Gene Chizik Will be Fired Tomorrow

They did it right...
We...NOT SO MUCH!

Not really. Cam Newton was far more responsible for the 2010 national championship than Chizik was.

Oh, and there's a report on Auburn's 24/7 site that says that Chizik will most likely be fired, at least according to Football Rumor Mill. I don't have a 24/7 account, so I can't say for sure.

Chizik has been awful this year, but in regards to Chizik vs. Dooley, some perspective is in order. Auburn's schedule has been tougher than Tennessee's (up to this point).

Auburn has thus far played only one team outside the power conferences: Louisiana-Monroe. And La-Monroe is leading the Sun Belt. Auburn beat them. They have New Mexico State and Alabama State coming up, so they should win at least 3 games.

Tennessee has played its two cupcakes already: Georgia State and Akron. We beat NC State, but that's really no more impressive than beating Louisiana-Monroe.

Auburn played LSU, Clemson, and Vandy close. We played Georgia, Miss State, and SC close.

I'm not really sure that Auburn has played much worse than us. We've looked slightly better against good teams, but if Auburn had played our schedule, they'd probably be 3-5 or 2-6.

I think at the end of the year, our record will be better than Auburn's. And I do think we're better than them. But Chizik hasn't been that much worse than Dooley --- he's just had a tougher schedule thus far.

Take a look at Auburn's schedule and try to discern what Dooley's record would be. Best-case scenario would be 4-4, but it could be as bad as 1-7 (depending on whether UT could beat Arkansas, Ole Miss, Vandy, and La-Monroe).

Auburn:
Clemson, Miss. State, Monroe, LSU, Ark., Ole Miss, Vandy, A&m

Tenn:
NCState, GaSt, Florida, Akron, UGA, Miss State, Bama, Carolina.

I'll give you Clemson slightly over NC State. I'll even allow Monroe to cancel out Akron/Ga State. Miss. State is a common opponent.

Comparing the 4 remaining SEC games:

You think Ark/Ole Miss/Vandy/A&M are better than Florida/UGA/Bama/Carolina?

Course not. Just a thinly veiled effort to Bash Dooley. Auburn has not played the type of teams we have. Regardless, we could beat them fairly easy. They would never touch Bray or our wideouts. They are bad on offense. Our d has looked bad but they are not capable of exploiting it.

I'm not even using that to defend Dooley, I've folded my cards on him. Preseason, I thought we needed to see at least one, maybe two wins from Fla/UGA/Miss State/Carolina/Bama. I don't hate the guy and respect what he's done, but I think its time for both parties to move on.

But I don't see the AU has played a tough schedule argument at all.

Nope.

I think La-Monroe is better than NC State.

Akron and Ga State were both cupcakes. Auburn has had no cupcake games yet (they will in the upcoming weeks). If you exclude the cupcakes, Dooley is 1-5 and Chizik is 1-7. Not a huge difference.

My point is merely that if Auburn had played UT's schedule, they'd likely have the exact same record. Auburn would have beaten Akron and Ga State. It's fair to argue that they could have beaten NC State if they beat La-Monroe.

Would UT have the same record as Auburn if they played their schedule? I don't know, but they'd certainly be no better than 4-4 and maybe even as bad as 1-7. Do I think Tennessee would beat Arkansas and Ole Miss? I'm not sure to be honest. I definitely don't think they'd beat A&M or Clemson. Vandy is a toss-up as well. For that matter, La-Monroe might be able to beat UT.

As I said in the last post, I think Tennessee is slightly better, but it's not the blowout that people like to portray it as. If Auburn had UT's schedule, they'd probably be 3-5, as well. If UT had Auburn's schedule, my best guess is that they'd either be 3-5 or 2-6.

Did not read past this.

I'm sorry to hear about your reading difficulties.

Louisiana-Monroe is ranked higher in most of the computer rankings than NC State. The ACC is weak this year. La-Monroe is leading the SunBelt. They are both middle-tier I-A teams, but in a head-to-head match-up, I'd slightly favor La-Monroe.

I'd listen to them being even with NC State...but whatever you do, don't use computer rankings to back up your claim.

They have Bama at 7. Texas at 17.

End of discussion.

Computer rankings...lulz

lulz at being confident that Auburn could easily beat Akron and Ga State, and even bigger lulz to think they could stay close to NC State.

We could choose our point total against Auburn's defense.

No, "they" don't.

