against Karolyn but she is not an SEC post 5 player. She plays the position but is average against other 5 players in this league.
