I watched the UF Football preview last night on Sun Sports with analysis being given by Gator replay commentators. I found some points of interest for Vol fans:

1. The Gators will reclaim the Swamp under UM. The home losses under Zook are gone.

2. They feel that they have more talent on their team than anyone on their schedule with the exception of LSU.

3. The biggest challenges for them this season will be the road trip to LSU.

4. The winner of the UF vs. UGA game will decide who will play in Atlanta for the SEC title.

5. Tennessee has a talented QB that could cause the Gators problems, but the Gators will be ready, and beat the Vols since they have the Vols in the Swamp.

6. Their biggest game of the season will be against South Carolina, and Steve Spurrier.

7. Wyoming isn't the normal cupcake like the Citadel that the Gators normally play. The Gators should be careful.

8. UM's offense isn't a system but a philosophy that he adapts to the players on his roster, and Leak and company will have no trouble since he is such a great coach.

9. The 4th quarter collapses of last season won't happen this season under UM since they have such a great coach now.

10. The Gator secondary will be ready to play even with the inexperience and injuries.

11. The UF program has more optimism than ever before. They are expecting to win the SEC East while playing for the SEC title, and a chance at the National Title this season.

I think most of these statements are wishful thinking considering UF has yet to play a game under UM. I can't wait for the season to start, and bring the UF homers back to reality.

For some reason, every time I read UM for Urban Meyer, my brain thinks University of Miami and I think "What does Miami have to do with anything??" My bad.

Great preview!!!

I am not scared of Florida at all, I am worried about our team making mistakes and being timid and not going for the kill.
I know the Vols have the better team.
The road thing doesn't bother me at all either.

Yea, this comment by UF people is just an opinion and wishful thinking.

A coach can't make a team play hard in the 4th quarter. The coach can put them in position to succeed by calling the right plays, having a good scheme, and making sure they are in fact conditioned for 4 plus quarters of hard-hitting football. But, he can't make them play harder in the last part of the game, that is up to the players to do, and that usually happens with experience and maturity on the part of the players.

Actually depth has been more of an issue the past couple seasons on D...that, accompanied with the fast pace offense going 3 and out several series in a row.

I don't understand the South Carolian game being the biggest on the schedule. If that game were at home and it were Spurrier's homecoming, might be fun for that unusual angle.

But, in reality, its South Carolina. I mean, come on.

Right now, I feel like the two games looming as biggest are UT and LSU. UT gets the edge in my book because its an SEC East team, its early in the season, and its a team that Florida has been dominated by on the line of scrimmage in the last few years.

The key to long term Gator success is winning some line of scrimmage battles and UT will be the biggest test on that this year.

would it help if instead of calling him UM, we gave him initials of Coach UM-----> CUM :D
is that better?! I certainly think so!!

Everything ive read or heard is about the same. UF beats UT because its in the Swamp. LSU is said to have the most talent in the SEC, But they turn around and say UF playing SOS in SC will be UF's toughest road game?

I'll admit UF vs SC could be interesting, But when did going into Williams-Brice become more intemidating than Tiger Stadium against a top tier SEC team?

i love how these experts just know what teams will do. how the hell should they know if leak can run this offense. or that usc is unstoppable. and why is so many ppl picking ohio st to go to the rose bowl? who the hell is there qb? what makes this lsu team different from last years that lost 3 games and should have lost another to oregon st.?

no knows jack. all this preseason stuff is to get our juices flowing. it works but i cant stand all the "this will happen" and "i gurantee that"

lets play the games on the field and not in our minds or on paper.

hell even ut has all these big expectations. if we slip up i can see us starting 2-3 if we dont come ready to play. our schedule sucks and we will have to play our butts off every game. and that includes uab.

anyway enough of my yapping go vols

Here are my concerns vs Florida:

1. Meyer sends in 5 WR finds a LB matched up against a WR and exploits it repeatedly. I would really like to see Fulmer and Co. use 5 DB and 2 LB (Take Mitchell out and bring in maybe Morley or Jonathon Wade).

2. Meyer is gonna have 4 or 5 wide receivers and is gonna exploit whoever is weakest in man to man coverage in UT secondary. I imagine that will be Stewart, he got burned a lot last year against Auburn. If we have one weak link in coverage, one guy who cant cover well man to man Meyer is gonna exploit it.

Stewart got burned 2 years ago against auburn....he didnt play last year.....that was TWO years ago tho.....and we can always zone em up a little to throw them off....plus if we get pressure....he wont have time to find that receiver...

Leak isn't a tall QB, he can't run all that great and history says he get's frustrated and flustered when he gets pressured. A 5 wideout set requires time for the play to develop and takes away your back to help block. No way Mahelona and co. will give him the time he needs to execute this offense. It will be a long day in the swamp for the gators.

UT's DB's playing man coverage is a bad thing even against UK and Vandy as we saw last season. Against UF's WR's and Leak's accurate passing, I would play a lot of zone to take away the big play, and press coverage at the goaline and short yardage.

This is exactly why I said on another thread that the UT game is going to be the biggest for UF this year -- give us some idea of whether UM has toughened up the O line. Early reports are that the line is doing well, though you don't know yet if they can handle changes at the line in the spread option during a game. I imagine UM is trying to keep it to 5, maybe 6 different blocking schemes for the first couple of games, running all plays out of that.

Look for short passes to start the season with crossing routes and downfield blocking.

Huge question mark for defense. Very little depth and experience. I do think UT will be able to outrush Florida.

Does it really matter if it was one year ago or 2? The reality is, the last time he started he got burned a lot, and lost his starting job to Jason Allen. If you were Meyer, and you were looking for a player to exploit in man to man coverage wouldnt you pick a player who you know has a history of getting burned?

Second, how do you play a zone against 5 wide outs?? All Meyer has to do is flood the zone with 4 or 5 wr's and he will score 50 against us. I really hope we dont try to play zone.

Its a given we need to pressure the Qb, I hope are coaching staff comes up with more then just that. I would like to see them play 5 DB against Florida and take one of the linebackers out. Then a 5 wr set dosent give you a bad match-up.

Florida scares me as a team. I think Meyer has a lot of good ideas and good athletes, and if we dont come up with a great game plan and play well we will get beat. I'm not one of those touting the Myth of Meyer, personally I think he'll be a good coach in this league.

i think the dean of sec coaches and chief know how to set up for florida and get our d ready. lets quit playing arm chair qb and let them do the work. half of our linebackers played coner in highschool anyway. they are all pure athletes and they will be fine.
