Speaking of game-winning shots, anyone old enough to remember this one?

I was there!

I was 8 years old at the time and with my parents, who would separate and divorce a year later. I remember seeing people leaving Stokely after we turned the ball over with 3 seconds left under the basket.

A few things I remember from back then ....

1) American U. was very good. Coached by Gary Williams, who would later coach at Boston College, Ohio State and win the 2002 National Championship at Maryland. If I remember correctly, they had beaten Georgetown.

2) The other two teams in the Vol Classic that year were California and Wyoming. In the first game that night, Cal also beat Wyoming on a last second shot. We arrived just in time to catch it. Tennessee blew out Cal in the championship game. Wyoming beat American in the consolation game.

3) Unfortunately, that may have been Gary Carter's last game. He and Ed Littleton were declared academically ineligible soon after. That's a shame too. That would have been DeVoe's best team. It was a good team anyway.

Good times. Great memories.

I remember the game but wasn’t there. I must have been listening to Ward on radio because I lived in Decatur Ga at the time and don’t think it was on TV. Also remember being devastated when Carter was kicked off team.

I also was listening to the legend John Ward call this play as a 16 year old. Unbelieveable play by Carter.

Listened on a station in Fayetteville after having moved to Huntsville that fall. 1st Vol Classic I had missed since 1972 and definitely the best opening round.

I Was there. Got home really early
Sports Illustrated used to have a section called "Making a List." They would rank the Top Ten Best/Worst from various categories. They ranked the 1992 Duke vs Kentucky Elite 8 game as the best college basketball game ever .... I don't remember where the Tennessee vs Temple game from December of 1973 fell, but I do remember seeing it in the Top Ten of their "worst college basketball games ever" list.

I was a senior at UT living out in the Bearden area (Timbers West apartments) at the time. Wasn't at the game because students were on Christmas Break. Heard the great John Ward call on the radio.

I was there sitting in the balcony! I've probably been to over 200 men's games in my lifetime, including the 1987 Tony White 51 point against Auburn, the 2006 Chris Lofton over Kevin Durant Texas game, and the 2010 win over Kansas. I passed on an opportunity to go to the 2010 win over Kentucky, which I still regret to this day.

I wasn't there. But, back in the day, the Knoxville PBS station would replay the entire game on a delay. I would avoid the radio, and watch the replay like it was a live game. I remember thinking "this is the most Tennessee thing ever" to lose to American University, and being mad that I stayed up half the night to watch that mess, then losing my mind when Carter hit that shot!

I remember it well...my dad and I were listening on the radio at neighbor's house. I thought of that one, Lofton's shot vs Winthrop, and prob the all timer, Higgins' heave vs that Jarrett Jack/Cris Bosh GaTech team in early 2000's as far as similar game winning shots
