Genealogy - who are your ancestors?

Lol. Carl we may have more in common than where we live. My dad was from Jackson County. Granville to be exact.

It was my dad's side of the family as well. My grandfather lived around the corner from us growing up so we hardly ever went up to visit his other relatives...I don't think my dad wanted us around them much. They were a strange lot.

My grgr grandfather is driving me crazy. I've been trying to track him down for nearly 2 decades, and I'm no closer than the day I started. He appeared in Smith County TN in the 1860 census, living in the home of another family. He was 14 at the time. No trace of him in 1850, and no clue who his parents were.

Research the family he is with. At that time it was common to end up living with a relative, either older sibling or even an aunt/uncle. It was also common to live on a neighbor's farm as hired help.

Old newspaper abstracts can be a fountain of information as they were full of local gossip and happenings.

Remember as well that county borders changed a lot back then and in the case of Smith, several times starting in 1837. Ancestors may not have moved, but they ended up in a different county due to boundaries moving around. Research Macon, formed in 1842 and DeKalb, formed in 1854. I'd check in both old and new Putnam along with Jackson and after 1870, add in Trousdale.

Good luck with your brick wall ancestor..it took me almost 20 years to conquer mine. I had to wait for online info to get caught up..lol