Computer ranking comparison

That site has 70 different computer rankings. Approximately ONE (out of 70) has Alabama at #7. The average ranking for Alabama is 1.67 and the median ranking is 1.0. This is like saying one renegade pollster constitutes the entirety of human rankings. Aside from that one bizarre ranking, no other computer has them ranked under 3.

This is simply ignorance on your part. You believe Louisiana-Monroe isn't good because you haven't really heard of them. You assume NC State is better because they are in the ACC. But La-Monroe is leading the SunBelt and the ACC isn't actually that good.

Not saying La-Monroe is a top 25 team. Merely suggesting that they might be better than NC State, which is at best, a very inconsistent mid-tier team in a mid-tier conference.

P.S. You might not like the computer rankings, but you haven't even backed up your argument at all. I'd use human rankings, as well, if they went to the top 60 teams --- but they don't.

I don't know about Akron but Georgia St. is a horrible FCS team. Even Auburn would beat them handily.

If Chizik is fired it won't be until December. They owe him 10 million if he gets canned before Dec. 1. That amount drops to 7.5 million on Dec. 1. They won't win more games this year if he is fired early so why blow off 2.5 million for nothing.

You seriously want to have this big of a debate about the merits of NC State vs. Monroe just to prop up your theory that Auburn's played a tougher schedule?

Ignorance? Stop it. I've heard of them. Watched them play 4 games. They played great at Arkansas...and handled teams on their level. Excuse me for not being in awe.

Both schools have played somewhat comparable mediocre schedules

Monroe's standout win? Arkansas? WKU?

NC State? Florida State.

I don't want to put much more effort into this.

And FWIW, Bama's computer average in the BCS is 3...not 1.67. Computer polls are garbage.

Can't see canning a coach after a national title, even if it was purchased. Seems like you get at least 4 years if you win a title??

"Purchased" or not, the NCAA was in Auburn for 8 months and found NOTHING. No major or minor violations. How many schools come out untouched after the NCAA camps out at for 3/4 a year? Sketchy? Absolutely. Did we pay Cam? Maybe, but at least if we did we did it good enough to get away with it lol. But Auburn came out of the biggest media witch hunt in history "clean." The only problem is Auburn's reputation was totally shattered, and if you dont think that the bama controlled media had anything to do with that then your crazy. And you better believe once UT starts threatening bama's supremacy again you will start to hear more rumors from across state lines. But thats a topic for another day, just had to vent.

In regards to the coaching situation, its hard to believe any coach has done less with more than Chizik. Auburn had one "perfect storm" season with 2 of the best players in college football and 28 seniors. With exception to 2010, we've had 3 top 10 classes in a row, absolutely no player development, and consistent problems on and off the field. Along with a downright disgusting product on the field. As bad as Vol fans think they have it, it is a much worse predicament in Auburn. UT would absolutely demolish Auburn. As bad as UT's defense is, Auburn's offense ranks at the bottom of just about every statistical category. Auburn's defense hovers right around the 90's in rankings too, so I think UT could literally pick the score. This is my first semester in grad school at UT and I have watched every AU and UT game, and the vols at least have looked solid in just about every game. With the exception of the bama game, UT has been in a position late in the 4th quarter to win every game... and choked... but at least the vols have shown flash at times, Auburn not so much. That being said, the fact that the vols continually make mistakes late in games is a sign of poor coaching. I think both UT and AU need to, and will be, searching for coaches very shortly. I hope that both schools can make big time hires are return to the top of the SEC. Whats good for UT is good for AU, and vice versa.

Bump.

How much heat did I take for saying that Tennessee wasn't that much better than Auburn a few weeks ago?

Auburn is now 3-8. Tennessee is 4-7. Tennessee's best win was against NC State. Auburn's best win was against La-Monroe. La-Monroe and NC State are about equally as good.

Auburn only has a worse record, because Tennessee has played more cupcakes. In a match-up between the two, I do think Tennessee would win, but it would be close.

Let's hope we can at least beat Kentucky in the Futility Bowl.

For the record, Kentucky has the highest quality win between UK, UT, and Auburn. Kentucky beat Kent State, which is 10-1. If there's any evidence that even the worst team in the SEC would have a winning record in many other conference, that is it right there. Auburn might seem terrible, but you put them in the ACC or Big East and they are maybe 6-6. You put them into a mid-major conference like the SunBelt, and they are maybe 8-4 or 9-3. Same deal with Tennessee and Kentucky.

Schedule is everything. SEC teams still get consistently screwed by pollsters that ignore this. A one-loss Alabama team is much more impressive than a zero-loss Kansas State team (that now has one loss).
