Get Osama Bin Laden before I leave office, orders George W Bush - Times Online

President George W Bush has enlisted British special forces in a final attempt to capture Osama Bin Laden before he leaves the White House.
Defence and intelligence sources in Washington and London confirmed that a renewed hunt was on for the leader of the September 11 attacks. “If he [Bush] can say he has killed Saddam Hussein and captured Bin Laden, he can claim to have left the world a safer place,” said a US intelligence source.
Bush arrives in Britain today on the final leg of his eight-day farewell tour of Europe. He will have tea with the Queen and dinner with Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah before holding a private meeting with Brown at No 10 tomorrow and flying on to Northern Ireland.
The Special Boat Service (SBS) and the Special Reconnaissance Regiment have been taking part in the US-led operations to capture Bin Laden in the wild frontier region of northern Pakistan. It is the first time they have operated across the Afghan border on a regular basis.

This administration has the worst public relations department that our Nations Capitol has ever seen.

Just think what will happen if they catch him now. The conspiracy kooks will pop out of every hole and proclaim that they waited until now just for political reasons.

Why not, he will be caught and it will bounce McCain ahead of Obama because Obama will be forced to play it down and people will hate him for it!

In my opinion we have known where he was for at least the past year or two and just gathering intell from intercepted communications, we could have him within 2 months as soon as it is ordered. Think of it this way, we could capture or kill him and then he is martyr for the cause and the followers will grow and then the evil west will grow to even a higher level of "evil" or we can stand by intercept intell and prevent further events from happening and I do think he will be brought in before the election, and in GW's mind that will secure his legacy and 50 years from now he thinks people will look back and think he was a good prez.....even though we know...waddaya think am I crazy?

Who cares. UBL is better dead -- martyr or not....ask anyone in the defense department or intelligence community. I still find it amazing we can find Saddam in a hole in the ground in all of Iraq and can't find UBL in Afghanistan -- where they are supposed to be helping us look for him.

Power Line: What's Going On Here?

The TImes writes:
President George W Bush has enlisted British special forces in a final attempt to capture Osama Bin Laden before he leaves the White House. Defence and intelligence sources in Washington and London confirmed that a renewed hunt was on for the leader of the September 11 attacks. “If he [Bush] can say he has killed Saddam Hussein and captured Bin Laden, he can claim to have left the world a safer place,” said a US intelligence source. ***
One US intelligence source compared the “growing number of clandestine reconnaissance missions” inside Pakistan with those conducted in Laos and Cambodia at the height of the Vietnam war. ***
A Pentagon source said US forces were rolling up Al-Qaeda’s network in Pakistan in the hope of pushing Bin Laden towards the Afghan border, where the US military and bombers with guided missiles were lying in wait. “They are prepping for a major battle,” he said.
The main operations in Pakistan are being undertaken by Delta, the US army special operations unit, and the British SBS.
I've wondered for a long time whether we have had a better idea of bin Laden's whereabouts than has been publicly revealed, and whether we have preferred to leave him at large rather than to capture or kill him. Why could this be the case? Presumably because we have cracked the security surrounding bin Laden and have been able to acquire valuable intelligence by leaving him at large.
This may be what was going on with Mohammed Naeem Noor Khan, the Pakistani whose laptop was seized several years ago, revealing a number of al Qaeda plots. It may be that Khan was bin Laden's link to the outside world, and that bin Laden's instructions to cells around the world were being intercepted by our intelligence agencies. After Khan's capture was made public, it may be that bin Laden's new links to the outside world were likewise penetrated.
This is, as I said above, pure speculation. But the administration's success in preventing new attacks after September 11 has long suggested the possibility of an intelligence coup equal in magnitude to Enigma. If bin Laden's security was penetrated years ago, it would explain why the administration has preferred to leave him at large despite the occasional annoyance of his propaganda missives.
If the Times' report is correct, then perhaps President Bush has decided that al Qaeda is sufficiently degraded, or the intelligence recoverable through bin Laden is no longer sufficiently valuable, so that it makes sense to try to kill or capture him. No doubt President Bush would like to bequeath his successor a world free of both bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. So it's pure speculation, but for what it's worth, I wouldn't be shocked to see bin Laden killed or captured between now and January.

I read powerlineblog too and what they've come up with sounds plausible. Much like local law enforcement leaving small time drug dealers on the street in order to catch the really big fish further up the food chain.

I don't believe in the conspiracies either. 9-11 was perpetrated by Islamic terrorists that used various aspects of our free and open society (and borders) to their advantage.

They already predicted that for the 04 election.

I heard on the radio that obama was quoted saying he wanted to bring him here to stand trial . I dont know if it's true , just something I heard on the radio. Bush seems to want him dead and obama wants to chat with him , maybe even a give him a pardon . Aren't they from the same religion , kind of hard to tell with obama ?:)

If we could kill Usama he'd be dead. Unless the plan was to further embarass him and his rogue cult and make them the ridicule of the muslim world by thwaring most every plot they have thrown at us.
