German Insurance Companies Demand Perilous Playgrounds So That Kids Can Learn About Risk

Why would insurance companies demand this? Aren't they going to be subject to making payouts when the kids hurt themselves on the rottweiler run and razor-go-round?

explained in the article - they'll better understand risk and be better at avoiding it through life

+1 for recognizing the horrors of the razor go round

Explained kind of. They dont seem to be considering the actuarial risk of having more injured children on the playgrounds. Also not clear whether or how playground experiences would translate to later life experiences.

No, this wouldn’t fly here in the US.

I like the thought, it goes hand in hand with my belief that if we let boys fight in elementary school we’d have less violence.

Worked for me . I learned that you don’t go down the 20ft shiney mirror slide in the south during the summer , and I’m semi non violent now . 😂

If every school taught martial arts as its PE course, that would probably help.

Edit: it’s been a few years, so my German is probably a little rough around the edges

injured kids are cheap I guess - a mid 20s person who never faced the reality of their physical limitations buying a sport bike or jumping off a balcony has a bigger liability.

I'm guessing that's the thinking - later, more serious risky behavior is lessened if you learned limitations earlier on in life.

I imagine they have data showing change in risky behavior as adults is correlated with de-risking childhood activities. I agree that actuarial risk drives their decision making so I'm guessing they've run the numbers.

"Spiritually soft children". Lol.

Is that what geistig means? I thought it was “mentally.”
I have no idea.

That's what Google translate spit out and I laughed out loud at the thought of German insurance bigwigs lamenting their spiritually soft children.

I also recognized in the excellent movie Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid the boat named "Immer Essen" was "always eat(ing)".

my favorite quote from the Steve Martin movie

I hadn't seen a body put together like that since I'd solved the case of the Murdered Girl with the Big Tits.

I learned you don’t take your hand off the swing chain when you’re in the backswing. And not to run my mouth to the bigger older kids.

I’m betting the first lesson was easier learned than the second 😂

I never quite learned the second….I didn’t necessarily run my mouth, but got whipped quite a bit by the bigger older kids anyway. The stick and poke chumps would just start it….
