Gary Danielson retiring after 2025

Well okay then.

I'll take a moment to say something good about Gary Danielson.

If there's something silly going on in the game, he will definitely talk about it. Example: I feel like he was instrumental in getting the NCAA to change their targeting rule when it first came out. The way it first came out was the refs would make a call on the field, and then they'd review it in the booth to either uphold or overturn the ejection. Initially, even if the ejection was overturned (and the player could still remain in the game), the refs would STILL march off a 15-yard penalty. That was silly, and Gary railed on this illogical process, and rightfully so. The NCAA changed this for the very next season. Nowadays, if the booth review determines a hit was not ejection-worthy, then the penalty also gets waived off.

He's also repeatedly highlighted the fake injuries going on, and uses replays to highlight this stuff during the game. Whenever they bring in a retired official (Gene Steratore?) to explain a bad call, Gary really grills him on the judgement of the on-field call.

Gary is good at breaking down what offenses are trying to do in real time, and he was totally enthusiastic about whatever SEC game he called. I also appreciated his self-depreciating humor when he'd candidly talk about his shortcomings as a player.

Did he get things wrong? Of course! Don't we all? Was he biased? It sure seemed like it, but that didn't really bother me. After all, as the T-Shirt says, it's "Vols Against All Y'all" and I include biased announcers like Danielson and Keith Jackson and Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler and all those biased guys into that category and I just don't let it ruin my day.
