George Quarles leaving Maryville to be OC at Furman

Lots is padded wins beating low level competition.

That's ridiculous. Same ole, same ole. "He's only winning because he's in 4A", he moves up to 5A and wins. "He's only winning because he's in 5A", he moves to 6A and wins. Quit downplaying his accomplishments.

From 2003 to 2013 he was the winningest coach in the country for that decade. He won state championship year after year...but he's padding his stats. Good grief.

Amen!!! Of course you criticized the great GQ, so prepare for wrath. Certainly, his record is impressive, but he fell into an ideal situation, much like Rankin at Alcoa.

Alcoa schedules 5A and 6A teams regularly. I've never seen Quarrles go out of his way to schedule one of those out of state games.

Name me a team in this entire state that he's ducked or dodged? So he's only beaten the Sisters of the poor because he doesn't play out of state games? Lmao.

Thanks George :eek:lol:
Will never know how good his teams were without challenging the best. Teams like BA, MBA and Ensworth beat on each other and play out of state teams to get better and measure their progress. Hell BA going from 1A to 6A winning titles caused the public private split. Even Ravenwood played BA not long ago. Oakland and Ensworth had some good regular season games. George is a great coach no doubt. Fulton and Alcoa maybe Kingsport DB are their toughest games until the title game every year.

Maryville has never gone out of their way to play anyone they don't have to play. He could schedule some of the Nashville prep schools. A team as prolific as Maryville should have played an out of state power house in his tenure. Happens all the time with elite programs.

You mean he left Maryville HS where he was both AD and HC to just be a position coach at Furman? That's weird. I doubt he is getting much of a pay raise - if any.

some folks live for things other than money, though, ya know?

No sir. I played at BA in the late 80's for Flatt. That's a coach who took on all comers from all over the state. We went to Pascagoula Mississippi to take on the 6A powerhouse in 1988 and won. Played Alabama and Kentucky schools to fill the schedule. We played anyone who wanted some. I don't think Maryville even played the best in the state. I would love to see Maryville play BA, MBA and other schools they play like Louisville Trinity. Even Oakland, Ravenwood, White Haven in the regular season. 10 wins go to 8 just like that.

People refused to play BA because of the recruiting.

In the 80's it was fear. In the late 90's the excuse turned to recruiting. They didn't do anything other private schools didn't do. Maryville has kids on their team out of their school zone. Kids use relatives addresss to play there. Much the same. BA recruits like Maryville

And the same two teams we beat in the championship game in 87 and 88 beat us in 86 and 89.AE- Von Reeves and Leroy Thompson in 86 and Alcoa-Billy Williams in 89. Very good competition in AA then and they played solid football.

With Furman being a private school we may never know his pay, not sure if Furman releases that info.

Also, he's gotta be looking at the big picture. A couple of solid seasons at Furman and he goes from position coach there to OC there or somewhere else in FCS maybe, and/or then maybe position coach at lower level D1 school, and then who knows.

Also, since he was at Maryville for 22 years, he has 22 years in the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System. Should things not work out at Furman, he could easily get a job at another TN high school and put in 8 more years to earn his full retirement benefits. TCRS is a defined benefit plan and his service at any TCRS employer transfers over.

Best of luck to him and hope he makes a big splash.

A 250-16 record at any level is super impressive, especially considering 7 of those losses came during his first 2 seasons. Just insane.

How old is Quarles, anyway? I've seen him at the title games and he doesn't look that old at all. This may just be the bottom step of the ladder for him.

He's mid to upper 40s
