Get Rid Of Selfish Players

With all due respect, imo, this post is kind of a weird and unfair.

Players aren't being "selfish" when they try to score--they are doing what they are supposed to be doing. This kid was unsuccessful Saturday for two basic reasons: 1) He appears to be quite slow for a skill player at this level of competition; and 2) he was either not thoughtful in failing to secure the safety of the ball or he was incredibly clumsy. Selfishness is intentional. Being slow and either careless or awkward is not. He was doing his best.

On the penalty, he was probably caught up trying to make up for the very embarrassing mistake that had occurred. That's why, to be successful, players have to forget the last play (good or bad) and do their level best on the next play to succeed at sports.

To me, it appears obvious that a significant number of the players on this team are not high D1 talents. It is not their "fault" that they are here and they are, generally, doing their best to compete. The players, All American or not, are VFLs and they deserve our respect. The problem with this team should not be laid at the feet of the individual players. It should be laid at the feet of the professionals who whiffed on their recruit evaluations and those who brought them here and then failed to prepare them to play.

At this very early date, I am not willing to attribute very much of those failures to the current coaching staff. This staff gives every indication of being competent, particularly in comparison to the history of the last 10 years. More important, no one should be pointing the finger of failure at individual kids who are doing their best to succeed and coming up short. Just my opinion.

Pope is one of those Butch recruits that shouldn’t be playing in the SEC in the first place.

He should have secured the ball better.

Selfish? NO. Bone headed? YES
I'd like to see Pruitt show him some discipline but not over do it. Play the young guys as much as possible to develop them and go get your own players next couple to 3years. Then we'll know about Pruitt. This year will be difficult to guage the future.

Maybe the running backs should go ahead and fall before they are about to be tackled so we don't fumble.

Welp, that's exactly what JG did when diving for the first down stick with no Gator within 5 yards of him. Not sure what that was all about.

This team needs a purge like a person whose been constipated for a month, about half the team should find a other hoby

Another hobby that is, sorry I'm on my phone
This is stupid, the only thing this kid did wrong was not secure the ball good enough. He had a chance to help his team score. He tried, which more than what a whole lot of this team did Saturday. Had he scored there, it might have boosted everyone's confidence, instead it deflated everyone and we got what we got.

Very true, we just had to implode in a game with Florida, the team I dislike the most

Can't go with you on Pope being selfish trying to score there.....that's pretty ridiculous IMO. He should have secured the ball better, but he's there to try to score a TD and him being selfish had nothing to do with him scoring or not.
Don’t completely disagree w/ that.... but from the stands I could tell he was starting to get gased by about the 25 yard line... he should have recognized that in himself & graciously stepped out of bounds

Eh the kid has only had 3 career receptions in 13 career games. He may be more of a blocking TE than catching, which is fine. I don't think he should be disciplined in any way, maybe a bit more securing the ball practice but other than that I can't fault the kid for making at the time looked to be an amazing play.

Again, he tried, unlike most of the team on Saturday.

But then you'd have fans on here bitching that he didn't try and score, he was damned if he did, damned if he didn't.

Banks did the same thing last week on first down and where's the criticism?

They should have run the play with someone more suited to run the ball. SOS was outstanding at slipping a RB in that position, quick snap before the defense realizes it and hits the guy for the TD.... but then, Helton sure as hell isnt a SOS is he?

I prefer smarter players who know their limitations to someone trying to be a hero... any fan in their right man could see their was no way he was gonna beat their D to the endzone... but you’re right our fan base is so bipolar there’s no way to please them all... so I wouldn’t try... just play smart!

Agreed. Calling him selfish for trying to make a play is ridiculous. Pig was trying to stretch out and score a few years ago. It's called giving your all, not selfish.

This I can agree with, should he have stepped out? Maybe, but I won't fault the kid for trying to get his team in the endzone and some confidence cause they for sure needed it.

I've seen some dumb bs posted since Saturday night, but this one wins the prize. You're really going to call a player selfish because he was trying to make a play to help the team get back in the game. SMDH!!!

Although the team as a whole came out flat and laid a huge turd, there is one player that hurt us not once, but twice due to his selfish behavior. And that is Tight End Austin Pope. First, we converted on a fourth and one as Guarantano threw a nice bullet of a pass to Pope. But instead of allowing himself to be tackled at the one or two yard line for a chance to score, he extends his arm to try to bring it on himself to get the touchdown where he had the ball punched out and the ball turned back over to Florida. And the coaching staff has emphasized on not doing that after Banks done that last week at UTEP. But it didn't matter to him as he wanted to be the one to score and get the glory. Then a couple of plays later, we make a beautiful run play that was nullified because one of our guys couldn't keep his composure as he knocked a Florida Gator on his ass. Who was that guy? Pope again.

I hope that Coach Pruitt lit into his ass because his selfishness cost us two huge plays that could have made a difference. It is sad that Butch brought in a few players that don't want to think about the team as a whole, but only themselves. I hope that Pruitt made him do laps or sprints as punishment for hurting his tean due to his cockiness and selfishness.

I agree. Get rid of those selfish players. Also, get rid of those players with no talent. Now we're down to the cheerleaders and the guy who carries the Gatorade.

How many times do we have to grab a red hot horseshoe before we figure we're going to get burned? It's stupid to extend the ball when you're going down and there's defensive guys around you. Live to fight another day from the 1 or 2 than to fumble the damn ball away. They learn that crap in high school when they've got 10 times more talent than the guy defending them.

If you don’t have possession of the ball at the end of the play it’s a bad play. Selfish, stupid whatever you want to call it, it’s bad.

Not at all!! If I can sit in the stands & see his speed slowing down & looking like it taking every ounce of energy he has just to keep himself upright, he should have noticed that about his own strength level at that time & lived to play another down... step out of bounds don’t think you have to do it on your own... football is a team sport... you got the needed first down, now give someone who isn’t gased an opportunity to take it to the house!
