Lol, I thought the same thing and was waiting for someone else to say something.

I haven't been there since 98, but squat toilets were pretty common. Some more elaborate that others, the ones in public restrooms were really basic. They also have toilets with like 10 buttons on them that perform all kinds of poo-related functions:D

Yep. Korea was similar to this last time I was there 17 years ago.

So, work is sending me across the Pacific in a couple of months. Anybody ever been there? What can I expect? What should I take with me? Sightseeing ideas?

Ithe whole country is. Built for small people.. be prepared to lower your head a lot if you taller than 5'10"

Modes of travel... traveling to a meeting from Yokohama to Oita, went by plane, train hydrofoil boat, and rental car.

That's nuts. I've been around Japan AND Seoul several times and have never encountered these toilets, thank god.

Got to get out of those touristy places. Hell, we used to see cats and dogs hanging in the butcher shop windows in Korea like sides of beef. That all went to the back streets right before the Olympics came in. The Korean gubmint didn't want visitors leaving with that visual.

If you can find someone to guide you find some j-rock concert/gig to go to. Japan has some unique bands, as well as some very talented musicians.

Sometimes the very talented musicians are actually in the unique bands.

If you don't know how to read a 24 hour clock. Then learn. As America calls it military time. When you are at a train station. It will have from 00 to 23 across. Then the minute on down so you will have to follow that guideline on when your train arrives and departs. Some restaurants I had to take shoes off and some I didn't. So expect that. Try the sushi restaurants. Some went by on little boats in front of you. So pay attention to the color and that will be the price. As mentioned earlier. Their udon bowls were really good.

I'm pretty sure most people didn't get that. I did ror!

The Engrish over there is one of the best parts of a visit. Once saw a jacket with a wall of text on the back that was hilarious, but basically being the owner of such a jacket "suggest that maybe you are one to watch".

Find a CoCo Ichibanya Curry House and cherish every bite. I haven't lived there in 9 years and still crave that restaurant.
