Gillespie out at UK (merged)

Ok, so Hat, I am curious. I agree with you that Gillespie is a good coach and what not, but what is your opinion on this situation and how UK got rid of Billy, as well as where you think he will end up.

Kentucky wants someone who wants to be a celebrity. Billy Clyde wants to be a basketball coach. I think UK made a mistake letting it linger for so long.If they made up their mind last week, as was indicated in the press conference, they should have announced it immediately. My guess is that BCG takes next year off then resurfaces in the Big Twelve or the Big Ten.

That sounds very reasonable to me. Now I do not know how you stand on Tubby Smith and his tenure at Kentucky, but to me, I thought that he was treated like trash and Kentucky fans are garbage, crybaby, sissies, that nothing will please them. Their complaint was that Tubby could only get to the Sweet 16 every year, and then Billy G comes in wins 20+ games in back to back years, and is let go. I do not understand their reasoning.

I think Tubby Smith is a tremendous coach.

Interesting poll results from the Herald-Leader so far. Maybe Ford will get a chance.

The fact Travis Ford is outpolling Thad Matta and Rick Barnes by those margins shows that the UK fans have completely taken leave of their senses.

Hmmm? I agree with Bruce that something is amiss in the NCAA coaching ranks. Looks at what has happened at Duke when Coach K started and how about the Gators not making the NCAA tourney the last 2 seasons? Is this firing because they expect the Wildcats to be in the NCAA tourney 8 out of 10 seasons or what. I know that the Wildcats have almost been a contender every season. When one mentions NCAA basketball in the south the first team that comes to mind is Kentucky then Carolina (Heels) and Duke.
Gillespie needed to have another year or 2.

Might want to check that stat again.

I didn't see the context of the poll. Was the question "Who will?" or "Who should?" Travis Ford as an answer makes much more sense to the first than the second.

Not sure what you are asking, but your standard is way low by UK standards. Ignoring the probation years as they were ineligible, the Cats have been in the NCAA tourney every year since 1979 and have been a 1 or 2 seed 15 times in that span.

The Courier Journal says Thad Matta is a candidate. When Big Blue Nation regains that tiny sliver of sanity it possesses, that would be a good direction to go in.

He can obviously bring in the talent, but is he a good coach?

It absolutely is, if the guy is actually available.

Do you think they could snag Matta?

Would be great for them given the way it's looking today.

I don't want them to get Thad. If we thought CBG could recruit - then imagine what Matta could do at UK if he can get some of those guys to Ohio State.

I can't think of any reason Matta wouldn't at least consider the jump. It's been reported that Indiana is his dream job. Well, that one isn't coming open any time in the next 15 years, so he might as well look somewhere else. I certainly think the UK job is superior to Ohio State.

Did IU not consider Matta when they hired Crean, or did they just prefer Crean?
I think they went with Crean because Matta had been at OSU such a short time that they felt snagging a guy from a conference rival in that situation would have been distasteful. Also, Crean's personality is better suited to handle the complete rebuilding job IU is forced to undertake.

So is going to be UK's Crean in about two years?

As a Tennessee fan, Matta is one of the names I think are actually possible that I would least like to see on the UK sidelines.

They could do much, much worse, and I hope they do.
