Gators vs Vols

Yeah, he lost to Mateen, Mo Pete, and that Sparty group in the 2000 championship game.

In your defense, it really wasn't a very memorable game.
And he got notably outcoached by Butler's coach (don't know his name) in the early rounds and only won in OT because the officials turned on Butler with some absolutely horrendous calls. Should have been an embarassing out early, not a trip to the finals.

OK - I'm going with 2000 as another fluke thanks to a gift from the zebras. My hesitancy is behind me now.

I cannot agree that Donovan has never been a good coach for the Gators. He did have quite a string of NCAA appearances going until recently and I think its more than a little bit of luck that he had those two national c-ships. There have been plenty of coaches with big time talent who never got it done, much less twice. You've got to give him some credit.

But, I am still wondering about that whole episode with the Magic and whether he is nearly as focused as he was 3-4 years ago. Granted, the talent level is not currently nearly what it was then, but there have been some serious lapses it would seem. Obviously, he gets some blame for the South Carolina collapse (not all of it, but some). I also thought that the gameplan for the UT game was dubious.
with the talent they had, compared to the field, he should have won both of those titles going away. To his credit, he did, but Pearl could have done that.

I think that may have been Thad Matta.

Butler has had a neat coaching tree with Barry Collier, Thad Matta, Todd Lickliter, and now Brad Stevens.

matchups don't begin to explain our beating their national title teams. There is no excuse for them to have lost any of those 4 games.

Any of the 4?
UT was one of the two best SEC teams UF faced in both of those seasons. I don't think it's surprising at all that the '07 Vols split with them. Our blowout win was the best we played that entire year, and it was in front of our best home atmosphere of the year.

It's reasonable to think the '06 Gators shouldn't have been in a position to lose at the end both times. The best explanation, besides Lofton, IMO, is that Bruce's style matches up well with Billy's Gators. Just like LSU seems to match up really well with Bruce's Vols.

I just checked wikipedia. It was Collier in the 2000 NCAAs. Matta was only at Butler for one season, 2000-01.

Yeah, I knew Matta was only the head coach at Butler for one season....couldn't remember if the season in reference was Collier's last or Matta's only.

To credit Donovan, that '06 team was not ranked in the pre season. I think he did a great job of developing those players.

Didn't Florida win one of the 4 games against the Vols during their 2 national championship seasons?

I recall them hammering a Lofon-less Vols squad in Gainesville.

yep, I doubt we would've won that game with Lofton anyway.

BPV said UF's NC teams shouldn't have lost any of their four games against UT, with the talent they had.

I did say that. None of those 4 games should have ever been open for debate. They won 1 big and we won the other 3. My bad if I led someone to believe otherwise.

I think the conversation was moving along smoothly between the smart folks in this thread. I just got a little confused...my reading comprehension is still a work in progress - but it's all clear now.

I'm gonna mosey on over to the endzone for a while. In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.

stick around, this thread needs you badly. I've botched it about 7 times and you've set me straight every time.
