What is it with people going straight to the coaches for everything that goes wrong?

Do you honestly think that their coach doesn't teach them to knock the ball down on those types of plays? Middle school players are taught this.

Even if the coach doesn't teach that the players should know better

Funny you should say that. Richt was quoted as saying the coaches didn't tell the players to try and knock the ball down. They didn't think auburn would throw it deep....

There really is no excuse for the players not having the awareness to know that that's what they needed to do in that situation. Just bad.
