Garrett Wolfe for Heisman?

It is not an NFL award. It is for the college player that has had the most outstanding year, period! Peyton Manning had a worse year his senior season than he did his junior year. Nobody in here is saying Manning got robbed his junior year. In fact, Peyton had his lowest completion percentage in his career (HS, college, and NFL) during his senior year at UT.
Everyone is forgetting the show Woodson put on against Penn State. Further, he led his team to a National Championship. I love how everyone acts like Woodson has been a bust in the NFL. He's been to multiple Pro Bowls and, a concept foreign to all the Mannings, has played in a Super Bowl.

NIU's Garrett Wolfe ran for 350+ saturday. He has over 1100 yards rushing in 5 games and at his current pace is projected for over 2800 yards this year!

He went for 171 against Ohio State in the first game of the year.

He's 5'7" and about 175.

ESPN.com: Northern Illinois Huskies Player Card
He is good but ESPN doesnt care about guys like this. They only care about the best player on the best team.

PLus he faces the weakest D in the nation. Good though.

I didn't mean to start such controversy. True the MAC isn't a major conference but his O-line isn't major-conf. worthy either.

He also had another 100+ in receiving against OSU.

He will finish the season with more rushing yards and more total yards against OSU than any other back they play this year and that ought to be worth something.

He had more combined yards (285) against OSU than the entire Penn St. team (253) and the entire Cincy team (212) and almost as much as the entire Texas team (326) and Iowa teams (336)!

Some other fun facts:

Wolfe became only the ninth player in Division I-A history to run for 1,000 yards or more in his first five games and his 1,181 yards are the most among those players. Wolfe needs to average 206.7 yards in the Huskies' remaining seven games to break Barry Sanders' NCAA Division I-A single-season rushing record of 2,628 yards set at Oklahoma State in 1988.

Wolfe is averaging 236.2 yards per game -- more than all but six Division I-A teams and 75 yards more than Rutgers' Ray Rice, who is second with 161.2 yards per game. Wolfe is averaging more than 75 yards more than Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson (160.75 yards per game) and more than 90 yards more than West Virginia's Steve Slaton (145.75).

Here are the SIX teams in D-1 with more total rushing yards (as a team) per game than G. Wolfe:

Navy
West Virginia
Air Force
Louisville
UConn
Clemson

The highest ranking SEC team (Ark.) is averaging a full 50 yards a game less than G. Wolfe.

Wolfe's last two games: 25 yards and 45 yards.

Of course, it was against stiff competition, Western Michigan and Temple, respectively.

I have a feeling Iowa is going to hold him under 100...If that happens, he will have to put up almost 200 ypg in his final 3 games to reach the 2,000 yard mark.

I think there is no stronger endorsement of Woodson winning the Heisman than the fact that therealUT and I actually agree he was the rightful winner.

It's like watching Israel and Palestine come together.

I guess nobody wanted to throw up the Garrett Wolfe update, so here goes:

22 carries for 66 yards...He has fallen completely off the ESPN Heisman Watch.

IMO it was cute they had him on there when I didn't feel he had an argument to be. I like the kid, but ... you can't win it playing in the MAC.

Not to be redundant, however, I had forgotten my Wolfe update this week.

16 attempts, 54 yards, 0 TDs

Man, did he like break his leg or something?

How can you run for 185 on OSU then 25 on W. Michigan.

I saw the OSU game, it wasn't all backups, and even if it was, I would take the Buckeye backups over W. Michigans all time defense.

No injuries and Mr. Wolfe will most definitely not make it to 2,000 yards at this pace.

I know he was over-hyped but think about this statement: He won't make it to 2000 yards at this pace!

I mean give the guy a break - there are 119 or so D-1 teams each with multiple running backs -- how many even break 1000 in a year? This guy's accomplishments this year and in his career are impressive.

He still leads the NCAA in ypg. He's still averaging 6.7 ypg (3rd in the country). He's scored 14 TD's and is 3rd in the NCAA in scoring. His worst rushing year was over 1500 yards (he's a little over 1500 right now).

Kinda like when Tee Martin broke the record for consecutive completions and some sports analyst made a comment to the effect of "well, look who he did it against "(it was S. Carolina). Nevermind the fact that every QB in the history of the NCAA played games against mid-level opponents.

Yeah but when you run for 25 yards on Western Michigan...

I disagree. I mean, using that logic, Brian Shay should be considered a great running back. It should not matter that he played D-II (maybe III) ball. After all, he holds the all time career rushing record in NCAA football.

Wolfe's performance against Ohio State was impressive. However, after that, I can't say I am all that awe struck with 300 yard rushing performances against Buffalo. Auburn's 3rd string tailback rushed for over 150 against Buffalo (and he was only in the game for a quarter!)

Wolfe's achievements need to be viewed in perspective. He might turn out to be a good back in the NFL, however, right now he is a running back that was able to take advantage of some terrible defenses (understatement of the year) and a relaxed Ohio State defense.

If it is so easy to run in the MAC, why isn't their a 2000 yard rusher every year? For that matter, why isn't there a 2000 yard rusher in the WAC, MAAC, MEAC, CUSA, etc. etc. etc.

Well, Wolfe broke his 4 game sub 100 yard rushing streak with a 203 yard performance...against Central Michigan.

Alright G. Wolfe!

Barely leading Slaton now with 157.82 per game (Slaton at 157.80). Has 1736 total yards with one game to go. Averaging 6.63 per carry (3rd; 2nd among RB's - WVU's Pat White is first in ypc at 8.26; Slaton 2nd at 7.74). Pretty good considering teams are putting 9 guys in the box.

He also leads the nation in all-purpose yards.

He set the NIU all time rushing record last night. NIU has had two other rushers come close to the 2000 yard mark. One was LeShon Johnson who was actually supposed to come to UT but had some academic difficulties (we got Charlie Garner instead!). He needed about 120 or so to hit 2000 in his last game but Miss St. held him to about 70 yards. More recently, Michael Turner had 1900+ in his Senior year (including over 100 against Bama in NIU's victory over Mike Shula's Tide). That NIU team finished 10-2 with road wins over Maryland and Alabama but did not receive a bowl bid (a travesty).
