Get rid of Pearl

He has let the program go and now we have lost to Butler. It is time for UT to cut ties with Pearl before our men's basketball program is in complete ruin. This latest loss is going to drop us from the Top 25, another embarassment to a program that entered the tourney as a #2 seed only to be knocked out during the first weekend. Again, Hamilton needs to show some moxi and get rid of Bruce Pearl, NOW!!!

Another example of my thesis.

"Fans" that only follow and like the football team at UT are MUCH more likely to be "NegaVols" than those that follow all, or most sports at the University of Tennessee. Those people that live and die with every aspect of the University, appreciate what they have more than the ones that only tune in for a few months a year.

Now, as I said elsewhere, that doesn't make either side right or wrong, just different. Both sides are entitled to be fans however they want.

I just find it interesting that seems to be the way this "Fulmerite"/"NegaVol" thing shakes out for the most part.

I would argue strongly against your thesis. In fact, I've seen a lot of people on here paralleling Bruce's success to the possible success of a new football coach. The fact that our Bball fans are starting to see success just makes those same fans wonder why our football program seems to be sliding.

I dislike the fan that is a Vols football fan but lets just say a memphis Bball fan. To me thats not a real fan, a real fan pulls for every team the Vols have.

Yeah, I hear that crap all the time - I'm a Tennessee fan during football season, but I'm a _____ fan during basketball season. It makes me just about as mad as anything does as a fan.

Jordan Howell wouldn't be a contributor in the Atlantic Sun, let alone the SEC. Yet another great legacy left by Buzz Peterson. I hope Bruce just bites the bullet and plays the freshmen. I'd rather see those guys throwing the ball away than Howell shooting it.

Not true. Jordan's thumb injury means he's going to struggle with his shot. He was never recruited to be a point guard, but rather a 3-point gunner off the bench, except that he hasn't exactly lit it up from 3 at any point. (he was even redshirted.)

It's tough for Pearl: pick your poison - you play Ramar, you're gonna get turnovers, but he's obviously much quicker and can cut to the basket and create. If you play Jordan, you're going to get better ballhandling, better half-court sets, but little or no offensive production and, well, he's slow.

And don't even get me started on Marques Johnson.

This is an extremely young team, and there are going to be growing pains. It's entirely possible that Memphis will take UT behind the woodshed, too. My gut feeling, though, is by the time March rolls around, this team will be able to play with just about anybody in the country.

...but will they still be playing late in March if it takes too long to put it all together?

There will be plenty of crow to go around whin this team finds its way, its young but growing , post play must and will improve I like the no quit attitude.

Watching our young, talented, and very short team go up against UNC, along with the experienced and disciplined drubbbing Butler handed us, my focus turned to Pearl as the camera panned to him at times during the games and during time outs. I saw a wise man capable of balancing push with patience in bringing along his very young, talented and inexperienced team. The freshman recruits he brought in I am sure hardly listened to Pearl when he told them that they were about to go on the court against teams and players that are not only able to thrash them, but would in most likelihood do just that unless the Vols played mistake free ball and capitalized on every single opportunity. (Hitting free throws are in the opportunity category!!!!)

Pearl's face had an ever growing, "I told you so." look coupled with a smirk from time to time that I interpreted as: "When we get back on the practice floor these big egos will have diminished with experience by fire rather than by the decibles of my being in their faces screaming at the top of my lungs."

These two thumpings were good because now the highly talented youth on the team will listen to coach intently, and probably even make intelligent inquiries from him.

Even though they got smashed, I believe Pearl gained the credibility from some players he felt he had not gotten out of them? Athletes who proclaim themselves as "GOLDEN BOYS" are much more of a coaching challenge than bringing along average talent.

Did no one else pick up on that "I told you so." look on Pearl's face? Did no one else notice that his usual frantic and frenetic behavior along the bench during the games was toned down somewhere around 75%? Instead of being outraged at his team's performance, I sensed an attitutde of "Okay! Now we can get down to getting some real work done."

I hated the losses, but I noted Pearl was not in his usual form even before our guys let the games get out of hand.:matrix:

Tennessee needs to play some smashmouth BB just like we do most of the time in Football. Anyone can shot a basketball from 22 ft. But how many they gonna hit?? 5-21?? Get inside guys, then play the perimeter. Its like football, there is a fine line between a Pass Heavy or Run Heavy team and a Pass First or Run First team.

Yeah, UT doesn't want to be a team that lives and dies by the three. We don't have enough 3-point shooters to do that. Lofton and Smith are the only two that can hit a high %, even though Chism can hit every now and then.

Agreed. At this point in the season though we are what we are which is a live and die by the three type of team. Crews and Chism definately need work on being able to post up their opponents. Hopefully, Pearl and his staff are making strides in teaching these two in this area. We are young and as hard as it is to watch at times this teams does have its moments that show its true potential. Right now we can't rely on the inside game. Which means we are gonna have to become alot more consistent shooting the 3 and knocking down open shots. Free-throws I gotta believe will get better down the line.

Don't knock him! Butler has shocked everyone and won the NIT tourney and beat some good teams in the process. True the Vols shot terrible. They can do better and hope they don't have those type of games too often. Of course we lost to North Carolina-probably a final 4 team!
