Gone but not forgotten: Knoxville area restaurants and retailers we miss.

I grew up on the strip. My parents had a shop on Cumberland Ave, for 5 years I went to a private school behind Burger King in the early 70’s. Remember when the Oldsmobile dealership was located where the McDonald’s is. Remember people sitting around waiting for streakers. I don’t think any of it is better now, all I have now are just the memories.

I went to that school too. Thaxton School. Our cub scout leaders were the Bete Theya Po frat guys.

I remember Thackston School. It was at 2023 Lake Avenue. I did a web search to try to find pictures of it, but I couldn't find any. There is this one article archived by the News-Sentinel. They mention the arson fire that claimed the original building in 2009. The school relocated to the old Convention Center in the basement of the now-former Holiday Inn. Unsurprisingly, if you've ever been in that basement, the enrollment dropped quickly until the school closed in May, 2010.

I'll keep looking, as there has to be more info on the Thackston School somewhere online! If I find anything, I'll update this post.

Thackston Branch burned. Thackston School kept going for a handful more years. It was located in a large two story house which was still standing until at least 2021.

At any rate, the original Lake Ave. school is the one we're talking about, the one that people on here remember. Most people called it School, not Branch.

I started elementary school at Sequoyah Hills. Loved it there. But my parents opened a business and my dad was also a professor at UT. So midway through second grade my parents sent me to Thackston because they needed a place that had an after school program so I wasn’t home alone, wouldn’t get picked up until 6 pm. So I was there through 6th grade. I didn’t like it compared to Sequoyah Hills Elementary school but made a lot of good friend there.

Who remembers Laurel High School up near the strip, I think that it could have been on
17th, but its been so long ago, I had some friends that went there and it was definitely
an "unconventional" school.

Has anyone heard about a new food hall opening up in the old Kern’s Bakery?

Anyone remember White Stores? Before they were turned into Red Food, then Bi-Lo, then Food City? I remember my mamaw always a kitchen drawer for those green stamps

I don’t remember White Stores being those other two between becoming Food City. I think that Food Lion became Red Food and Bi-Lo. The Bi-Lo spot at Peters and KP was later a Food City iirc. But I think that Food City might have just taken over the space.

I worked at White Stores for 2 years in college. White shirt and a bow tie. White Store sold to Food City.
The bow tie was a chick magnet
